and to those saying its a jewish deli sandwich, in some cases yes if you dont get cheese. most regular delis including many if not all italian delis make them with swiss cheese so its not a just a jewish deli item. if it doesnt have sole slaw or russian dressing its just a meat on rye not a sloppy joe.

Here's an excerpt from the Wikipedia "sloppy joe" entry:
Variations on the term
In parts of New Jersey, sloppy joe refers to a completely different type of sandwich. There are a handful of variations depending on the deli, but it will always include some sort of deli meat (turkey, ham, roast beef, or sliced cow tongue), Swiss cheese, cole slaw, and Russian dressing on rye bread. Legend has it, the sandwich was named after "Sloppy Joe's Bar" in Havana, Cuba. This is where Robert Sweeney, the mayor of Maplewood, first discovered a similar sandwich in 1934 and created a new version which found its way onto the menu at the "Town Hall Deli" in South Orange. It is said that the best sloppy joe comes from the Millburn Deli in Millburn, New Jersey. The version at the Towne Deli across from the New Providence train station historically was prepared sans corn beef or pastrami.
That must be some really shitty parts of NJ. And seriously. WHO THE FUCK IN SOUTH ORANGE IS GONNA EAT THIS SHIT?

yea because of perception. its fine. you havent spent much time here, and most of the places most people from out of state see are shit. But if you actually got to see some of the other places that most people dont know, the places you need to DRIVE to (trains are gay). Its actually a pretty fuckin awesome place that allows you in the course of the year to do almost anything you want. surf, beach, ski, mountain climb, culteural things, take a quick trip to NYC. its actually pretty fuckin awesome.
And i was born in NH and lived there til i was 4. so i dont have to own this place. if it sucked, id be the first to tell you.
I think I just hate Jersey so much because people are so proud of being from there. It's like Texas.

If you're into olives and veggies on a sammich, it's awesome.
If they do it right, they'll take their olive salad (which, again, if done right is basically olives and giardiniera), and let that soak into real "Muffaletta bread" (kinda like focaccia, but not), then salami, ham, pepperoni, capicola, provolone and emmentaler (another "swiss" like cheese, but usually they'll go cheap and just give you plain ol swiss).
Some places will heat it up and soften the cheese a bit... but even if they don't, it's pretty damn tasty.
If you're ever in New Orleans, find your way to the "Central Grocery", and check it out. They invented the thing, so it's the only place to find a "true" muffaletta... but a lot of other places try.
And look at the size of the bread before you order "one". A "whole" sandwich has been known to feed up to 4 people. They sell quarter and half sammiches too. They beat Ronnie B to the punch on the "half slice" idea.

Pa is fucking bad outside of the NE corridor and Philly (fucking CRAZY driving on the Schuylkill Expressway) in respect to both left lane and slow driving. The Schuylkill is a fucking insane road, one of the craziest I've ever been on when it's ripping, and the exits and other drivers are insane too.
Constructed over a period of ten years from 1949 to 1959, a large portion of the expressway predates the 1956 introduction of Interstate Highway System; many of these portions were not built to contemporary standards.[3] The rugged terrain, limited riverfront space covered by the route and narrow spans of bridges passing over the highway have largely stymied later attempts to upgrade or widen the highway.
Its narrow lane and left shoulder configuration, left lane entrances and exits (nicknamed "merge or die"), common construction activity and generally congested conditions have led to many accidents, critical injuries and fatalities, leading to the highway's humorous nickname of the "Surekill Expressway" or in further embellishment, "Surekill Distressway".

most of the highways in NJ are already 3 lanes, some are 4 and even 5 and people still spread out across the whole fuckin thing. Also, jersey cops are pricks about the passing on the right shit, so if you flew by everyone in the right lane, the second you went back over to the middle, a cop (if he was around) would immediately come bang you on it.

I have to agree those assholes piss me off sooo much too. If I, or others, bc I don't go too much over the limit, who are you to say they can't. If they can handle it, aren't 90 and who knows, may have an emergency, who are you to make that call for them. I know what you mean. the act is called Wolf Packing up here and its technically illegal. but the roads are so fuckin busy that even when traffic is moving here 70+, all 3 lanes are usually full. But in jersey it is not illegal to be in the left lane and just driving. its treated as just another lane and thats why we get so mad when people dont have the courtesy to move.
And ironically, i decided to leave at 9pm to come back from VA beach, and it took me like 4:45 to get home. Fuckin stupid virginia, maryland and delaware (i took the rt 13 way down instead of taking 95 and the beltway all the way around DC cause i was going to northern VA Beach where the houses and shit were)
I dont know if its NOT illegal I think it is illegal but just not enforced. I dont know for sure but I thought I heard it always was technically illegal?!

I bet you had your left turn signal on the whole time too, old man.

As good as sandwiches are, there's only so much you can say about them. Driving is a subject with no end to the opinions.
I agree that VA is horrible as snoogans said (particularly Northern VA) but I'm pretty sure what underdog described can get you a ticket here (also particularly in Northern VA. And here (and in most states) it's not called the "fast lane" or the "left lane". It's the "passing lane". That's how you get the ticket. If you are in that lane, and you just stay there, you aren't passing. You're traveling. And you will get a ticket for it.

I wish so because they never do. And the worst offenders are Maryland drivers. Every time some asshole doesn't move over from the passing lane, 9 times out of 10 it's a car with a Maryland plate.

I'll see your Maryland, and raise you with Florida.

That thing sounded awful until I read salami, ham, pep, capicola....so basically it's an italian hoagie except for the awful olive salad and muff bread.
Yeah, like I said, if you don't like olives, don't bother. Although they don't completely "dominate" the taste, they make their presence known.
I'm not a huge fan, and think it would be just as good with just the giardiniera.
Damn, now I want a real Chicago style beef sandwich, and yes, wit the giardiniera! Do you really have to ask?

Large American on a seeded hard roll with Lettuce, Tomato, Dry (I know, but hate soggy sandwiches). But it's gotta be joined by Wise Ridges Sour Cream and Onion chips with a black Cherry soda. That would definitely be a last meal on death row for me.

i was in chicago last week. i thought buena beef and portillos were much better than al's. also, dipping the whole sandwich makes it a bit too messy, but those are some damn tasty sandwiches.
any places in ny make italian beef?

Al's was just the first place I could remember that I knew put giardiniera on theirs.
Mr Beef is pretty damn tasty too.
My mother does a pretty decent Italian beef at home. I tried to replicate hers, but my first attempt was pretty sad. Edible, but just not the same.
I think I'm going to give it one more shot for the superbowl this year.

They are referring to the 'special' as a Jersey Sloppy Joe in the interrobangs superbowl food article.

Yeah, Ron & fez is the first time I ever heard of it, so that only makes sense.
