Tomorrow 3/22 kicks off the start of the season as the Dodgers and D'Backs have a short series in Australia.

There were some big signings and moves during the offseason as well as the mega deal Kershaw signed to stay with LA.

Theres another week and a half or so for the rest of the league to start but after this winter (and cold weather to return to the NE nest week) I'm ready for baseball

I know it's not like the old days where the players had been working real jobs all winter and thus were out of shape to play baseball and needed spring training to get back into shape, but if I were the Dodgers or the Diamondbacks, I'd be pissed about my spring training being cut short by more than a week so I can play in front of a bunch of confused Aussies who have no idea what's going on. "Blimey! Where's the bloody wicket? Did someone just make a 6?"

I think the last full season Kemp had was 2011, Beckett has a thumb injury saw on ESPN LA's payroll is 239.4 million now but it's likely to go down by opening day due to DL and other transactions.

Kershaw got the win today to kick off the season

They unveiled a bunch of new gear this year.

That one is a new road "alternate". Similar to what they wore in the 1920's.

Being the 100th year at Wrigley, they'll be pulling out all kinds of throwbacks, including this gem from when I watched them as a kid:

People are animals. I run a 21k ft² mfg facility. Any unused flat surface quickly becomes a "shit collector". All it takes is one styrofoam coffee cup to get left on it, and everyone else starts adding to the "pile".

Someone has to be first. If others walked past the statue and it was clean, most won't tend to be the first one to pollute it. But once it starts...

It's inevitable. The only way to prevent it is to eliminate all such areas in the building, including in my own office. My boss was famous for coming in, setting his cup down while sketching stuff on my whiteboard, or reading papers, and leaving it there. Next thing I see is someone's half empty coke bottle. (Or worse, spit cup/bottle. This is Alabama, remember)

Now? Every available surface has been filled or eliminated. There's nowhere in here for anyone to set anything down. He'll do a pirouette, and head to the break area to set it down out there instead.

If they are concerned about people "desecrating" this statue, they should re-build the base with an angled or curved platform. Otherwise, being right by the entrance, it'll keep happening.

Ahhh

Baseballs weird fad with light blue uniforms

When I was a kid living in Illinois, and before Wrigley had lights, I saw almost every one of the Cubs home games on WGN. But because most other stadium had lights, not so many road games.

So when I saw the other teams, they were always in their road uni's.

So, if you had asked young ozzie back then, what the colors were of the other teams, I would have said:

Cardinals? Red, white and Light Blue:

http://www.mlbnewjerseys.com/images/bnewjers/St-Louis-Cardinals-eys600345345.jpg

Phils? Red, white and Light Blue:

http://www.krakov.net/si/images/1979/0528_large.jpg

Reds? Red, white and Light Blue:

https://www.bestsportsphotos.com/image.php?productid=23346

Expos? Red, white, dark blue, and Light Blue:

http://cdn.c.photoshelter.com/img-get/I0000CjKxAn5wP.o/s/750/750/010813-Raines-11.jpg

Royals, Blue Jays, Etc.

It didn't even dawn on me that this was some weird trend in baseball, substituting the old road grays with light / powder blue. I just thought this was part of their team color scheme, and it didn't even occur to me that there were an inordinate number of teams that were light blue.

Dodgers, Mets, Yanks... all wore gray on the road, and the Pirates didn't wear anything but black white and yellow, and the Astros were the astros no matter at home or road, so why would these other teams wear Light blue if it wasn't part of their team colors?

Just a weird, polyester, elastic waist band period for MLB.

One of the teams in our "hot stove" league went to that style, and I hated them too.

I moved to Cleveland in 1979, and already hated all things Pittsburgh. But in '79, with the Steelers fourth ring, and the "we are family" pirates crap, it was unbearable.

Another weird thing about playing hot stove ball in Ohio in the early 80's were the stirrups.

We were issued stirrups with our uniforms.

Just like old 80's basketball shorts, the uniform pants were cut short too. Just covered the knee.

The style was to wear your stirrups where the top arch barely showed.

Something like this would have been marginally acceptable:

http://www.morphizm.com/images/frankrob.jpg

But if you were issued something like these...

http://imagecache5.art.com/p/LRG/9/936/NHTX000Z/carl-yastrzemski--finish-swing.jpg

...then you got your mom (or tried yourself, like I did) to split them at the bottom and add a length of elastic so you could pull them up higher.

Some guys added so much elastic that it showed, and part of their pre-game ritual was to get a marker and color the elastic to match the rest of the stirrup.

The Hawk (Andre Dawson) always had great stirrups:

I don't know about that. I'd never seen or heard of "mock" stirrups until this century.

Maybe they were around back then, but I never saw them.

Most of us wore ours way up high like that, either by design, or modification.

They sold stirrups by length. We'd beg our sponsors to get 12" or 15" stirrups so the top would barely show, if at all.

And does anyone else remember "sanitaries"?

They were those thin, nylon "socks" that we'd wear over our socks, but under the stirrups.

Wore them with our football uniforms too.

My kids have no idea what I'm talking about, and I haven't seen them in sporting goods stores since I was a kid.

I'm curious when they went out of style... or if they did?

http://www.customsportsteamuniforms.com/media/wysiwyg/Nylon_Sanitries2.JPG

If you were on a team with a three color scheme, a lot of times you'd wear colored ones under your stirrups. Or just plain white ones. But no one just wore plain socks under their stirrups.

Tony Gwynn, back in the 80's:

I just always wondered about the origin of the "sanitary" sock. And why we were told to wear them, even if it was white sanitaries over white socks.

It didn't touch your skin, so it wasn't for your protection.

My only guess is that the nylon was easier to clean, and made the uniform look better than the guys wearing their dingy cotton socks with their uniforms?

Omg, what a freakin cannon.

My fraternity brother at Auburn used to tell me that the summer before Bo's senior year, the coaching staff mentioned to him that they were thinking of having him return kickoffs that fall. So Bo got Chris Knapp (the kicker) to meet him out at the intramural fields so he could practice catching end over end kicks off a tee.

He ran the first few back to the kicker, but it was hot as piss, so this got old quick. After that, he just started throwing the ball back to him, and was routinely overthrowing him, making the kicker have to chase it down.

The kicker was lining up at the 40, and Bo was catching them at the opposite goal line, or in the endzone. The throws were traveling about 70+ yards back in the air, before he started taking a little off of them.

Took long enough

well they finally got a decent offer for him as he WAS an 18th pick. sure that means little of late, but he can hit it far when on and had done it in the bigs not too long ago

being where the Mets were and are, there was no need to rush/force it

Milwaukee was really interested in Ike until the Mets insisted on Thornburg. Then the Brewers spent a lot of time laughing.

He's a monster, and he also seems like a genuinely likable kid in his interviews.

Even though it was at the expense of the Yankees (as so many good jokes are), it still gave me a chuckle so I thought it deserved to be shared...

We aren't all bandwagon hoppers

I will say that going to a Pirates game is a much different experience than Yankee Stadium. There aren't a bunch of women just going there to be there like many do in NYC, You're right about the crowd and the gals here are baseball fans.

I'm going to try and go up there sometime this year: preferably in September when the Sox play the Buccos or in May when the Nats go there.

Pitt is more than I expected. Living in NYCs backyard for most of my life kind of spoiled me with so much to do.

The new job is in Coraopolis so when I came in to interview it was only overnight stays but I was pleasantly surprised by downtown Pitt

As far as the Nats I'm guessing those are relatively newer fans since the move there was in 05
Do they have a lot of people wearing Expos gear at Nats Park?

I've heard Pitt is a pretty cool place: especially from my buddies who grew up there. They gave some tips on places to check out. Of course, there is always this guide. (http://theinterrobang.com/2012/03/pittsburgh-the-right-way/)

Every once in a while you'll see some Expos hats and jerseys in the crowd. But the problem down here is that this area is full of transplants: not to mention the long-standing O's fans. So there are a shit-ton of Sox fans (like myself), Yankees fans, Philly fans, etc. who came here to work for the gov't and who pack Nats Park when their teams come to town. Still, the team has attracted a large following over the past few years given their success. And it's a great place to watch a game: better sight lines even than Camden Yards.

But I can't consider myself a Nats fan because I'll always be a Sox fan first and foremost. I can qualify it by saying "they're my NL team" but that wouldn't work either because Yankee and Mets fans hate each other like Cubs-White Sox and Dodgers-Halos. I go to a bunch of games (I was supposed to go last night but got home late from work) and watch them all on TV but I can never buy Nats gear without feeling hypocritical.

I'm the same way. I'm not going to adopt Pitt as my team. Been a Yankee fan all my life going back to the Mattingly days. I have a couple of Yankee items in my office but not overwhelming amounts. I don't wanna feel like I am this NYC showoff taking over.

I like going to live games, and now getting to see players that I wouldn't get to see in the Bronx is a big plus.

First thing I bought for my Miami office was a Patriots rug, so everyone walked by and saw it.

You need a little fan pride sometimes. Lead to some fun bets and them ragging on me when the Patriots lost in Miami last year.
