I've currently got my first batch of homemade mint ice cream hard freezing. A review will follow. I'm using this machine:

Do you make homemade ice cream, if so, got any good recipes?

I remember making homemade ice cream as a school project it was by far the best chocolate ice cream i have even eaten. About 10 years ago i bought a machine and it came out great but way too much work and cleaning for what amounted to a pint of ice cream. The problem is when you want ice cream you want to go to the freezer and its there or go to the store and pick up a half gallon. When you use one of these machines you have to have all the ingredients, mix it up in the machine for x amount of time and then wait for it to freeze. Too much work for ice cream.

This thing makes two quarts.

At this point, it's not cost effective unless I find a better source for cream. It was 4.50 at shop-rite and I can get a gallon of ice cream for less than that.

This machine is different - the bowl freezes first, so you can have soft serve ice cream in 25 mins.

yeah mine was like that too, you had to freeze the inner bowl/tub thing. So I used to keep it in the freezer all the time so it was ready to go if i wanted ice cream. After a while of I decided it was taking up space in the freezer and after that I never used it again. Now that you mentioned it, it was very expensive to make it myself. I just bought a half gallon of Turkey hill for $2.50.

same here on all those counts. it's not cost effective, but i think it's more about quality than that.

Yup. Very expensive. But, thinking about getting ice cream in the past from some of the better eateries, it's always been pricey there, too. And, that's the nearest in quality; not store-bought, or even those Cold Stone ripoffs. Plus, I'm a sucker for extremely clean dairy products, so I have control over my ingredients. Lastly, creative flavors, or turning custard are great options to activate by doing it yourself. Clumsy gear, planning ahead, expensive prospect factors, aside.

Let me get this straight . . .

You can buy a half gallon of ice cream on sale, at any grocery store, any day of the week for about $2.00.

You spent close to $100 on a Cuisinart ice cream maker.

Then you have to buy all of the ingredients, which you yourself complain about being expensive.

You come on here to brag about it like "Look at me I'm making my own ice cream. What a fucking connoisseur I am. I literally think my shit is ice cream." excuse the pun.

When all is said and done you're going to have to make about 1,000 gallons of that shit before it begins to pay for itself.

Yet, in another thread you hold yourself up as an example of frugality and thriftiess because you refuse to spend an extra dollar for your favorite bottle of BBQ sauce.

On lazy summer days when my kids were younger, I used to fill up the kiddie pool with Sweet Bay Ray's BBQ sauce and we used to sit in there all afternoon just wrasslin' and dipping chicken nuggets and french fries. Don't let it be said that Judge Smails is afraid to spend some scratch for the enjoyment of his progeny. I'm just looking for a little consistency in people who would preach about fiscal responsibility.

Yeah, but it's a waste of money. Plus Sweet Baby Ray's knows it's good, so it charges a premium cost. Bottle of Bullseye (which we both like) is like 1.50, Sweet Baby Ray's is like 3 bucks.<!-- / message --><!-- sig -->

I have a bottle of Sweet Baby Rays in my pantry right now...

I like Bulls Eye.

I will test SBR and report back.

Until then, I cannot say if Tenbats is just being a retard....although I'm leaning towards yes.

Actually, let's go over a couple of things.

1) The Ice Cream maker was a Christmas present for my wife.

2) Although the retail price of the Ice Cream machine is 100 bucks, I paid half that. BECAUSE I'M CHEAP.

3) I just said it wasn't cost effective. That's all. Most of the ingredients to make ice cream we already have in the house except for the heavy cream.

Sigh. It was over buying two bottles of BBQ sauce, one of which Liz and the baby wouldn't eat (SBR) over buying one bottle of BBQ we BOTH like that's half the price. (Bullseye)

So it's like, paying 4.50 for two bottles of BBQ sauce, one of which liz won't eat, or paying 1.50 for one bottle of BBQ sauce that we'll both eat.

Excellent point.

Although the machine is very loud and Gwen did not like the noises it made.

That said, I made a batch of Mint Cookie ice cream last night.

The mouth feel and the texture of the ice cream is pretty good. However, it leaves a weird post-mouth feel. Like your mouth is coated with something.

The flavoring agent we used (peppermint extract) was a bit overpowering.

Will need some more trial and error.

thats another thing, the waste when it doesnt come out right. making vanilla or choc is easy and does taste better then store bought. but when you want to try to make all these other flavors there seems to be a lot more bad batches because most people dont use the proper flavorings or use too little or too much. whats the next flavor you guys are going to make?

I think the much more important question we need to be asking here is what the hell is wrong with your family???? who DOESNT like Sweet Baby Rays? original, honey, hickory and brown sugar, hot n spicy??? they're ALL good. They're award winning. It says so RIGHT ON THE BOTTLE.

But yeah i got that icecream maker thing, its in my attic collecting dust, along with some queer fondue thing and a quesadilla maker all of which have never been used. I would've sold you all 3 for 30 bucks.

Im pretty sure theres a Magic Fountain/Baskin Robbins/Dairy Queen/Mom and Pop ice cream place nearby, just bring your kid to there. You'll still be a hero.

My wife's a fucking hippie who refuses to eat High Fructose Corn Syrup or let the baby eat it. I won't fault her on it, but it does make shopping more difficult at times.

A gallon for less than $4.50? Are you talking super cheap quality stuff? The best price I can get is 1.75 quarts for $3.00.

I meant to say half gallon, which is 2 quarts, which is basically what 1,75 quarts was before the grocery shrink ray hit it.

We usually get the trader joe's high end stuff... no HFCS.

That's what I thought. And even 1.75 is hard to find. It went to that size years ago, but most of the major brands even are down to 1.5 now.

I'm still looking for a cheaper heavy cream source. Two local supermarkets had it at the same price, which is 4.50 a quart.

However, in reading the Ben and Jerry's ice cream cookbook, I've realized that one key ingredient my first batch of ice cream lacked was eggs.

So I'm gonna make a vanilla batch tomorrow (with eggs) and see how that turns out.

In searching for a cheap source of Heavy Cream to make home made ice cream, I discovered Halo Farm in Trenton, NJ.

http://www.halofarm.com/

3 pints of Super-High quality (i.e. Haagen Dasz quality) for 6 bucks.

Oh yes, it's delicious.

We now go every few weeks with a cooler and ice bricks to stock up. It's AMAZING.
