It's a weird question because once they started making CDs do none of those albums count? Because it isn't the same to say the best 60+ minute album.

Is the 15 minute song block integral to the consideration? Because then you have to look at actual album sides and say well A B C and D are great on this one, C is a clunker on that one. An album you might think of as great might get knocked because C is filler, even though A B and D are 15 #1 hits.

Q: It's a weird question because once they started making CDs do none of those albums count? Because it isn't the same to say the best 60+ minute album.

A: NO, they don't count. CDs aren't retro yet - LPs are. This is the retro discussion. There IS no such thing as a double album on CD, unless it was already a double album on LP. CDs have too many different lengths, bonus tracks, and all that SHITE.

Q: Is the 15 minute song block integral to the consideration? Because then you have to look at actual album sides and say well A B C and D are great on this one, C is a clunker on that one. A: Everything on the album in integral to the consideration. That's true of any album, whether it's single or double, Stones or Mummers.

Any TUSK fans out there? If I can just turn one person onto this album I'll be happy. All 1:12:24 of the album is on youtube:

Live records cant possibly count, they're essentially greatest hits.

to this day I still dont understand how bands back in the 60s could put out double and triple LPs and albums every 7 months and they were all fantastic, and now a days all bands songs start to become shit after their first album cause they cant come up with enough new shit.

The record industry model could be different. A record company says 'dont release your second album too quickly' and the longer layoff fucks up the songwriting process.

but thats my point. the bands now have much more time to record the follow up albums, but they are almost never as good. These guys back in the day were recording albums every 6 months and they were fantastic

That was part of the reason Deep Purple broke up in the first place 40 years ago: the record company wanted to keep them touring non-stop AND cranking out albums and finally it got to be too much for a couple of members of the group.

But, back then the mentality was "make as much as you can as quick as you can".

Yeah what I mean is it's maybe a better idea to strike while the iron's hot and the record company slowing down the album cycle actually makes it harder to make records at the same level.

Like instead of 'oh you have 3 good albums in you' it's 'oh you have 2 years to make music at your peak.'

I always had an idea bands write songs like collecting them and when they got to 12 they said 'lets make an album' and then you find out most bands dont think about writing music until they actually schedule time to sit down and hammer it out, then they go in to record it.

im sure that had alot to do with all of them who broke up. Im sure Lennon and McCartney coulda made it last a lot longer if they werent spending 90% of their time together. You can only take that shit so long. And through all that, they made like 90000 albums in 8 years

i think its also the times. People cant focus on shit like that anymore. Too much other shit is going on.

The biggest reason i think is, back then these guys would start by playing backup for other people whenever they could. So they learned to adjust and be better at playing music. And so they could write entire albums in a few weeks.
Now a days it takes people forever to get shit done, so these bands spend years writing shit for that first album. Once in comes out, they have blown through most of their work, and now cant possibly get near that level again because they dont have years to do it again.

triple album!!

ALL THINGS MUST PASS was IMO the best solo album by an ex-Beatle...ever. He went on tour though around '74 and Ravi Shankar got booed and he changed some lyrics goofing around and got booed...and he just soured on the whole thing. Rolled up the carpet and spent the '80's snorting coke...then came back with that one pop album...and that was all he wrote. Of course, his last years were hell - having the guy come into his house trying to stab him...getting lung cancer after going back to smoking...I guess it's a good thing that all things must pass.

I also blame the record companies. A band puts out an album and they make them tour their asses off and they have to write on the road while playing shows all over the country. By the time they finally have the time to get it done two years have passed.

And again, London Calling is the best double LP ever. EVER.
