I know I'm probably late to the game, and I'll be lucky to get my hands on one but does anyone out there have any comments on the new Wii U ?

Can you play previously purchase wii games ? Does it come with everything needed for 2 player games ? Expandability ?

It only comes with one controller, you need to buy the other setups.

It's backward compatible with the Wii games. And you'll be able to download and play all other Nintendo system games.

I thought I read that you could use wii remotes from the old systems on it.

i got 2 of them......1 for me and one for my kid. i haven't lost interest in it yet but probably will.....my kid on the other hand is obsessed with it.

I thought I read that you could use wii remotes from the old systems on it. yes you can. you have to click on the wii menu channel and then pair the wiimote.

the Battery Life from the controller is painfully short. You have to charge after almost every time you play. Also it doesn't charge through the console itself, you need to go directly through an outlet.

I'm not so concerned about how to transfer things and hook it up, my son can figure that out. I was more concerned that there was at least a way to play old wii games.

Thanks for the info. My wife managed to find a place to order it. They say delivery will be later this week.

She bought the deluxe package with the 32gb drive. Should we get an SD card to expand the memory more ?

I bought one yesterday. There is an initial download that you have to use to get access to the system's internet features. The download took 6-friggin- hours to download.

My old Wiimotes paired with the TV with little effort. New Super Mario Bros U is a blast. Nintendoland is interesting, but the mini-games are rubbish (admittedly I haven't played them all yet).

I haven't tried the Wii game thing yet, but I have a Japanese Wii from I lived overseas. The games are not compatible between regions... They probably won't work.

I just ordered one. So my old Wiimotes should just work with it? I have a classic controller that plugs into my wiimote as well, will that work too?

I would guess it depends on the game. But all new games will probably either use the tablet or the wiimote.

so it won't work with old wii game discs ? you had to have bought the games through the wii store ?

I miss the old days of nes cartridges and simple left, right,up,down, fire controllers

I may have gotten crotchety, but Nintendo has absolutely no interest to me. I only got the game cube because Resident evil 4 was exclusive to it. I saw some screenshot of a new 2d Super Mario game and had a visceral reaction. Fuck your cutesy shit you weird japanese perverts.

I picked one up today.. I'm not typically a console guy and my Xbox 360 only lasted me a month before I got bored with it. My first Nintendo product since the N64.. The Gamecube was garbage and still have nightmares on just how awful Mario Sunshine was and the Wii was just a slightly improved Gamecube w/ different controls and in this day and age it was stupidly under powered. I was dismissive of the Wii-U at first but after doing a lot of reading and watching reviews I decided to bite on it.. I'm all up for original games based on good old fun and not how many textures and AI a developer can cram on the screen.

I'm downloading the day one patch now but first reactions are good.. Setup was simple. The controller is a lot more natural feeling then thought it would be. It instantly programmed itself to control my Samsung 42inch LED TV which is a nice little bonus. The first accessory anyone should buy is a real stylus.. The pointy plastic crap that comes with it is terrible. I have a few rubber tipped ones I used w/ my Nexus 7 and they work 10x better.

So I got the 32GB bundle that comes w/ Nintendo Land and grabbed New Super Mario Bros and Black Ops ][

Mine shipped and I heard the initial download takes forever. I'm definitely picking up Zombie U (I have heard it is insanely hard, like Dark Souls hard), and the main reason I wanted the system is that Bayonetta 2 will be Wii U exclusive.

Also I selfishly like having all 3 latest systems. I hate missing out on exclusive games.

Any other necessary accessories? I have rubber tipped styluses already from my kindle fire.

My initial update took 40 minutes to download. Not even close to the reported 6hrs I've read about. Been playing most of the day. I gotta say the system is damn nice and the gamepad is awesome. The touch screen isnt the best with finger use. Stylus definitely needed to assure no missed touches especially when typing. The web browser isnt bad either. Typed the whole thing out on the Wii U gamepad.

Gonna get some sorta screen protector. This is definitely no tablet quality touchscreen (didnt expect it to be) and can see it getting worn easy

I could see that.. Single player is a nice challenge though.. I'm nearing the end of the main game then going to go back and find the 3 coins on each level. My one complaint about the game is the levels with the secret exits. The only way to know they even exist is by randomly finding out about them on the internet. Also, they are so insanely hidden that no one would ever find them unless there was videos showing you. Which is exactly what I had to do. Like, one I had to jump up and on top of the ceiling of a level that wasn't even visible until you made it up there. Then once up there you had to jump on top of the ceiling of the ceiling (yo dawg). I'm all about exploration and can take subtle hints if provided in game to go find stuff. Blatantly making things impossible to find unless shown doesn't make any sense.

ZombiU is theeeee beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeessst game I've played in a long time. Very different style of gameplay and interaction but it's original, unique and I legit jump a little in fear playing this.. It's also hard as shit but in a good way.

My system came yesterday and the initial download wasn't that bad.

Pros:
The gamepad is bigger than I thought it would be, but comfortable.

The social aspect is pretty cool. I like the "wheel" of games with people converging around them and commenting.

Being able to switch the TV back to TV and continue the game you're playing on the gamepad is cool (did this w/ Super Mario Bros last night)

Cons:
Load times are wayyy too long. Unacceptably long. Hope they can patch this issue somehow because it's really annoying.

So far, the graphics seem to be on par with Wii. I was expecting more.

Store is kind of hard to navigate, are there demos? I see people talking about them, yet can't find them

angrymissy
12-11-2012, 06:57 AM
Also, you can't play 1 person on a gamepad and 1 person on a wiimote on Mario U? Has to be 1 person on a gamepad, or 2 people on wiimotes? Or am I missing something here

And if you have 2 profiles on one Wii U, how do you make it so those profiles can play against each other on games? We bought the sonic racing game. When we play 2 player, it shows up as P1: Angrymissy, P2: Angrymissy(2). I want it to assign my profile to P1 and my Husbands to P2.

Some of the graphics are also cut off on the main screen for me on my TV. My TV isn't set to a zoom mode or anything and I read other people have the same issue. It's just slight enough to be annoying yet not fuck with what I'm doing. It's not an issue on the games, only on the main screens. Anyone have a fix?

12-11-2012, 09:04 AM
Hiya Missy.. Fifa 13 is the only game with a demo right now.

As far as the screen not fitting. No blanket fix. I think it's the overscan of various TV sets doing that to people. Some apps have there own screen size settings. Miiverse has one.. I had to adjust it because the side menus weren't fitting right and some of the first letters were nipping at going off the edge of the screen.

Miiverse / User Menu / Settings / Miiverse Settings / Scroll to the bottom "screen size"

The web browser also has a screen size option to adjust in its settings.

Graphics wise I think it looks fantastic and blows Wii away. New Super Mario Bros isn't using the full potential of the system but it's still leaps and bounds better than Wii by a lot. Assassins Creed 3 looks incredible.

One huge con for me was the half assed implementation of Wiimote support. It works on the main screen and you can launch the Miiverse, or click a thread that pops up an choose to read the post, but once away from the main screen it stops working as a navigation tool and you have to reach for the gamepad. I found it odd that I can launch Miiverse with the Wiimote but can't navigate Miiverse with it. Very half assed.

Lastly (as far as things I can comment on) the store is abysmal.. It's just a vapid retail wasteland. 1/2 of it can't even be bought and downloaded. Hopefully Nintendo addresses the load times and some of the ways you navigate around..

and after messing around with it some more last night, the system is really starting to grow on me.

The social integration is definitely a big plus. We bought the Sonic racing game to play 2P and decided it sucked. But then I saw a bunch of Miis standing around it in the miiverse talking about how awesome and difficult it was, so I decided to play it again in 1P mode, and it was really fun.

Yeah the system isn't bad at all. It does grow on you. The slowness isn't that bad.. If I remember right when I had my Xbox switching in and out of apps like Netflix, Last.FM was slowish too. Wii-U is a bit more slow than that but it's not a deal breaker.. Just annoying. I honestly haven't thoroughly enjoyed a console since... Dreamcast I guess.

I read Sonic Racing is almost a perfect clone of Mario Kart is that true? I love me some Mario Kart but didn't get Sonic Racing as I had no familiarity with the title. What would you say the replay value is? I try to heavily avoid games that I know once I beat them it will never be played again.

The slowness needs to be fixed. It might just be b/c I'm on my 360 and PS3 all the time, but its probably about 5x slower to get to a settings screen on the Wii. I'm sure they'll do something to patch it eventually, but it drives me nuts

Sonic racing is similar to Mario Kart, but the cars transform into boats and flying cars too. It's pretty neat. I'd say replay value is up there if you're the type to try to get all the stars, #1 in races, #1 in battles, online races, etc. Plus it was $40 rather than $60.

Definitely agree the slowness needs to be delt with. So I tried the Sonic racing demo and really enjoy it a lot and definitely going to buy it..

I've decided to go all disc also. The digital downloads of retail games is tempting but if the game sucks or I get bored with it I'm stuck with it.. On disc I at least have the option to throw it at a gamestop employee and get a few bucks back. I did it with Black Ops 2.. Bought it for $60, hated it and sold it back to Gamestop for $40..

I sold this thing.. Nintendo failed to keep the initial excitement of the product they had at launch. Title after title after title announced NOT coming to the Wii-U.. The stupid delay of Rayman... Just... Fizzled.. Shame.. Had a lot of promise but it seems Nintendo rolled out the hardware with no definitive must have software lined up other than Mario and a few other launch titles.
