It's a dark fantasy called Song of Simon. A teenaged Westchester boy is drowned by bullies. Before his death he is sucked through a portal into a medieval-like fantasy world. This world is caught in a holy war, as the high preistess has imprisoned the patron god in order to punish the people for their decadence. A rebellion, led by a potential messiah has sprouted up. The boy falls in with the rebels, and is convinced by the messiah to assassinate the High Preistess. the novel follows the boy on his quest, alongside the civil war that rages around him.
