View Full Version : Are "Computer Geeks" a Dying Breed?

They once ruled the computing world. Now everybody has computers: illiterates, senior citizens, regular joes, everybody!
What will the computer geeks do for self preservation?
Is there a light at the end of the tunnel?

No matter what computer geeks can take pride in knowing that no matter what. they can still run circles around people when it comes to programing, files and just other cool shit a computer can do.. For most people all a computer is a really expensive typewriter.. oh its true its true...

I prefer the term "Computer Enthusiast".

However, this breed will continue to exist, although will be recognized by their co-workers and friends by the phrase "Ask **** he/she knows about that".

A non-Computer Enthusiast will never know the joys of debugging a program, translating EBCDIC to ASCII, or discussing the differences between RS-232 and RS-485.

They will never have the joy of reading and providing input on an RFC (my personal favorite is RFC 2549, IP transmission over avian carriers). They will never know the joy of handcoding Assembly into a compiler. They will never know the difference between regular and differential SCSI, and why the latter allows for greater speed, nor feel the joy of tweeking registry entries to have a system do things that it normally wouldn't.

No, this breed you call "Computer Geeks" will continue, and will be known by many names, "Support", "Guru", "Net. Admin", etc. And, as long as there is a "user", there will always be a need for them.

I went to a technical school, (NJIT) and in that time I forgot how there are so many people out there who just have no idea what to do with their computers. We geeks will always be able to impress the "non geeks" when we fix their computers, or install their new hardware, or even show them how to build one from scratch...

...to bad when we're done with that, we have to go to bed alone, but whatever...

Whew! I yearn to become a computer "geek", or shall I say, "enthusiast"?
The above posts are like dirty talk to me!( You have no idea! ) :)

They might be able to fix people's computers, but can they get laid?

Nope. maybe once in a while, but for the most part, nope. I admit that...

one could only hope

my computer geek boyfriend has no problem playing game cube over and over again, but when it comes to sex, he can only handle one banging a day. something is definitely wrong with that

I didn't have too much trouble, but I realize that there were certain types of girls that wouldn't want to be associated with a "geek". Put the instructions on a flowchart, and put some sort of loop in there. Maybe that will help, Jen;)

The above posts are like dirty talk to me!Dirty talk? For you Elle, here's an oldie but still a goodie that I got when I was in HS:

One night when his charge was pretty high, Micro-Farad decided to seek out a cute little coil to help him discharge.

He picked up Milli-Amp and took her for a ride in his Megacycle. They rode across the Wheatstone Bridge and stopped by a Magnetic field with flowing currents and frolicked in the sine waves.

Micro-Farad, attracted by Millie-Amp's characterisic curves soon had her fully charged and proceeded to excite her resistance to a minimum. He gently laid her at ground potential, raised her frequency and lowered her reluctance.

With a quick arc, he pulled out his high voltage probe and inserted it in her socket, connecting them in parallel. He slowly began short circuiting her resistance shunt while quickly raising her thermal conductance level to mil-spec. Fully excited, Milli- Amp mumbled "MHO...MHO...MHO"

With his tube operating well into class C, and her field vibrating with his current flow, a corona formed which instantly caused her shunt to overheat just at the point when Micro-Farad rapidly discharged and drained off every electron into her grid.

They fluxed all night trying various connectors and sockets untill his magnet had a soft core and lost all of its field strength.

Afterwards, Milli-Amp tried self-induction and damaged her solenoids and with his battery fully discharged, Micro-Farad was unable to excite his field. Not ready to be quiescent, they spent the rest of the evening reversing polarity and blowing each others fuses.

Anyone ever see that SNL sketch called, "Nick Burns, your company computer guy"? It's so freakin funny, it's about a computer geek who walks around and fixes problems on people's computer while insulting the person who doesn't know how to fix it.

IT'S TIME TO PLAY THE GAME-AHHH!
