Pre
I haven't gotten into the smart phone thing yet, but I have been using a Palm handheld for about 10 years now. It handles all my business scheduling. for that reason alone I would pick the palm, hoping everything would transfer. It is a very nice device.

I used a palm device in the pre-blackberry days and honestly hated the UI. The pre looks different enough to want to try again.

AT&T sucks, too. The only reason not to get an iphone is the network. Other than that, it's basically the perfect phone.
Both devices are offered by Bell who's network is decent.
The Pre should be available on Verizon early next year, but for now, it would mean going with Sprint. I've had my Pre for a few months and I'm pretty pleased with it. Battery life isn't that great, but I like the keyboard and the interface well enough. It's a completely new operating system (called WebOS). For old Palm OS users, there's an emulator you can get. Syncing your existing contacts can be a bit of a bitch since it stores all of its contacts and calendars in the cloud (Google, Facebook, online Palm Profile, and others).
It's real easy to "hack" if you want. You just type in the old Konami cheat code and you can install whatever you want. You can even ssh into it and directly work with the linux shell via WiFi. There's automated installers for homebrew apps and patches. precentral.net is a good website for info/apps.

Agreed. Unless you are in one of the major markets, the AT&T 3G network sucks. Supposedly they are improving their network nationwide and releasing a 4G network soon however. The iPhone itself is amazing.
Sometimes it sucks. Probably shouldn't say this, but compared to other phones I've had (particularly ones with real keyboards) it is really hard to text/email and drive with the iPhone.

Yeah, that's the one thing that's difficult with my storm. I cannot text and drive.

I'd probably end up jacking eight or nine times a day, up from my usual 5 or 6. I will suck a cock. You can't neglect the balls Putting someone's cock in your mouth isn't intimate?
The Pre doesn't seem to have been the slam dunk they really needed. I think that partnering with Sprint, possibly the worst cell phone carrier of them all, was a big mistake.
I tried a Pre, and absolutely hated the keyboard. The keys are like these little plastic chicklet things; it's not nearly as good as the keyboard on any Blackberry model (except the Storm, of course.) And it seemed to me that there was less space per letter than on the iPhone's onscreen keyboard.
