Search engines that don't blow?

It dawned on me today that Google is fucking useless. I can't find a goddamn thing without adding two or three modifiers. The default search gives you nothing but current events and linkspam.

Because of Paul O's Carnivale thread, I wanted to find a list of shows HBO cancelled prematurely, to see if I'd forgotten any I liked. I searched for HBO cancelled and got five full pages (I stopped looking after five) of stories about Luck getting cancelled because 3 horses died. I tried on Bing...their preferred result is page after page of "HBO Cancels 'Hung,' 'Bored To Death'"

Yahoo: "HBO Cancels 'Hung,' 'Bored To Death'"

I've seen this complaint about Google search terms becoming less useful quite a few times, but I haven't seen any evidence of this in my own searches.

I've seen this complaint about Google search terms becoming less useful quite a few times, but I haven't seen any evidence of this in my own searches.

I would go along with this for the most part. It tailors searches from your history.

Maybe if you link your phone number with your gmail account it gives you better results? It's asked me about 100 times to do this; I may give in soon.

My Google search results are fine. Giving your phone number to Google is for account protection purposes and to a lesser extent, to ” localize ” your content.

In the case of a movie or TV search, I strongly recommend you get Firefox and install several search engine plug-ins like IMDB.com and use the Wikipedia search. They do work like a charm for that kind of thing.
