That's why I never bother with PC games. I've been playing it on Xbox since Friday and haven't even had a stutter. The only issue I've seen with it is some weird texture thing that only happens if you install the game, but I've yet to see it.

I like games that like me. No matter how great the controls are, there is still the fact that you die early and often. I don't have the patience for that. Giants and Skyrim are my limit.

Also, I've been playing for six hours straight and the game crashed twice on me. I'd consider a full week without an issue pretty good for a Bethesda game.

I've played this game for 80 hours and I just now got the horn of whatever for the Greybeards. I'm level 41 and just killed a giant in one-on-one combat.

I could turn up the difficulty, but I'm a lazy bastard and just want to wander through the game like a God, slaying whatever I please and laughing at the puny giants as they lumber into my Legendary Ebony Greatsword and easily picking every lock in the game with my one unbreakable lockpick.

My only problem at this point are the two sidequests that the game wouldn't let me complete. Apparently I'm still supposed to help a woman out of a dungeon even though I shot her full of arrows because she decided to stand between the dungeon and the open world instead of going to freedom.

I've been having a lot of fun playing this game, but...
I'm pretty surprised by the amount of design inconsistencies in this game. There's some really amateurish quirks and as far as I can tell there hasn't been one patch released yet.

My current favorite Bethesdisms:

Magic is referred to as "Magicka". Oooh, it's so different than what other games use. It sounds so exotic. I understand this probably has it's roots in earlier games in the series, but if you're going to rename something by changing a few letters, at least change all instances of it. One of the helpful quotes on the eternal loading screen refers to Magic as "Magic".

Interacting with vendors, chests, and crafting devices is really inconsistent. If you are removing items from a chest/satchel, pressing X puts everything from the chest into your inventory, which can be a pain in the ass if you do it accidentally. Well don't do it accidentally then. Unfortunately, it happens to me all the time because when you are putting items into a chest, pressing X stores a single item. So for crafting items, where you are constantly removing a few items from a chest, then putting them back after crafting, having X change values really blows chimp. Especially if the items are ingredients, because in order to remove one item from a chest, you press A. In order to store an item, you press X. So you end up accidentally pressing A to store an item, which now means to consume/eat that item. Why would they flip/flop what a button does like this?

That last issue contributes to making Smithing a really inconvenient procedure after you've accumulated a lot of smithing ingredients. You have to go to your house and enter, which means a lengthy loading screen. Inside, you have to deposit enough of your everday carry items so that you have enough room to carry the smithing ingredients. Now you exit your house, another loading screen. Run down to the blacksmith shop to use their equipment. Now you can craft some items. I need some leather strips, so I'll use the hide tanning thing. Ok, let's wait for the "my character is sitting down at the hide tanning thing" animation to play for a second. Ok, so let's change some leather into leather strips. Wait, I can't see from this screen how many leather strips I already have, and I don't want to use up all of the leather, so let me exit the hide tanning thing. Wait for the standing up from the hide tanning thing animation to play. Ok, so I can check my inventory now. I' going to need some more leather. Let me check with the blacksmith chick. Oh wait, she's using the forge. Hey bitch, you got any leather? Wait for the "blacksmith lady is saying the same thing she says every time I open a conversation with her" animation to play. Just sell me the items and stop saying the same thing to me every time, lady. Ok, so I got my leather finally. Go back to the tanning thing, wait for the sitting animation. Convert some leather, standing up animation plays. Ok, ready to craft. I'm going to make 4 orc armors to really raise my smith skill, so I need to use the forge. Dammit, that blacksmith bitch is still using it. Wait for the "blacksmith bitch is standing up from the forge so that I can use it" animation to play. Wait for the "getting into position at the forge" animation to play. Craft some shit up. Dammit, now I am overloaded and have to trudge to the lady to sell the armor I made. Hey lady, wait up, I need to sell this shit so that I don't have to trudge around! Fuck, she's going into the shop. I can't catch up to her, dammit. Now I have to go in the shop. Trudge over, enter the shop, another loading screen. Sell items, leave the shop, another loading screen. On and on, animations, loading screens, inventory shuffling, obstacles in the way. It kind of sucks.

My biggest annoyance is the cash on hand vendors have. Most have like 700 gold on hand. Sell one or two decent items and they are wiped until the next gold cycle. So to make quick gold you have to tour the country like some hippie selling your shit off, travel, sell, go home to grab more shit in your container, rinse repeat. I have like 20,000 worth of items just sitting in a container because it is such a pain in the ass to sell it as quickly as you amass it.

Chimee
11-26-2011, 10:59 AM
I have a piece of armor that I wear solely because it's worth 10,000 gold and I know I will never be able to sell it.

Also, the most annoying glitch that happened to me was when I paid the Sky-Forge guy for high-level smith training, then go to sell me pile of goods to him, the good would go to him, but the gold amounts wouldn't change. I lost 40,000 gold to that bastard.

Yeah, I understand that it is more realistic, as is having a carry weight limit. But this is a single player game, and those things don't do anything to add to the fun.

Now I'm pissed at this game. At this point I've wandered everywhere, done most things so now I'm just focusing on quests that get me achievements, but silly me, I expected this to go smoothly. Turns out, when you first get into the Thieve's Guild, you need to hold on to your armor because without it, you'll never be able to finish the questline if you're playing on a console. PC users, of course, can just pop up some command bullshit and give themselves some new ones. As for me, I get to sit and stare at another non-completed quest as the result of some glitchy bullshit.

I'll also never own a home in Riften, so thanks, Bethesda, for driving me so OCD insane that I may have to be institutionalized after finishing the game.

Instant mod installation through steam instead of browsing the mod sites, downloading, unzipping and installing manually.

Also bethsoft is releasing the creation tools they used to create Skyrim and promised more and more patches. Promising not just a few patches but a lot during the games life. Seems Bethsoft actually learned from the past.

Am I missing something?

I just grinded Smithing to 100 so that I could make Dragon Armor. Daedric Armor and Weapons at 90 Smithing was badass. Daedric stuff looks badass, and it has badass numbers. I've been saving these cocksucking dragon parts for days, lugging them back home at the expense of other loot. Then when you go to craft the shit, it weighs so much you either have to crawl to the forge from your home or make trips back and forth, both of which options really add to the fun of the game. Ingots of all other material weigh 1 pound, yet this horseshit weighs 15 pounds. Hmm, strange. For hours, I've been looking at Dragon Smithing at the pinnacle of the Smithing tree, but here in the Smithing queue at the forge, it is behind Daedric on the list. Well this kinda sucks, there aren't any dragon weapons, just armor. That's weird, every other Smithing level includes weapons. I'd imagine that a material that is good for making armor would make weapons too. Oh well, at least I get to make some badass armor. Wait a second. This armor looks pretty silly. It actually has bones dangling off of it like some cannibal tribe's primitive garb. It's always good for badass warriors to dangle clinkety clanking items off of their armor. Oh well, at least it's gonna have some "sweet numbers". What the fuck? This garbage has lower numbers than the daedric armor?!

Why would they do this? It can't be a bug, and it just makes no sense at all. Silliness.

Different character builds are going to have different requirements. How are you going to play?

For my mace swinging orc, food became irrelevant after just a few levels. And honestly, potions almost never come into play unless I take huge damage from magic users.

But alchemy is still really valuable as a moneymaker. Start eating ingredients and find out what they do. You can end up getting $200/ea for potions made from cheapass flowers. Plus you can create fortify enchanting potions that allow you to craft awesome shit.

...and fortify crafting potions. I harvested every ingredient I could find and would just store it on my alchemy station. Then when I was bored or needed to level, I just started crafting potions. This method usually leaves you with way more potions than the stores can afford to buy at one time, but you can either wait 48 hours for their money to regen or just store them for later. I would gain 2-3 character levels at a time doing this at the beginning.

Yeah, I have been trying to get all of the different ores I have run across but hauling all of that shit back pisses me off and going through the motions.

best smithing place you have found?

Do you have a house yet? They cost 5k gold and you need to get in good with the jarl to buy one. It's easy to do a few quest for the jarl of whiterun and once you get 5k buy the house. Then you can dump all your shit there.

I like to smith in whiterun at the place next to the front gate. A man works inside and a woman is outside, and they both have their own stock so you can do more iron daggers here than most places. If you had the coin and really wanted to you could just bop around to all the forges in each city and level really fast.

There is also a stone that will give you a blessing that makes the armor that you're wearing have no weight. It's called the Steed Stone and it's to the west of Solitude I think. Check out gamefaqs.com.

I agree that Whiterun is probably the best. It's got the smelter, the forge, retailers and your house all within overburdened waddling distance.

The Steed stone is good, and you know you can make your companion carry a bunch of shit too, right?

True, but I would only risk that if I had to in a buggy game. I know I lost shit in fallout that way.

Thanks for the info - I will be searching out the seed stone tonight.

Misti - i had to disable auto saving on my PS3 because it kept locking up so much. I now manually save so fucking often it takes me so long to dumpster dive (dungeon search).

It should be noted that if you do this, your bookshelf will break and you will be unable to do it again if you have Update 1.2.11.0. However if you use the bookshelves in the Arcanaeum, you can still do this. The bookshelves work like chests, so just store it in there, back out of your menus and then reopen the bookshelf and take it. Follow all other steps the same way.

I'm too fucking OCD to play this game, every single glitch that leaves an item in my inventory or a quest that won't register as completed feels like I knife in the heart. I suppose that's a great enough argument for the PC version where I could just pop up a command console and make all my issues go away.

I'm too non-OCD to play this game. I have no idea where the disc is.

Finally purchased it Saturday (for $30!), haven't played it yet. I begin tonight, I think.

Anything I should know the first time around, without being spoilery?

Yep - PS3 freezes a lot.

First thing to do is go into the game settings and disable the AUTO save function. It is set for about 4 or 5 different ways to auto save. By disabling it I have not had any freezing issues to date BUT you will have to save manually often. I forgot this so many times after spending lots of time doing quests only to die and have to go back to last save.

But it beats the shit out of freezing up in the middle of a quest - if you get in the habit of saving often.......
