View Full Version : Strong Vocals and Harmonies That Move You

Being a music lover and singer/songwriter - I really enjoy songs that have strong lead vocals. Im not talking about loud screaming type singing but those songs that move you by the strong lead and harmony. Of course I lean towards country or southern rock songs but I would like to hear what songs totally move you.
No haters please - just a thread for good positive experiences

Here's a few:

On of my favorite lines - "i'm with your ghost again" How many times how I have been lost in a memory of a love long ago or I cant be with the one I love right now....

<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/zPG1n1B0Ydw" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Love this chicks strong voice....

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/7NJqUN9TClM" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Even though they have wore this song out - I am so impressed with her voice and the songwriting. They are a local band as well....

For harmonies, these guys tie into not only each other's voices, but the music. It's pretty amazing to say the least, and live a whole other experience. The back and forth they seem to master is also a great technique I love in music when done right.

As far as pure vocals, not sure ANYONE can touch this guy or this cover to be honest. So smooth, pure almost surreal in it's otherworldly quality. Missing out on his work is not a good thing for those who value an amazing voice with range and power. His original stuff is quite good too, and still not dated in my mind. Fucking Tim only dreamed of such a voice. If only he found a way out of that river.

SNACKS! You've picked the be all, end all track! I was gonna post it, but you beat me to it. The Dixie Chicks version of "Landslide" features a vocal harmony from 3:30 to about 3:35 that is considered (in the recording/studio/production industry) by many to be sonically perfect. Pre-autotune!!! It's stunning vocal work there.... and of course... it's perfectly mixed.

CountryBob.... my 2nd choice for pure country harmony power is Little Big Town's homage to Fleetwood Mac. The song is called "Bones". This is another example of how clever and thoughtful production can really elevate a track. During the verses, elaborate 4 part harmonies are being perfectly performed, therefore... there's no snare drum during the verses. This is so the vocals will have that much less competition for your ear in the mid-frequency band of the EQ. They reserve that snare drum in the verse for the solo'd male lead vocal (the "Lindsey Buckingham part") later in the song, for more impact.

I'm always amazed when people praise The Beach Boys for their "amazing" and "strong" vocals. That falsetto just sounds soooo weak to me.
There was a looooong time where that Mickey Mousey falsetto was being overused. I hated it when the BeeGee's did it. And I hate it in Doo Wop. And I hated it when The Beach Boys did it... and they did it more than anybody. That relentless squeaky balls-less falsetto is, for me, a total turn off.
Strangely... that kind of singing -which was popular for about three straight decades- is all but gone now. It's almost as if the whole world (including the vocalists themselves) realized "hey... this style of singing sounds kinda dumb."

Its weird that as a mostly heavy metal/thrash listener as a teenager, then classic rock mostly... later in life I really found that I am a HUGE sucker for a beautiful female voice:

All three girls (Sia Furler, Tina Dico, Sophie Barker) that collaborate with Zero 7 are just insanely good:

I'm a guy who doesn't often get into lyrics. Once I started getting into The National I immediately started picking up on their lyrics due in no small part to Matt Berninger's awesome bassitone voice. This is one of their many great songs. The chorus cuts right through me like nothing else.

This is "Some Nights" by a newer band called FUN.

It's obviously an homage to 80ies era Paul Simon... but... it's also very modern.
I'm a big fan of when a singer dubs his own harmonies. This is a great example of that.
