The graduation section in the local paper came out today. Each senior had a picture, a bio, and supplied some "Famous Last Words." Out of around 130 kids, six of them quoted Dr. Seuss.

Three of these fucking geniuses had this:
You have brains in your head.
You have feet in your shoes.
You can steer yourself
any direction you choose.
You're on your own.
And you know what you know.
And YOU are the one who'll decide where to go.

and three more "quoted" Dr. Seuss with this (it's not actually his):
Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened.

I think that space was intended for kids to leave a message about how much fun they had in high school and how they're going to miss everyone, but a large percentage take the opportunity to offer their sanguine advice or erudite wisdom. And as insulting as it is for these brats to be supplying anyone with advice, to quote a book for toddlers is all the more sickening. I can't wait for the jackboot of life to stomp their precocious little faces.

So, somebody's obsessed with highschool kids.

All kids are douchebags. But they think they're so fucking deep. In my yearbook, under my picture, I included a quote from the tv show Moonlighting.

"Don't give up your dreams, because if you stop dreaming you're just wasting eight hours a night."
- David Addison - FTW!!!!

This was my favorite Seuss growing up. I'm not sure why. I seem to be in the minority.

My senior quote was "It is a tale told by an idiot full of sound and fury signifying nothing".

Don't really know why that was my quote.

If you don't have school age kids you may not know what a big fucking deal Dr. Seuss has become as of late. In my town, every year on his birthday the schools go absolutely apeshit. Kids and teachers dress up like The Cat in the Hat or some other character of their choosing (though 99% choose The Cat in the Hat). The curriculum goes out the fucking window that day and it's all assemblies about reading, and craft time (ie. making Cat in the Hat stovepipe hats), school-wide read-alongs, and quiet time where everyone reads a book to themselves that they brought from home.

This has even moved outside the school and I know that Target and Barnes and Noble have an event every year on that day where they have read-longs in the children's book departments and the employees are encouraged to dress up as their favorite character (though 99% choose The Cat in the Hat).

It's a fucking cult of Dr. Seuss that these kids are indoctrinated with since kindergarten so it's probably no surprise that some are going to quote him on the way out of there.

I knew a guy who quoted another famous children's writer. "I'm a gay man!" I may have messed up the quote.

And it will continue. A friend of mine, who is a kindergarten teacher's assistant, has to dress up for Seuss' birthday every year. For at least the next 13 years, there will be certain adults scanning the photos of high school graduates, and wondering the same thing.

Are you abandoning me in the other thread? I kind of had a lot to say tonight.

Whatever happened to old staples like "What a long, strange trip it's been" and "Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it."?

This is a terrible epidemic. I can't believe six kids will be waking up everyday from now on with Dr. Seuss as their mantra. Drop the napalm.

Somewhat related, kinda disturbing:

'Unabomber' Ted Kaczynski: Proud Harvard alumnus -- or taunter? (http://www.latimes.com/news/nation/nationnow/la-na-nn-unabomber-ted-kaczynski-harvard-20120524,0,4498725.story)

...Ted Kaczynski is a member of Harvard's Class of 1962, which is celebrating its 50th reunion. All class members are invited to submit entries for inclusion in the class reunion report, which is distributed to members of the class in advance of their reunion activities. .... A Crimson-faced Harvard Alumni Assn. says it regrets allowing Kaczynski to use its so-called Red Book to update his profile. There, Kaczynski lists his occupation as "prisoner" and includes the following as among his awards: "Eight life sentences, issued by the United States District Court for the Eastern District of California, 1998." He blithely gave his address as the federal prison in Florence, Colo.
