So many jokes. So many...... and yet I can't. But you guys can. Please go ahead and do so.

I just hope that this doesn't keep a person who's not a total sack of shit from getting a heart transplant in time.

This is probably going to do more to discourage organ donation than anything else could. No one will want to think that their loved ones' organs could possibly go towards helping keep Dick Cheney alive.

So the talk now is that some are saying Cheney was too old for a transplant. Did anyone raise a stink when Ted Kennedy was getting all that brain cancer treatment well into his
70's?

No they didnt - I agree with you on this.

But they werent taking someones brain and transplanting it into Ted's body - while someone younger was waiting on a donor brain.

Bill Press, some progressive talker who is now simulcast on Current TV was talking about this today

I saw on the news that he waited almost 2 years. Usually the time slot is about 6 months.

That is such a stupid, nonsensical comparison that it could only come from you. There is a very limited number of hearts available for transplant, so much so that doctors must, because of pure logistics, rule out some people because there simply is not enough to go around. So doctors aren't going to chance a heart transplant on a patient that they feel has a very small chance of recovery when they could give it to a patient with a very high chance of recovery. If getting a heart for transplant was as easy as say, going to the pharmacy and getting fucking cancer drugs, this wouldn't be a consideration.

In the end he had the transplant which means a team of doctors with infinitely more knowledge about this than us cleared him for the transplant. So that's that.

Perhaps this country could just grow up and allow people to sell their organs. Besides the fact that we should have the right to own our own bodies, we'd never have to worry about an organ shortage again.

big difference. one is taking a heart that could be used for someone younger and who could get more life out of the heart. the other is treatment for any sickness or illness which we do for anyone no matter how old they are.

no but he shouldn't have gotten one because he was an alcoholic and didnt deserve one as i believe that is the rule when it comes to liver transplants.

But who is anyone to determine the age limit? What should the age limit be? Should only married people get transplants because they have a spouse and children? This opens the door to selectiveness.

In general, I prefer that medical professionals (i.e. doctors) make the decision, not some pencil-pusher. And a vital organ shouldn't go to the person with the best health care coverage it should go to the person who needs it most.

Thats a big worry some have once our nationwide health care kicks in. Many think that medical necessities like transplants, life saving surgeries etc wont happen for the old and only for the young. That a pencil pusher will decide who gets that heart due to age and condition.

I find that a bit extreme but I have heard some talking about that.

Insurance companies don't have anything to do with it.

Insurance companies don't have anything to do with it.

When you have a policy that doesn't cover transplants, or is close enough to the lifetime or yearly maximum that they won't cover it, they do have quite a bit to do with it.

Thanks HBox. That was my point. I know the insurance company doesn't directly decide on transplants but if you don't have the coverage you don't get the transplant.
