Mike:
Some of my best friends are chiropractors.
Most allopathic physicians believe that chiropractic really shines in the area where it's been studied the most in the standard medical literature: low back pain. Also, most allopathic physicians (regular western medicine practitioners) don't believe that manipulating the spine affects the major organs, either adversely or otherwise.
However, there's a larger issue here. In some parts of the world, if you go to a "doctor" you're likely to get a guy who just waves palm fronds over you and makes a lot of noise. These guys have a success rate (judged by the patient stating they feel better) that's almost as good as western medicine, and with a lot fewer adverse events from medications and surgical procedures. This stems from patients needing the "process of recognition" from their practitioner more than they really need any kind of treatment. The shaman and the western medical provider both provide this recognition of the patient as a human being with real problems and patients respond favorably to this. Now, there are lots of things that scientific medicine does way better than shamanistic medicine does: treating overwhelming infections, preventing disease (vaccines, sanitation, etc), fixing broken bones, etc., but for everything else, the shamans do quite well.
A lot of Western Trained physicians forget (or didn't pay attention in "medicine and society" class) that the simple process of recognition is therapeutic. Chiropractors are masters at this process, and they're very successful in making certain patients feel better which in the end is all that really matters.
