The remains of a roller coaster that was knocked off a New Jersey amusement pier by Superstorm Sandy and partially submerged in the Atlantic Ocean may be left there as a tourist attraction. (http://www.nypost.com/p/news/local/roller_coaster_submerged_by_sandy_JAjKV8BTyJk3mtGE f19uIP)
This is a very decisive subject for people of the area I have noticed. It's either loathe it or love it. Personally, I think it might be a good idea. Might. I realize the enviornmental and saftey concerns will probably never have this happen... BUT... say for argument's sake they were not a factor.
Would it be a good idea? A modern ruin that people could see as a reminder of nature's fury? Or is it too painful and a stark reminder of loss?

I think I'd go, fall to my knees in the sand and scream "You Maniac Guidos! You blew it up! Ah, damn you! God damn you all to hell!"
But probably only once...

And the USS Arizona. I'd bet that some of the top money-making tourist attractions in the world are ruins.
I think that it could be a temporary attraction. Those beaches won't be ready by next summer, so might as well have that as something people would come to see and bring money into the community. I'd take the trip to see that.
I'll go out on a limb here but if this is brought up on the show, Pepper will agree with Ron's opinion, which will be the opposite of whatever Fez says.

In the docu film Lords of Dogtown it shows some park that is dilapidated and in the water.

i think it will work for a little while as a tourist attraction. the problem will be once regulars complain that it looks like shit from the beach or they cant swim in all the floating around pieces of wood and metal. also, Casino Pier was a really nice surf spot. Now you arent gonna be able to surf anywhere cause all the waves are gonna break right through this monstrosity.
im sure after a year or so they will probably have to remove it

massive metal ships get beat down and disappear when beached, so this thing won't last long at all. one or two normal storms and a summer and this thing will be way more dangerous than it is even now. to me, it's gone before the summer or close.
as for the fish sanctuary question, they don't live and thrive in the surf...it's not a coral reef
and completely in the water that thing will break down even faster

yea i dont get the wild life bullshit either. We have an artificial reef program that works very well.....when we put the reefs out where shit actually lives.
Ever walk along a jetty? What is there? Moss and crabs. Which live in just about ANYTHING.

thats a bit different though. That was a thing made that sucked so they just let it fall apart. This was soemthing that happened in a disaster and caused people to die

what a fucking name too...as you just HAD to know that thing would end up under water!
as for it lasting, if that's what your point is, it's made of metal and concrete, designed to hold up to the elements and out to sea about 200 feet off the coast. I'd say a cheap boardwalk roller coaster is not built to the same standards to say the least.
also, it was meant to be a makeshift dock for the ferry system way back when, not a wharf. I ended up becoming a wharf after it broke from its moorings during a storm and has been breaking down ever since in shallow/calmer protected waters (relatively speaking).
At present she remains a Cape May tourist draw, but her condition is rapidly deteriorating. The wreckage is currently split in three pieces, the stern is the most visible section, the middle is completely submerged, and the bow can only be viewed at low tide

Just looking at that thing in the ocean, its not bolted to anything. Id think under current and tide make it completely unstable...pretty amazing to look at though.
