View Full Version : Why The Mets Are A Mess

Okay, great lineup, great defense, but who is going to pitch for them? Please, no lame comments about Chen, Traschel and the other mediocre starters. The "ace" Leiter gets hurt every year, and Estes is no prize. Runs? Yes. I see a lot of 10-7 games, but the Braves are still the team to beat.

i'm a big mets fan and i'm just waiting for the season to start. leiter, astacio, and estes can probably give some quality starts, but i think everyone just need to relax and wait until baseball starts, only then will we know.
and the braves aren't the team to beat, they are the team that gets beaten in the playoffs because they choke, every year.
thanks to WWFallon

the mets pitching does not look good when you check out the names but they were 5th in the NL in era. so they are not bad.. they mets lost a lot of close games because of their offense.. also they are looking into getting rick reed back from the twins..

i'm not only concerned about thier pitching cuase i think mo vaughn is too fat and will prove to be a bust. no way any of those pitchers they traded for turn out to be any better than rick reed most will be turned to relief pithchers
i'm back for the first time to spread my irrational opinions. stay vigilant in spite of al duke's systematic
assault of the ronfez show. one day poo will rise up and strike him down 4ever!!!

Trachsel had an amazing second half last year, its often overlooked due to his abysmal first half. If the pitching staff somehow manages to stay healthy and they get the runs they should, the post season will be a given.
As to the Braves, Gary Sheffield will not put them over the top.

You have to realize that the Mets are throwing 40 years of there history to the wind with the way that they have restocked. The Mets have always traditionally built around pitching...from Jackson, Seaver, Koosman, Ryan, Gooden, Cone and Hampton. This is probably the first year they did not go after a powerhouse pitcher but decided instead to get hitting. Not for nothing though, the pitchers they have are no slouches. These guys are capable of a minimum of 6 innings a game, are able to force hitters into ground outs, and have good protection from the bullpen. The pitching is not Yankee calibre, but then again the Yankees dont play in the NL where hitters dominate. The pitching is more than aduqate...Leiter, Estes, and Astacio I see having good years. And DO NOT underestimate Trachsel...yes the guy has not had a winning season since '96. But lets look at the teams that he played for. These were teams that did not give him enough run protection. Yet he is a good enough starter to picth in a big game. ('98 one game playoff against the Giants where Trachsel went 8 innings) The guy is not as bad, yes as bad, as everyone thinks. He gives at least 7 innings a game, and when his head is in the right place produces well.

The Braves aren't the team to beat...they're the team for the Mets to finally beat. We still have to prove we can beat them.
As long as the pitchers stay healthy and pitch relatively well, then they'll be fine. And don't forget about D'amico. I have a good feeling about him.
All the METS need to do is stay in things and worry more about chemistry than pitching. They can get a pitcher during the season once they see how the team plays together . It's a long season, and it's far too early to predict anything.

The Mets need a stud, an ace, a stopper. They don't have one. Sure, this staff could do well, it has possibilities, but then again, "if the Queen had balls she would be the King". Without a #1 starter, they will not suceed.

There ace is leiter(i know what you are going to say).. but as long as they have a balanced rotation then they really don't need a so called stud.. as long as they can do what they did last year along with their improved offense they should do very well....

Another Sheeplovr Masterpiece
Using my deduction skills, I have come to this conclusion as to why the Mets suck. They sucked last year, spent million to get new players, fired the coaches and got all new ones, and they still suck this year. Now, what has been constant this whole time. That's right, that little whiny bitch Bobby Valentine. When will they finally figure out that he is a horrible manager which leads to a horrible team.

Fire Bobby Valentine and GM Steve Phillips so we can have some homegrown talent like the Yankees (Soriano, well he was in Japan, Posada, Jeter, Pettitte, Rivera, Mendoza)
I know we have Aaron Heilmann and Jose Reyes coming up soon. Hopefully we don't trade these guys too!
This is a lost season. Baseball is over in two weeks and I can't wait!

2002 Mets: popped-up bunts, missed signs, bats flying into the stands, lazy-ass trots to first, dropped balls, missed cut-off men and base-running blunders that would get a fucking Little Leaguer benched.
Fuck Disneyland. I'm going to Betty Ford!

The mets suck, yes, its a fact, but I'd rather have them suck for a million years than be a Yankees fan. I hate those f'n guys, if I had a million bajillion dollars I could buy a pretty sweet team too.
I know its not friday and its a different show, but this is a BIG F-U to the yankees and all their miserable, spoiled sport, winner picker fans half of whom are women who only watch casue "OMG Derek Jeter is such a hottie", shut the fuck up you retards. Sexy, you need to look up baseball history, read Marvin Millers book "A whole new ball game", Read Joe Morgans book about player/owner relations and look at what are the problems today and you will see who are the true fault behind the strikes. We all fell for the media blaming the playrs back in 1994, but we missed the true villians. They usurped the power of Commissioner by overthrowing Fay Vincent, then began strong arming the players association. Unfourtunatly the only side which was reported was the players side in 1994, and all of it was reported negativley. I dont know if you ever worked in a labor union or do now, butyou have to understand these labor relations since 1876 to understand these problems...

Thank you Gwen, but you have to realize that most people jumped on the Yankee bandwagon when they started winning. There are many loyal fans like myself who remember how bad the team was from 1965-75, and then most of the 80's. I say death to the frontrunners! Everybody loves a winner, it's revolting.
As for payroll, the Mets have a payroll of 100 mil, the Yankees are around 130. Not much diffence. Sometimes you have to use your smarts, and the Yankees have done just that.
But: if they strike, I'm done.
It's "Slamball" for me!

It's "Slamball" for me!I agree with Heck. That's how it is. The Mets and the Yanks are similar in payroll and both should be good. The Yankees have stayed on top and the Mets... well we all know what happened there.

Tazz hit it on the head. I don't know why Mets fans and upper management won't accept the fact that Bobby Valentine is the problem. With the lineup the Mets have, they should be worrying about their playoff postioning, not whether or not their gonna break the losing streak record. Winning isn't just about signing talented players. You have to have a manager who can motivate them to play to their highest level *cough cough Joe Torre cough cough*. Obviously Valentine is unable to do that.

I don't buy Doogie's take on the whole players were the only one blamed back in '94 crap. And I don't agree either that it's the players that are getting the raw end of the deal.
I could go on about labor union talk and how bad it was for the players years ago and how good it is for them now, but what it comes down to is this. Competitive balance. Baseball doesn't have it, and that will kill the sport eventually.
I wonder if during the strike the players will come up on a possible drug policy. It only took them 6 months to reply to the question of drug testing. I'm sure they'll get right on it.
Thank god football is starting!
