ATLANTA (AP) - Two Georgia high school football players have died, one of them after he collapsed while leaving the field after practice.

The Henry County schools superintendent's office confirmed Wednesday that 16-year-old Forrest Jones, a student at Locust Grove High School, died Tuesday night at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.

Jones had been hospitalized since Monday when he collapsed while leaving the field. His father, Glenn Jones, says doctors told him the collapse was heat-related.

In Lake City, Fla. a Georgia teen attending football camp died following practice Tuesday morning.

Columbia County authorities say 16-year-old Don'terio J. Searcy of Fitzgerald High School was found unresponsive in his cabin. He was transported to a hospital, where attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.

I hate seeing this - seems every year a few kids die trying to make the football team. I remember those 90+ degree days where my head was spinning and I'd throw up almost daily - due to the torture.

terrible and sad all around. I remember doing 2 a days in the summer and no one ever died. What has happened that these deaths seem to happen every year? Bad coaching or is it really that much hotter/global warming? Maybe its because kids arent used to being out in the sun because they are always inside on computers or playing video games? It really seems strange that this has become such a problem the past 10 years or so.

georgia has been having a string of 100+ degree days lately. they are currently in a heat advisory. i would think that you would move practice indoors or cancel on days such as those.

yeah, thats why you have practices at 8 am for an hour or 2 and then night practices at 7 for an hour or til it gets dark.

Same thing that caused the sudden jump in child abductions.

I live right on the TN/Georgia state line and we have had August-like weather for more than a month. The past few days have been exceptionally hot though and it is sure to get worse as the month progresses.

Most of the schools around here have put off football practice. Even if they hold it later in the day it's still hot. It was 80 and humid at midnight last night when I took my dogs out.

Remember my football coach was such an ass - he would make us practice in the middle of the day and threaten to kick you off the team if you didnt practice when it was super hot. He would say that he didnt want anyone that was soft and couldnt handle it. So, we about died just to make his precious team. We won state 1 year though...

Maybe coaches attitudes towards the players and heat might come into play as well.

HS Football Coaches are some of the most egotistical crazy egomaniacs (yes I said ego twice) ... they are usually guys who barely made the team in HS and are now trying to live out their fantasies through kids.

(Wrestling coaches aren't far behind).
