What do you like LEAST about your job?

I'm a production editor at a publishing company. I HATE talking to authors, typesetters, and printers on the phone. I LOVE e-mail. I stammer and hem and haw on the phone.

I also HATE having to do my "yearly" Objectives (which I do twice a year, go figure!). Basically, I have to write about why my books were late or why I was over/under budget. I still have to do it this year although we WON'T be getting bonuses. (Like dogs through hoops!).

One of the mail room guys used to corner me in my office but he got shit-canned. NOW I'm happy! (Does "Happy Dance"!)

If I hit the Lottery I would give my 2 weeks and retire, BUT! being this is not the case, here goes:
1. TimeSite - A database we need to fill out to log our work hours, what we've been doing and on what(or whom "giggle") I've been in the Corporate world for almost 14 years and I've seen this type of thing come and go. To me it adds up to nothing because employees in most cases do not put in a full 8 hours, so they are going to lie to fill the quota... Is a Manager going to go to each employee and say "Hey, you put 2 1/2 hours and it should have been only an hour" I don't believe so... If the data has no integrity, then you can not formulate a result with integrity...

2. I hate the negativity, so I'll end here

I just got to thinking while i was in the john...

Whenever we reorg, which is at least an annual event, the new guy in charge changes the names of the dept's... All the acronym's change...
Now people don't know who the hell they are or who the other guys are called... This leads to alot of work changing distribution lists, mailing lists, business cards, etc...
Why don't one of these guy/gal in charge be original and leave the names as they are and make a name for themselves in a more productive manner...

I would have to say answering the phones. Im not very intimidating or authoritative when it comes to taking calls, I fold like a crappy cardboard box. I hate getting yelled at by uppity taxpayers in multimillion dollar homes who dont think twice about reminding me that "they pay my salary". Its like I just wanna say "oh yeah? Well then give me a fuckin' raise, asshole!"

Oh and my groaty assistant who always picks at her self, other than that I basically get paid to do my homework and rock out on RF.net.

wow, i could just go on all day... but, the short list:

1 - the 2 hour commute each way

2 - my awful, anal manager who is just an awful bitch hell bent on making my life miserable (and i don't exaggerate)

3 - all of the higher ups are androids who can't comprehend the fact that some of the peons actually have personalities and don't fit into the "corporate" mold

4 - it is so damn boring. i was an applied math major and i took this job expecting to be doing math and there is none to be had.... i basically do mindless computer work all day

Being one of the higher ups, I don't have too many bosses to fuck with me. The job is only as bad as I make it.

Believe it or not, the thing I loathe most is having to hire new employees. I'm the Engineering Manager of an elevator company, located about 30 miles west of Manhattan. Whenever I post openings for workers, you wouldn't believe the shitty resumes that cross my desk. I pray for an ideal candidate to just show up so I don't have to go through the painful interview process.

BTW, I have an opening for an AutoCAD drafter.

I also work in the "glamorous" world of legal publishing. . . as what I describe as a sort of cross between an SGML programmer and layout artist.

I do shit work for shit pay and am BORED to tears lately.

The worst thing about being bored is getting lazy. . . and that means I make stupid mistakes in my quality checks, giving my bosses an excuse to yell at me. I'm not sure that they would because they are all pussycats and have worked their way up from the job I do now to their jobs, but I'm still cautious.

So I get hyper-critical of the quality of my work and go through some work-weeks with the mindset "if I don't do such-and-such I will get fired". . . causing myself undue stress.

Other than that, I don't much care for 2 out of our 3 IT guys, but that's because one's a dysfunctional drunk and the other is my ex-boyfriend.

EDIT: And we moved to NEWARK from PARK AVENUE, NYC in June 2001. Lovely, tropical. . .Newark. If I didn't daily fear for my life, it wouldn't be so bad, as it's kinda pretty if you ignore the burned-out shells of buildings, daily police/ambulance sirens, heroin addicts and prostitutes.

But I'm not bitter.
