I was discussing this with my BIL last night.

I looked at a few domestic beers, non-microbrews, and none of them mention the alcohol content. On the flipside most microbrews do say how much alcohol they have.

I know years back one of the Millers, Miller Ice maybe, had a black diaomond on the label that used to say something like " 5% alcohol " and then when I'd see that in ads/billboards, the number was removed.

Quick Google search on my phone gave me nothing so I figured I'd turn here were I get the answers to many questions.

I guess it's a state thing

The ATF also allows a statement of alcohol content unless it's prohibited by state law. This rule was promulgated after the Coors Brewing Company won a landmark Supreme Court case in 1995, which held that disclosure of alcohol content on beer containers is protected commercial speech. The decision overturned a law passed shortly after the repeal of Prohibition that banned alcohol content disclosure on containers except in states requiring such disclosure.

I was thinking along those lines but I woner if it's the state of sale or the state of brewing.

Like none of the large domestics list the content in NY or CT but you can see them on Sam Adams and the like in both states.

Some states require it if it's over 5.0
