Firefighters on eastern Long Island are battling brush fires fanned by strong winds.
Suffolk County Police say fires were still burning in Ridge and Manorville early Monday evening. Officials report injuries to firefighters, but their number and extent of their injuries were not immediately known.
Residents in parts of Riverhead have been ordered to evacuate as plumes of smoke could be seen for miles.
Officials at Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton say a fire was reported on the northern portion of the massive complex. Approximately 2,000 acres, including 300 acres on the Brookhaven Lab site, were reported burning.
The lab spans a 5,265-acre site in the Pine Barrens region of Long Island. No lab buildings were reported damaged.
The lab says its sewage treatment plant was evacuated as a precaution.
Also the kent animal shelter is being evacuated. so if you're looking for a pet, adopt or foster an animal from them. 631-871 4012
