Warning: This is very mundane, yet mystifying.

Today, my wife called me and asked where the blade/base was for the blender jar, which I had just used a week ago. I said that I didn't know; I had washed it put it on the dish rack to dry and hadn't seen it since.

A little history: We had a nice kitchenaid blender, then my mother-in-law moved out of state and she left us her cuisanart blender, among other appliances. I broke the glass jar of the kitchenaid about a year ago. I assumed that I threw everything away, including the lid, base, and motor assembly. The stuff from the in-law was a jumble, and I never found the lid to the cuisanart blender. There were various parts to other food processors and what not. All of this stuff was in a large drawer in the kitchen.

Last week, I busted out the cuisanart to make some smoothies. I disassembled the blender immediately and washed it. I remember the base to the blender jar specifically because the little blade disk got lodged in the drain and I had to fish it out. This was a standard 3-part blender base where there is the plastic ring, the blade disk, and the rubber gasket. As can be expected, this gets screwed onto the bottom of the blender jar.

So I get home today and asked my wife if she had found the base for the blender. She had, but she said that she couldn't get the blender jar onto the motor. So I pulled out the motor and jar and tried to put them together. It did not fit. I unscrewed the blade base and just as a matter of habit tried to remove the blade disk and gasket. It was all one piece, impossible to take apart. This was not the 3-piece base that I had just used. I looked at the 1-piece for brand markings but there were none.

I asked my wife about when she had put the blender away last week after it dried. She remembered putting the 3-piece base together, screwing it onto the jar, and putting it into the drawer. We have not used it since. Today, she said she opened the drawer and pulled out the jar, which she assumed still had the 3-piece base on it, but apparently had the alien 1-piece, which does not fit the motor. Our old Kitchenaid had a 3-piece base too.

I looked every where in the kitchen where the 3-piece base could have been. It is nowhere to be found. So some anonymous entity came into our house, removed the 3-piece and sent it to the nether regions, and installed a completely foreign and useless 1-piece base.

simple. your wife broke one of the pieces of the 3-piece assembly, disposed of evidence, and tried to replace them with the 1-piece assembly. when it didn't fit, she put everything back in the drawer, and feigned ignorance to avoid taking responsibility.

My vote is on the new neighbors. Now go over to their still-creepy, but now inhabited house and get it back! At night.
