I am of course referring to the movie Castaway with Tom Hanks. It is such a great movie and I have to watch it even though I own it on DVD. This movie is the ultimate vacation getaway/survivor episode rolled into one great bun... I know lots of people didnt like cause it didnt have a lot of dialogue. Or that the ending wasnt so much happy or sad, it was just an ending. But I love all the emotions that you feel, when you see his character go through everything he goes through...You have to give a great big "dohhhhhh" at the end when he does return and he finds out the love of his life is married. God that stings...Anywhos, I love this movie and definetly consider this one of my favs.

didn't care for it that much. overrated. i thought showing him off the island definitely ruined the feeling of isolation and everything. i also got sick after seeing it. it was a better performance than Crowe though that year but by far not the best of the year.

If I had Helen Hunt waiting for me, I'd have stayed on the island.

She does have that giant freaking forehead and that slightly down syndromed look. But after her, I like the essay in human lonliness and how the polarization of a man takes a while to get away from...

I didn't like it at all. I think it was overrted, dragged out and just dull. The previews made it out to be much better than it actually was

Once again prince that is wandering from the subject at hand...why I love Castaway is that it is Robinson Carusoe put onto film, set in modern times where people have less survival skills than our forebearers. Our forebearers had rough living as it was so adapting to that type of role that Tom Hanks faced is less difficult than todays corporate/globalized people. I will admit that I am a huge fan of books and novels where the hero has to fend for himself, survive in difficult terrain and what not. True, castaway could have used a villian, like a native headhunting tribe, or perhaps a shark that terrorized the reefs...but hey, the movie is what it is, and everyone is entitled to there own opinions...

Doogie,

When I first read your thread I thought you were going a little over the top about Castaway. I remember liking it in the theater but not being crazy about it. Castaway was on cable the other night. So since I had this thread fresh in my head, I decided to watch it again. I gotta give it up to Hanks. He is awesome in this movie, even more than I remembered. He was definetely robbed at oscar time. The Academy casted Tom Hanks away.. guh guh guh. I really liked the ending too. I know a lot of people bitched about it though.

I also lucked out tonight at Blockbuster. I got a used copy of it on DVD.

I dont know if I agree with that opinion...I say that it was a good role considering that it was essentially a one man show. But compared to some of the other people that were nominated Hanks definetly did not deserve the award. Washington did a good job as the Hurricane (notice that there were two blacks nominated in one category in one year, Hollywood's finally breaking away from Jim Crow), and Crowe was great as Maximus.
