My 360 is broke, it's not the rings, it's just a black screen with verticle lines kinda thing. You can hear it working fine but see nothing. It's not the AV cable because I switched that and it didn't help. It went out about 12 hours after I put a years worth of xbox live on my account, lovely. I only use it for netflix these days so it's not the disc reader. It's about 4 years old. Any idea where I can get it fixed, or what to try?

Unplug everything, even from the wall, plug it back in again and see what happens. You may not get the red rings yet, but there are a few things that happen, like what you're describing, leading up to the dreaded rings. Mine has taken a shit too and refuses to work. I don't have red rings, but that thing is fucked and if I'm going to spend any money its going towards a brand new console.
What you can do, If you can get it to turn on even for just a little while is buy a data stick/flash drive/thumb drive.....whatever you call them. There is a specific amount of memory the data stick can't be over, I think there is an 8gb max if its going to work on your xbox. Plug the data stick in, turn on the console, and transfer all your info to the data stick. when you get your new console, you can upload everything to the new hard drive.

When I had the RRoD the hard drive wasn't the issue at all and Xbox told me not to send it in with the console. After they sent me back my 360 I put the hard drive back on it everything was back to normal.

I think I only mentioned it because I'm having the same issue with mine, where its not the red rings and I don't plan on sending it for repairs. I don't think the old hard drives are compatible with the new consoles, but you can transfer all the info with the thumb drives if getting a new one is the option you're going with.
