Crypt raiders used baby's skull as ashtray
Four men in New Zealand opened a baby's coffin, stole its skull and used it as an ashtray.
Wellington District Court heard the men stole the remains from Karori Cemetery.
Its jawbone was used to make a necklace. They all pleaded guilty to charges of interfering with human remains and burglary.
Police prosecutor Sergeant Marc May said the four - Denis Charles McCarrison, 21, Lachlan Michael Holland, 18, Harlen James Wright, 19, and Allan Campbell Hazelton, 18 - spent time drinking together, the Stuff website reports.
On October 17, the four went to the cemetery where Holland, Wright and McCarrison broke into a crypt.
They used candlelight to see, and found the baby's coffin at the back. It had been put there in 1924.
They then broke into the coffin and removed its skull and jawbone. They threw the rest of the skeleton into the sea.
The baby's skull was used as an ashtray at Holland and Wright's Kingston flat until police recovered it.
Holland attached the baby's left jawbone to a leather tie and used it as a necklace. It hasn't been recovered. Holland claimed it had been stolen.
Judge Geoffrey Ellis adjourned sentencing until March 13.
