I just got a pair today and they are incredible. The sound quality is perfect and they pick up sounds you didnt expect to hear.
Let me thank my cousin (crippler aka spe5150) for surprising me with them for absolutely no reason at all. We had been talking about them for a while and he really wanted a pair so today he told me he ordered himself a pair and they arrived. I went there to hang out and to try them out. After trying them on and hearing how amazing they sounded he busted out another brand new box and said here. The fucker ordered me a pair as a gift! Very nice of him, and totally unnecessary!
I would definitely recommend them to anyone looking for a new pair headphones!

I've listened to them. My review would be that they're okay if enormously overpriced. I tend to prefer more neutral headphones, but if you want headphones with a punchier low end you can get much cleaner bass with less bleed and better build quality at a comparable price from various models from Ultrasone, Sony, M-Audio etc.

I never loved earbuds so I wanted to get the over ear headphones. He ordered 2 sets of the pro version which are the bigger of the over ear and they also have a movable ear.

Consumer Reports really ran down the Beats Audio product line.
Their companion site, Consumerist, put it on their list of worst Christmas last year.

I think the biggest problem with Beats and a few other similar headphones like 50 cents and others is the price. They do sound great but I think $300 is way too high.

I paid $40 for a pair of Sennheisers from Amazon that kick the living shit out of any of the Beats headphones.
The fact that Monster Cable is behind this pretty much tells you all you need to know about these things.

It's all in the pigment of their logo on the insulation, that's what makes their cable so much better than generic.

I bought a pair of Sennheisers a couple months ago. Not very stylish, but great sound, especially considering the price.

I've used & owned maybe 25 pairs of in-ears over the last 10 years ranging from 800 bucks to as little as 99.
I absolutely hated the Dre "Beats" earphones. The bass simply wasn't there. So much so... that I thought they were defective. The replacement pair also sounded brittle. Returned them too.
For pure FUN and low-end punch and just overall impact, I highly highly suggest the Shure 215 in-ears. They deliver a fun rush of bass, the cord is replaceable, and they have a nice slim profile. The silicone tips will last forever. (fuck those foam tips, they lose their shape AND they collect earwax like a mother fucker)

They feature a single dynamic driver (rather than a balanced armature). Or... in other words... there's a small speaker in there that moves air. NOT a hearing aid armature.
For about 100 bucks... these are tough to beat.
AS WITH ANY EARPHONES: YOU MUST GET A PERFECT SEAL... OR YOU WILL LOSE ALL THE LOW END. There will be ZERO BASS.
Find your perfect fit... or you're wasting your time.

I splurged on a pair of Grado SR-325s last year, and they sound fantastic. They're not exactly made for on-the-go listening, but they're really nice for home listening.
Those in-ear earbuds simply don't work for me. I bought a pair of the Apple ones a few years ago, and even with the three different attachments, they wouldn't stay in my ears.

I use earbuds when I sleep to listen to talk/music. I have never owned quality comfortable ones. I sleep on my side and spin rotisserie style all night, so usually I will have one earbud in my upward-facing ear and the other earbud floating on the bed. I have to wake up and switch ear phones a few times a night as I roll over. This is not an easy life for earbuds, so they deteriorate rapidly. Foam/Silicone plugs detach and disappear, cables snap, etc.
So my considerations are:
1)small comfortable fit so that I can just wear both earbuds all night. Uncomfortable earbuds are really uncomfortable when squished inside your ear against the pillow.
2)silicone tips that stay put on the motherfucker, not this shit that pops off all the time.
3)sturdy cable to earbud connection, not this shit that rips out of the earbud with the strength of tissue paper
So do you think those shures would be a good choice for me?

It's tough to say. The 215's do indeed have a tight profile... but I don't know if how comfortable you'd be with the weight of your head on them while they're in your ear.
The tips they provide are the best I've ever used. They stay put. They isolate. They clean & dry very easily. They're comfortable. Yada yada. I like them a lot. The Shure's come with a generous assortment of tips in various sizes. (but remember... you absolutely HAVE to use the ones that fit you perfectly, or you might as well forget about hearing any real bass)
I still suggest that you only use one (in your upward facing ear) but, that's just me.
At 100 bucks.... it's worth a shot. At the very least... you'll a good pair of in-ears for your commute or whatever. These 215's can EASILY handle a bass-heavy EQ curve so... have fun playing with your iPod settings and finding an audio preset that's good for you. The 215's won't distort.
If you're in NYC... I'll let you borrow mine for a day or two. I have extra tips and everything.

Thanks for the info and offer. I'm in Nor Cal, but thanks anyway. I think I will get those. How sturdy is the connection of the cable? I've never had a pair that is meant to disconnect there. Also, assuming the use of the perfectly-fitted tips, how do they do in noisy enviroments like a plane? When I fly I usually borrow my wife's big Bose over the ear headphone, but those drain batteries like crazy.

The connection is rock solid. I've never once had them disconnect accidentally... and believe me... I've snagged the cable on a few doorknobs n' stuff. It won't come out unless you line up the dots (you'll understand when you see them up close) and actually snap them apart.
As for the noise reduction... if I were on a plane... I probably would use the "comply" foam tips (included). They are more effective. The label claims that they block out 37db but... that's simply not true. It's nowhere near that much.
In-ears such as these do not offer noise reduction*. They are not active (battery powered) noise reduction earphones. They do however provide passive (non powered) ambient noise REJECTION... which is a fancy way of saying that they physically block out room-noise.
(*Noise reduction headphones have a tiny speaker/mic system that hears white noise, and then create an "anti-noise" to create a cancellation effect. )

I've had the Shure 315s for a couple years and really love them. Mine don't have the disconnect at the ear bud, but they have a disconnect in the center of the cord. i think it is there as an emergency disconnect if you snag the cord on something.
The sound is truly amazing and customer service impressive. This is my third pair...the first two pairs I returned to Shure for a warranty replacement. On the first pair, the cord starting coming loose from the ear bud and the second pair started rattling really bad in one ear during low bass. I 'lost' my receipt so had no way to prove I was still in the year of warranty, so they just gave me the benefit of doubt and replaced them.

I have a pair of skull candy that make a perfect seal, and all it ends up doing is allowing me to hear everything I don't want to hear. If the cable touches something, it resonates in my ear, I can hear every step I take, and every breath I make. I found them incredibly annoying to walk with.
Is this just because they might be shitty ear phones, or are all tight sealed ear buds like that?

Yeah, I'm pretty sure any of the sealed earbuds would have this effect. When I first tried out the Apple ones, that was the first thing I noticed. Take a few steps and... "WOOSH WOOSH WOOSH." Maybe it's not as noticeable if you run the cord under your shirt. Either way, my freakish ears wouldn't hold them in place anyway.
