I just read this on Wiki and I wonder if someone can explain to me how this makes sense:
The NFL is an unincorporated 501(c)(6) association,[6][7][8] a federal nonprofit designation,[9] comprising its 32 teams
the NFL is a nonprofit? But, they make HUGE profits

I guess it's technically a league of businesses.

Yeah, "non-profit" doesn't mean that the people who run the organizations don't collect salaries.
People were highly pissed off at what United Way people made when they found out where a huge chuck of the money donated was going.

thats still, to me, bad coaching. How can you not pull the entire offense over and MAKE SURE they all know it?
indeed
and if anyone else moves its just a false start and they kick the fg but the one guy who shouldn't and couldn't move, did
hopefully that doesn't cost em a playoff spot down the road

Makes sense. Its essentially a cooperative for shared resources of a business league.

I've seen a defender and receiver both come down with possession of a ball, and the "tie" going to the reciever... but it didn't look like Tate had both hands on it until the defender's feet hit the turf.
Now they have to drag 11 packers out of the locker room for the PAT? After that?

It's hard to think of any sports league that doesn't do at least some harm to its sport. Shit, even the International Olympic Committee seems to be constantly trying to think of new ways to make the Olympics even more of a corporate nightmare.
Thats because none of the current commissioners have the best interest of their sport in mind. Instead they worry about ways to make the sport more appealing to corporate sponsors, or ways to change the game so that women will enjoy it. For Goodell, his entire time as commissioner seems to have been devoted to 2 things. Conspiring with lawyers to do everything in his power to try and make the players powerless to sue the NFL because of post concussion effects including taking as much violence and hitting out of the game as he can and shilling with the owners to break not only the NFLPA but the referees union as well.
Ive said it 1000 times, hes the worst thing ever to happen to the NFL.
A real commissioner takes his sport, and helps it flourish just the way it is. They maybe tweak it to make things a little more appealing, but they dont overhaul it to try to cater to people that never watched the sport before while simultaneoulsy fucking over the fanbase that made that sport what it is. Its funny, the current WWE actually falls into this same category as well.

the NFL has released their official statement:
In Monday's game between the Green Bay Packers and Seattle Seahawks, Seattle faced a 4th-and-10 from the Green Bay 24 with eight seconds remaining in the game.
Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson threw a pass into the end zone. Several players, including Seattle wide receiver Golden Tate and Green Bay safety M.D. Jennings, jumped into the air in an attempt to catch the ball.
While the ball is in the air, Tate can be seen shoving Green Bay cornerback Sam Shields to the ground. This should have been a penalty for offensive pass interference, which would have ended the game. It was not called and is not reviewable in instant replay.
When the players hit the ground in the end zone, the officials determined that both Tate and Jennings had possession of the ball. Under the rule for simultaneous catch, the ball belongs to Tate, the offensive player. The result of the play was a touchdown.
Replay Official Howard Slavin stopped the game for an instant replay review. The aspects of the play that were reviewable included if the ball hit the ground and who had possession of the ball. In the end zone, a ruling of a simultaneous catch is reviewable. That is not the case in the field of play, only in the end zone.
Referee Wayne Elliott determined that no indisputable visual evidence existed to overturn the call on the field, and as a result, the on-field ruling of touchdown stood. The NFL Officiating Department reviewed the video today and supports the decision not to overturn the on-field ruling following the instant replay review.
The result of the game is final.
Applicable rules to the play are as follows:
A player (or players) jumping in the air has not legally gained possession of the ball until he satisfies the elements of a catch listed here.
Rule 8, Section 1, Article 3 of the NFL Rule Book defines a catch:
A forward pass is complete (by the offense) or intercepted (by the defense) if a player, who is inbounds:
(a) secures control of the ball in his hands or arms prior to the ball touching the ground; and
(b) touches the ground inbounds with both feet or with any part of his body other than his hands; and
(c) maintains control of the ball long enough, after (a) and (b) have been fulfilled, to enable him to perform any act common to the game (i.e., maintaining control long enough to pitch it, pass it, advance with it, or avoid or ward off an opponent, etc.).
When a player (or players) is going to the ground in the attempt to catch a pass, Rule 8, Section 1, Article 3, Item 1 states:
Player Going to the Ground. If a player goes to the ground in the act of catching a pass (with or without contact by an opponent), he must maintain control of the ball throughout the process of contacting the ground, whether in the field of play or the end zone. If he loses control of the ball, and the ball touches the ground before he regains control, the pass is incomplete. If he regains control prior to the ball touching the ground, the pass is complete.
Rule 8, Section 1, Article 3, Item 5 states:
Simultaneous Catch. If a pass is caught simultaneously by two eligible opponents, and both players retain it, the ball belongs to the passers. It is not a simultaneous catch if a player gains control first and an opponent subsequently gains joint control. If the ball is muffed after simultaneous touching by two such players, all the players of the passing team become eligible to catch the loose ball.

and fuck you too, Jerry Jones:
"I didn't see that ending last night," Jones said on KRLD-FM. "I cut it off about halftime."
Jones said he hadn't received any phone calls about the controversy: "I just read a little note in the paper that the Seahawks pulled it out," he said, quickly switching the subject to praise Seattle's team.
...
Pressed further on the matter, Jones made his best sales pitch.
"We can have all kinds of what-ifs," Jones said. "We've played three games and we've got 16 to play. It's exciting. It gives us a lot to talk about on our shows that we have. But fundamentally, when I look at where the league is over the first three ballgames, it's great. Lot of competition."

the NFL has released their official statement:
Quote:
Rule 8, Section 1, Article 3, Item 5 states:
Simultaneous Catch. If a pass is caught simultaneously by two eligible opponents, and both players retain it, the ball belongs to the passers. It is not a simultaneous catch if a player gains control first and an opponent subsequently gains joint control. If the ball is muffed after simultaneous touching by two such players, all the players of the passing team become eligible to catch the loose ball.
This is the part ole one eye was trying to stress last night.
At best, you could say that the GB player "gains control first", and then Tate "subsequently gains joint control"... but, by rule, that is NOT a simultaneous catch.
Interception. GB wins. Pete Carroll goes back home and cheers himself up by remembering the mess he left behind at USC, and how he rode off to Seattle scot free.

I'd also be willing to bet if Brett Favre was still in the league and on the losing end of such a horrendous call the NFL wouldn't be able to end this fiasco fast enough.
Hell they made sure to make a new rule in the offseason because of him. I am almost certain that they changed the playoff overtime rule simply because the golden boy lost the way he did in the NFC Championship.

Dude, completely not being a homer, you would be SHOCKED if you knew the pull that the giants owners have. Mostly because of John Mara's father, but the league exists as it does now mainly because of Wellington Mara. That, and the NFL offices being about one errant michael vick pass away from the Giants offices, they probably have more pull with the league than any other owner. Kraft, Jones, the Rooneys prob have like half the pull of the Maras and Tische's

I didnt name the article. It was called the NFL Power 40. They dont have them ranked by number. They have them seperated by what they do. But on the list of NFL owners hes the 9th mentioned.
Heres the list...
Jerry Jones, 68, Cowboys
High-profile face of America's most valuable sports franchise.
Bob Kraft, 69, Patriots
Only owner who's on the broadcast, labor and finance committees.
Jerry Richardson, 74, Panthers
Former Colts receiver cochairs labor committee; hard-liner.
Bob McNair, 73, Texans
Billionaire who made his fortune in energy business; has the ear of fellow owners.
Tom Benson, 83, Saints
Granddaughter Rita has strong say in team issues; Tom chairs NFL finance committee
Clark Hunt, 45, Chiefs
Rising star settling into role as influential dad Lamar's heir
Dan Snyder, 44, Redskins
Lightning-rod owner whose relationship with DeMaurice Smith could help in negotiating CBA.
Dan Rooney, 78, Steelers
Team's emeritus chairman, now U.S. ambassador to Ireland, remains close adviser to Goodell.
Jeffrey Lurie, 59, Eagles
Former Hollywood producer chairs L.A. stadium committee; arbiter of NFL's return to second-largest market.
Steve Bisciotti, 50, Ravens
Among young owners, league office most admires him and K.C.'s Hunt.
Woody Johnson, 63, Jets

Yeah, they did:
On August 30th, 2012, the NFL and the NFLPA reached an agreement allowing one player placed on injured reserve to be brought back to the active roster.[3] Provided the provisions that the player was on the final 53-man preseason roster (A rule exempted for the 2012 season), and that the injury is deemed to keep this "marquee player" unable to practice or play football for an estimated six weeks, the "marquee player" may be allowed to practice after Week 6, and be activated to play after Week 8.[4]
But if Revis tore his ACL, he's not going to be back this season.

Yes, the Jets are an embarrassment, this is the type of game where Sanchez just shows he's an awful QB, and I want McElroy in there NOW.
That said: Here's my issue:
Last year, the giants had a play where there was a fumble called but by some cockamamie rule where the player "gave up on the play", the play was called dead, no fumble. I'm pretty sure it involved Cruz.
Holmes went down on an injury. There was no contact. His knee was down on the ground. He INTENTIONALLY gave up the ball. Nobody touched him to give up the ball. And here's the key part: After he gave up the ball, he made ABSOLUTELY NO EFFORT TO GO AFTER THE BALL. Why? Because he was injured and he gave up on the play.
So why the hell did the Giants get to keep possession and the Jets didn't?

cause he didnt go to a knee. When cruz was called to give himself up, he was down on his knees. You have to kneel to give yourself up. Holmes fell and was rolling over on his back when he threw the ball away. By rule (stupid or not), you have to be on a knee to give yourself up

So the "real" refs call a probably-bullshit defensive pass interference on the Eagles that almost hands the game to the Giants, then they call a probably-bullshit offensive pass interference on the Giants that hands it back to the Eagles. Fucking hilarious.
But here's one thing I don't want to hear some sports talk radio hack say about this: "These refs aren't any better than the replacement refs!" Bullshit. Calls get blown by the "real" refs all the time. But the problem with the replacement refs wasn't that they blew calls. It was that they just didn't know how to officiate a game overall. Standing around looking like dumbasses, throwing their hats into the middle of the field for players to slip on, "joking" with players about them being on their fantasy league. They were clowns for many other reasons.

Big deal that they are better.

Its like a decent chick following Rosanne . She is gunna look better.
These refs are still bad and were before the lockout.
If the NFL wanted to get it right and win. They would have locked them out for the entire year and guaranteed a full year. That way you would have gotten alot of the college guys to jump up. And maybe even promise them a fulltime gig if they do a good enough job. there would not have been as big of a difference in competence.

Having been witness to this debacle that is the Dallas Cowboys since Aikman retired... Romo deserves better. It's not fair to expect one guy to carry a team when it's a steaming pile of shit. If it's not receivers who can't catch the fucking ball it's receivers who can't stay in the lineup. If it isn't a center who can't snap the fucking ball it's receivers who don't know their routes. If it isn't having no running game it's a coach that got fired from fucking Buffalo... And if it isn't fucking penalty after penalty it's Jerry Jones.
Bryant isn't Moss... He will never be that good. He comes with all the baggage but none of the rewards. Austin is made of glass and hasn't stayed in the lineup enough to make real contributions to the offense. Even Romo's sure thing Witten, the only other star the offense has had since Aikmam/Irvin/Smith, goes through a funk of dropping fucking passes. It's unreal what a clusterfuck this team is and it's all on Jerry Jones. The minute he removes himself and hires a real GM is the minute this team starts winning again. The only time it worked was when he had Jimmy running the whole thing. Switzer was just fucking carryover. He even fucked up the three-peat.
I don't know if Garrett can be the guy. As coach perhaps but I don't know if he'd be capable of running the team like Johnson did. I'm just done. It's the same shit every year. It's like fucking Groundhog Day but instead I'm reliving the same football season over and over again. Parcells got them the closest they've been since the 90's but Jones couldn't fucking handle not being the figurehead of the franchise. The guy can't fucking die fast enough.
