Sorry, I need to get this out of my system...Today I sat in the stands at Daytona watching the most goddamned boringest race ever held at the megaspeedway. Tony Stewart basically led the last 30 laps of the Shootout 70 lap race with not one pass for the lead in the final 30 laps. Last year? A lead change every lap. Oh, and the increased security measures at the track was them making you reduce your cooler size so you can only fit 3 canned beverages in the track. There was no extra searches. Oh and the food prices stayed the same, and the beer was $5 a CAN! unlike their promise of "We will drop prices due to the fact that you will be required to bring smaller coolers in", and finally the FORDS are getting shafted. SPY REPORT...Look for FORD to possibly boycott NASCAR races starting with this Sunday's Daytona 500 if some changes are not made before the running of the Great American Race. Any comments LOL?

I saw on RPM2night that they were looking at making some changes to the Fords this week. Some of the Chevy drivers did not think they needed any changes to the Fords. We will see.

So what this group is telling me is that a bunch of guys driving around in circles 200 times is not a form of athletic competition?
I would beg to differ.
Wait.. no I wouldn't..NASCAR is the biggest waste of time and the fact that ANY television station puts them on... ESPICIALLY ESPN... makes me SICK... NASCAR stinks.

It looks like Ford got a concession on the rear spoiler (.25 inch), much to the chagrin of the Chevy and (even more so) the Dodge folks.
BTW- to those who think NASCAR is not a sport, is bowling an athletic event or just grown-up marbles? And what are we to make of this alleged Winter Olympic 'sport' called "curling"???

While I'm not the biggest fan of NASCAR by any means, I have to give them some credit. It takes a fair amount of strength to control a car doing 200 mph, and it involves strategy and hand to eye coordination. Strength + strategy + hand/eye coordination + risk of death = sport. A driver has to know when or when not to take a pit stop, or pass. Has to know aerodynamics to understand "drafting", or the "wash" from another car. Can suffer from severe dehydration while driving. Has to know exactly what his car can or cannot do, and puts his life in danger every race or qualifying trial. A driver could crash and die even on a track by himself. One quick wrong overturn of the wheel could send his car flipping through the air, or right into the wall to an almost certain death. If it was so easy, or if it was like doing 90 up the parkway in and out of traffic, then go do it. Go be a millionaire. I just suggest you go get that life insurance policy first.

You folks who think NASCAR isn't a sport should get on the horn to ESPN quickly and let them know they've been bamboozled.
You may not LIKE IT but you will LEARN TO LOVE IT!!! WWWWOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

Well if you havent noticed ESPN is a whore for anything that they can fill their broadcast day with. So it dont take much to fool ESPN. I am eagerly await the pogo stick jumping olympics myself.
I look forward to those intense curling matches that are on at 3 am. They really keep me on the edge of my seat

what do you consider a sport? Nascar does take some sort of control, strategy and physical energy (i'll admit that)...but that by no means makes it a sport. It's driving fast...nothing more..nothing less. And I feel no pity or shame to say I like when one of the drivers slams into a wall at 100mph and gets hurt or dies...they derserve it and ask for it by "competeting" and driving so fast. Does anyone feel bad for an old punch drunk boxer? No cause they asked for it. You involve yourself in games that have these results...and willingly do so...tough luck and shit on you.

Auto racing is a sport just as much as football, hockey, baseball, and basketball.

I can't stand NASCAR. I view NASCAR as about as much of a sport as professional wrestling. I think you can understand my meaning.

Well just going by the title of this post alone I have to relate a story that happened to me a few years back. Actually was three years ago (that is 1999 to the mathamatically deficient), and I went down to Daytona with some friends. I told them before we even got down there a few months before that I did not want to go to the races. I was only there for the vacation (was my last year in college) and the women (a whole 'nother story to itself), and the beach. Well when I got down there and renewed my vow, everyone looked at me like a communist during the McCarthy Era. I might as well have of spit on ole glory for announcing that. But hey in spite of all the looks I had a great time without having to watch some cars go around in a circle for a while...I even made some friends while down there too...Memories to cherish for a lifetime. NASCAR is crap and is as commercial as anything, $140 a ticket per race, FU!!! My bro and sis are into the whole thing, but I am into real sports...not this race car crap... bring on the bat and glove anyday...

OK, first, ESPN no longer airs NASCAR races..its just FOX and NBC and their cable affiliates. Second, NASCAR race cars no longer reach speeds of 200 MPH. NASCAR feels that if they went that fast, they may fly off the ground in a spin and enter the grandstands...yet the cars still fly going at 185, what they do now at Daytona. Third, not ALL NASCAR is crap, just the WINSTON CUP SERIES. I saw a very entertaining Dash race at Daytona saturday, and paid $8 for the top row seat. Also, the truck race next week should be good. But Winston Cup is a bunch of crap. I will clarify that. If anyone is down in daytona area, go see one of the support races thats actually affordable, less crowd, and fun to watch.

Just to clarify...my point about ESPN covering NASCAR didn't have to do with broadcasting races but rather the fact that they offer extensive coverage of NASCAR racing. Obviously people's opinions differ, but my thought is that when something has a competitive, physical component to it, and it's covered by ESPN, SI etc etc and the sports section of the paper, it's probably a sport.
Whether Winston Cup is too commercalized is another good debate but it smells quite a bit like talk about bands becoming too commercial, 'vanilla' and the like. 'Mainstreaming' seems like the natural evolution of success and, not suprisingly, some people who didn't like it before catch on to it while others who did drop off.

If you honestly believe Nascar or any form of car racing is a sport, go to the Jersey turnpike, the LIE, or any busy road. There are millions of competitors.
Just cause millions of
red-neck, sister f'in huckleberries pay to watch and enjoy driving...doesn't make it a sport.
