Thoughts.
No chance that a guy is going to win this, I think there will be one token guy in the final three along with Orchid, who is basically a less hateable version of Soul to Seoul, and the squinty asian Rachel Ray that nailed her promo in one take after Lurch couldn't remember he was holding a fish. I'm leaning towards asian Rachel Ray because she was actually good and natural, plus her concept is local farmers market style which is probably the most food trend relevant right now. Ofcourse asian BBQ fusion is also pretty formidable trend wise.
I guess the big fight will be Penny vs. Alicia just because Penny is a cougar that I wouldn't touch with yours and Alicia is legit pretty but talks like she hasn't spit out her mouth piece yet. Neither has a chance at winning. Penny's concept is actualy basically Bitchen' Kitchen, a show Food Network already owns, right down to the shot of 6 inch heals in every episode.
I hate that everyone wants to sexy up my food. I dont need my food sexied up at all, it's just as sexy as I want it right now. Please keep your sex away from what I'm about to eat.
Seriously, when's the last time anyone said "I might be getting laid tonight, better eat a big dinner." You skip meals to have better sex you dried up leather cooch.

I think it has to do with the pedestrian nature of the food that is usually cooked on those shows. When you are telling people how to assemble a green salad, you've already ruled out any human being over the age of 5 that has anything over a sub-mongoloid intellect. So you need to "Bam!" it up and add extraneous baubles to keep them watching the commercials for hot pockets.

I actually didn't watch the first episode because Liz warned me how enraged I became watching it last season.
My rage only continues every time I see Tom Pizzica on my TV. He's basically a third-rate Adam Richman, only trying too hard and way more annoying.

I had to turn on my DirecTV captioning to figure out what the hell that Alicia chick was saying.
At one point, according to the caption, she was trying to say the word "correct"... but without reading it, there was no f'ing way I would have ever figured that out.

Well, that's it for Alicia. Maybe it's too early, or maybe the performances were just so bad, but you didn't hear a lot of harping on Points of View which were really poorly represented. This was also one of those challenges that sortof has nothing to do with actually producing a show at the end, I have a feeling a lot of the current FN personalities would have trouble multiplying a recipe for 150 people.
Penny wont have Alicia to kick around anymore, and it looks like next week she's picking up with the food blogger chick. You really cant be a villian on this show, since success is predicated on people liking you once it's all over.
And as a side I find calling Nutella 'chocolate hazlenut spread' one of the most distracting things on TV, and it always happens.

Lurch may be one of the most clueless people ever on this show. Sure, he may be able to cook, but his personality sucked and I still contend that for this show it's way more about the on screen presence and less about if you can actually cook.
Oh, and Susie needs to keep her makeup on at all times. She is gorgeous with it on, but as soon as it comes off she looks like Death warmed over with those huge bags under her eyes.

Yeah I think you're right. The challenges push culinary skills when this is more of a personality competition. It isn't really fair that you're putting the contestents in a place where they cant choose exactly what they want to cook, where they cant push their POV, and then judge them heavily on their food.
But Lurch really never had a shot and he was unlucky enough to get thrown in with some people they think can actually develop.
Penny is equally clueless and it was nice to see how they edited all of the stuff she critisized Maryanne for up against all the praise Maryanne was getting.
Melisse D'Arabian still sucks hard.

Exactly. It isn't like Guy, or Giada, or any of these other network stars are out running around a limited supermarket 1 hour before taping and then expected to make due with what they have. Then again, this is the same network that thinks it's viewers are so dumb that we believe the chefs on ICA don't know the secret ingredient beforehand.
Melisse D'Arabian still sucks hard.
Probably the perfect example that this is all about personality and way less about cooking skill. Jeffrey Saad, the runner-up in that season, could probably cook circles around Melissa, but she was way more personable and thus won the competition.

The camera challenges with no teleprompter pisses me off. ANY show has a teleprompter with at the very least some notes on it so they can engage the audience. Throwing people do to on-screen shit with no teleprompter just is begging for flame out TV.

Oh boy, I know RMHL can't wait for next weeks show... Hipster Tyler Florence and food trucks!!
That said, it was right Justin went home this week - I think if Penny doesn't go home next week, she has to go home the week after - they KNOW they can't give her a show with how badly she's performed on this show. Any longer than that and it's just a grab for ratings.
I think the favorites right now is Vic (Jersey Shore is big), Jeff (surprisingly growing on me), Susie (but Food Net already HAS a Mexican show!) and Mary Beth (because she's more engaging than D'Arabian ever was)
I had my "through the looking glass moment" tonight.
After Justin admitted he was a private person, I tweeted (to no one in particular, just with a #star hash) "THEN WHY THE FUCK ARE YOU ON THIS SHOW YOU HIPSTER ASSHOLE?"

I'm looking forward to the big catfight next week. I was a little taken aback when the whole Penny strife bubbled up and the judges took Penny's side.
I agree that Jeff has grown on my and I'm surprised by that. I think Susie and Whitney are still pretty strong for the end.
They really needed to get Justin out of there, it was getting into mental abuse. Although I dont think they ever really gave him any solid advice, the show needs a mentor system.

That episode was really frustrating.
Giving someone 2 hours to cook a brisket?
You're dooming them to fail. Not fair at all.
Electric grills? Seriously?
And then "this should have been grilled better"? Bobby Flay knows better.
I imagine Mary Beth's "Well, these electric grills were shit." defense was edited out...
And MGD 64? They couldn't possibly have paid enough for that placement.
Totally embarassing. Would you go to your gourmet restaurant and serve/cook with Riunite for wine? Then why serve that shit beer with your potential stars' "gourmet" foods?!
They weren't fair to Justin, either. They told him every week, give us personality, give us more energy. He had Guy Fieri telling him "more, more, more." The rest of the judges all WATCHED Fieri say it!! And then they act like this came out of nowhere? They can't be that dumb. Maybe it wasn't the right fit for him, but don't pretend like you didn't push him there.

You're right about the equipment and it actually happens a lot, you basically have limitations imposed on you by the show who then criticizes you like it was your decision.
And the POV thing happens all the time too, they make them change and then criticize them for not having confidence. In the first week they told Alicia 'you talk like a retard and we cant understand a word you're saying' and then they wonder why she was always so shaken up in camera challenges.
The one thing though is that Orchid didn't have to stick with brisket, she just had to approximate brisket, she could've used a faster cooking meat.

It's another challenge that doesn't make a ton of sense, what were they getting judged on exactly? A few of the commercials were absolutely terrible but that only got mentioned in passing. Their ability to cook off of a food truck was the bigger sticking point but how does that relate to then having a to-camera cooking show?
I'm surprised though, I thought Orchid would be sticking around but they soured on her pretty quickly. I was guessing Marybeth would go. I wonder at what point they will say to Penny and whomever Penny is fighting with (although at that point they should realize what the common denominator is) that they cant win if they're not sympathetic and likable, no matter how the product turns out.
I was also picking Whitney, so my picks have turned to shit. Although she could still claw out of it if she gets a good personality. It's hilariously bad advice though "We feel like you take our advice too much, you should do less of what we say and more of what you want." They're fucking with these people.

Chris, like Penny, is one I can't see ever winning or getting a show. Who is going to watch something from a person that is portrayed as a villian or an immature idiot?
Anyway, I got a question. Is there some sort of significance to the number 150? It seems like every time they have a challenge where they have to cook for a lot of people, it's always 150 of them.

As a guess, it's probably what the food budget and how much it costs to bring in extras/volunteers. Also enough cooking time to build up drama and a bigger chance something gets fucked up.
I know it was 150 in the July 4th and Food Truck challenge. Was the Cougartown deal 150? I can't see 150 people working on a show. It doesn't look like it's 150 next week, looks like just a small dinner.

Couple of things:
I think the right people were in the bottom 4 this week, and any of them should have and could have gone home.
I still think Vic, Suzie, Jeff are top 3, but I'm not sure of the fourth. Could be Mary Beth, could be Whitney.
I think, if I'm put to the test, it would be the following eliminated:
Jyll
Mary Beth
Whitney
Jeff
Leaving it between Vic and Suzie.
I know it would never happen, but instead of the Iron Chef challenge they do with the final four, I would LOVE LOVE LOVE if they did a Chopped Challenge instead. Person who wins is safe for the week, other three are judged.
It would never happen because of how complicated Chopped is, but still.
The thing about chopped is, there's no performance aspect; it's straight food. When they do the Iron Chef with the final four, there's a performance aspect.

Chris on the other hand, this was a long time coming.
As for who has a shot now, I think it's between Suzie, Vic and Whitney. I don't think Jeff, Jyll or Mary Beth have a shot at this point. Personally, I'd give either Suzie or Whitney the win because Vic is almost a shoo-in for a show at this point, even if he loses.

We can only hope now that Jyll goes on some radio show or does an interview where she lets everyone know the real reason why the judges absolutely hated her. I didn't find her any less authentic than Vic (I'm ahhhh mammmma's boyyyy) or Rachel Rae or Guy Fieri, and I know I've heard her mention comfort food with a twist before because who hasn't mentioned comfort food with a twist. They just saw something in her that erked them.
I think Susie is a lock for the final. I prefer Whitney but I think they'll go with Marybeth. I'm not sure if Vic or headband makes it. Tushman loves rough trade and they already have several failed "funny" chefs, but I think headband has done a little better than Vic in actual camera challenges and is probable more versatile. Sandwich in a Meal sounds like a fake show they would use on Throwdown, though. I guess it could be a travelog style show where he doesn't have to cook.
Also, how great woudl it be if Gilbert leans over and the first thing he says is "Noone bring up the tsunami."

Remember, the final is three people, not two. But how can you think Marybeth makes it when she's been bottom the last few weeks, and no one has been liking her food?
I think Susie's biggest hindrance is that food net has already has a Mexican show. But they don't have a straight up Italian show since Batali left.
Here's my thing: Headband and Vic are actually legitimately funny and more camera friendly than Tom Pizzica. Can we launch Tom into outer space like Poochie?

You're one of these snarky tweeters I hear so much about. I'd rock Jyll.
If Vic could deliver a little more he would be a shoe in, theres a chance they invited him or maybe talked to him about doing more on the network after his challenge appearances. I think Vic is a chosen man which kept him in the first few weeks.
Marybeth is just a hunch for me, I dont think Whitney has shown enough and she balks at always being 'good time' whitney. If Whitney could be the does a little dance whitney they showed while she was prepping her food it would work. But I dont get a strong POV for her and I do from Marybeth. It will still take a good showing from MB and a balk from Whitney, but my gut says that will happen.
My final 3 are Susie, Vic, Marybeth. Susie wins, Vic definately gets a deal.

Seeing what a huge personality he has and the fact that he seems so at ease every time you see him, did he have problems in his season like some of these other contestants constantly do or was he a natural from start to finish?

I've never seen it, but I'm guessing yes, because that's how these shows are edited. No one ever has a easy time sailing through reality shows.

I think Whitney is eliminated because the editing showed Suzie hugging someone crying, and that was Whitney. We'll see.

OK, I was right. So:
I am surprised but not shocked that Whitney got axed. She and Mary Beth have the same issue - they are vacant. Not a lot going on behind the eyes. Together, with Mary Beth's knowledge and Whitney's skills and looks, they could have something, but there's no personality.
The previews showed Vic freezing AGAIN but the previews from last week had them saying "Vic Vegas is dead" and that was just talking about the gimmick, not what was going on in the actual show.
So next week is the annual Iron Chef extravaganza, where Penny is a sous chef for Mary Beth. If the sous chefs aren't picked randomly or by another competitor, it makes me think the producers are just fucking with her and they want her out.
So my thoughts are this:
Unless Vic fucks up tremendously (like Whitney did tonight with crying), Mary Beth is done next week.
Dude!
07-31-2011, 08:12 PM
I'll put it this way.... I think Vic or Jeff wins, and the other gets a deal. Susie or Whitney come in 4th or 2nd. Marybeth is eliminated next week.

*shrug* - I didn't realize how tremendously Whitney was going to fuck up tonight.
But thats the idiotic thing, Whitney cried and it was a terrible thing to do and sunk her with the judges, the other week they were talking about how they wish Jyll had cried when Wolfgang Puck took a shit on her rissotto.
Then Vic Vegas splits his POV and straight up changes his character while presenting and they're all relieved, Vic Vegas is dead, but again Jyll did it and it was the nail in her coffin. I guess Vic Mo will have some egg on his face walking around with Vic Vegas tattood on his forearms like a gorilla. All that body modification and he never thought to cut that dingle berry off his lip?
I dont think that letting everyone watch the Best Thing... segments was a great idea, I think they should've had to come into those blind and then you dont have to worry about repeating someone else, or build off of everyone elses criticism. Mary Beth biting off the tip of the crepe made me want to power vomit, too.
Even though I picked MaryBeth next week is going to be harsh for her, Vic is my dark horse to be eliminated but it's hard to imagine it not being Mary Beth. I'm just surprised how high they got on Jeff.
I wonder what kind of jokes were going on during the roast? It was a really unfunny cut, but it would be nice to imagine they were really harsh and dirty. I also wonder what they chopped out of Vic's explination for what his last name is, there's a definite edit there when they asked him "What's on your birth certificate" before he arrives at Vic Mo. Aubrey Plaza is also the 'we need someone to roll her eyes' girl du jour.

Wow, I blew that Whitney prediction as well. I really thought she was getting better and had a shot when I said this.
On the other hand, Jeff has really become the front runner, or at least tied with Susie as the front runner at this point. I honestly wasn't impressed with him and felt he didn't bring much to the table, but over the past 2-3 weeks he has really shined. Next week could be a make it or break it for him. Will he try to make all sandwiches on Iron Chef or does he actually have the ability to do something else? If it's all sandwiches or sandwich-like, then he's a one trick pony.
So next week is the annual Iron Chef extravaganza, where Penny is a sous chef for Mary Beth. If the sous chefs aren't picked randomly or by another competitor, it makes me think the producers are just fucking with her and they want her out.
Fully agree on it being set up solely for the drama and that's a shame. Not that I want Mary Beth to win, but come on. I wonder who will be given Chris to fuck up their meals?

With the Final Four being Susie, Vic, Marybeth, and Jeff, here's what I think could happen:
From the looks of the Iron Chef competition, it looks like they have all four competitors cooking at the same time. Not sure if that's what happening. The previous format was head to head with the other two doing the floor reports.
It bears repeating: I don't think Suzie can win because Food Network already has a Mexican cooking the show, the hostess of the Mexican cooking show is much, much cuter than Suzie, and she was JUST ON as a judge of Extreme Chef last night.
I don't know if it's possible for Jeff, Suzie, and Vic to ALL get shows, but if that DID happen, I could see Suzie on the cooking channel.
I think it could swing like this:
1) Jeff doesn't win but gets a travelogue show with sandwiches across the country. Kind of like Diners Drive Ins and Dives but focusing on sandwiches. Conversely, they could do a shot where Jeff travels and then the second half of the show is Jeff showing how to make the sandwich in the kitchen.
2) Vic wins and gets Mama's Boy. Food Net does not have a straight up Italian show since Batali left, and he's got the personality that can really carry an Italian show in a Jersey Shore type manner.
3) Suzie doesn't win but gets an Elegant Mexican show, kind of like Bayless with boobs on Cooking Channel.
It's just going by the needs of what Food Net needs and doesn't need. And right now, they need a new Italian show.

So, it wasn't a huge shocker that Marybeth was eliminated. I think they just played it up. Only because her food sucked and her commentary was horrible.
They are doing something surprising for the finale - double elimination. It probably explains why the finale is not 2 hours and they are doing a reunion special, but I'm surprised they are doing the reunion BEFORE the finale.
I'm holding to my thought process: Unless there's a massive fuckup, Vic wins, Jeff gets a show.

No way, I think Vic gets eliminated first. I still think Susie wins although it's going to be tight, they just love Jeff so much. I dont get it. Vic is just too awkward though, he's too muscly and his tattoos are too pervasive and out of style. If they could've dropped Vic's personality in someone who is a little more subdued like Justin he could make it, but Vic is embarassingly done up to the point of being hard to watch. Vic is distracting.
I'm surprised at how much less crying this has been this season compared to the last two. Seoul to Soul cried every elimination.
Did you notice Marybeth had a prepared statement and they just cut it out? She had cards in her hands when she was saying her goodbyes. But that was the least tension filled elimination ever. By having the winner of each Iron Chef round get immunity they kindof shot themselves in the foot, because Jeff obviously wasn't going home. Vic vs Marybeth I'm really not sure, although ultimately making three lamb chops and having your seasons be fall, winter and late winter really is a dick move. Their challenge was kindof hamstringed though, lobster is such a better secret ingredient.
And Penny, what a bitch.

Jeff made a huge mistake picking Susie to go against and he knew it from his comments. He definitely should have chosen Mary Beth. At least the sous chef thing wasn't manufactured and it was luck of the draw. When Susie got Chris though, I thought she might be in trouble because he couldn't do anything right in the kitchen and I figured he'd hold her back.
As for that reunion thing, I didn't get that from the preview. To me it sounded like they were brought in as a focus group and they would be judging the final 3, or 2 depending on what point in the show that is.
I have to agree, announcing the winner of each battle gave away who was gone because there was no way Jeff was getting cut. While Mary Beth messed up both the commentary and the food and Vic's food was much better, we've seen more head scratching eliminations (Penny over Jyll in a week where Jyll totally shit the bed).
My gut wants to say that this is Susie's to lose, but like Tenbats has said they already have a Mexican show so that would make no sense to have her win. So, I've got Vic going in the first elimination and then Jeff beats Susie in the final.

And Penny, what a bitch.
I'll be totally honest. Although it looked like Penny was working slow to fuck with Marybeth, there's been evidence before that she's not the fastest worker in the world, ESPECIALLY when she's doing prep work. (Food Truck episode)
I think it was a combination of Penny being a slow-ass chef and Marybeth not having her shit together.

No, there's a reunion show at 8PM, then the finale at 9, where they are brought in as the focus group, and then Food Truck Race at 10.
I think it's stupid to have the reunion before you announce the winner. All of the reality shows that have reunions - specifically, the Bachelor and Survivor - have it AFTER the winner is announcer.
And I don't understand at all why you'd have a focus group with everyone who lost. When they did it last year it was just a bunch of people who had no idea who the finalists were. Having the finalists involved means there's bias, grudges, and vendettas.

I have to imagine the whole focus group thing is to just have some good commentary, ultimately the judges are making the decision, they just want some drama and someone to say "You know what, she's really showing me something here..."

Wow, watching the reunion. I totally didn't catch that Mary Beth freaked when Jeff went to hug her.
Although I can see her being upset and not wanting to deal with Jeff, I'm wondering if re-hashing that on the reunion was a made-for-TV moment. Why the fuck WOULD she want to hug Jeff, SHE JUST LOST TO HIM.
I don't blame her, and Mary Beth was being totally real, but she's got this weird false facade of being a secret bitch.
At least Penny was up front about it.

That was a good call, actually as I was watching Jeff last night I realized he kindof reminds me a little of Tyler Florence, so this would be somewhat like a Tyler's Ultimate, just a sandwich every time. Although it isn't really fair that they have to pitch to-camera shows even though the ultimate concept might not be that.
They managed to get some shots of Susie last night where she just looked haggard.
Overall a good season.

Was that the premise in that preview they showed? I saw the commercial and the time while FF through, but didn't stop to watch and listen.
As for the reunion and finale. We watched about half of the reunion before we punched out. It just got annoying after a while and wasn't worth it.
I too was surprised by Mary Beth's attitude. Aside from Penny, she didn't act like anyone else bothered her in the house. Then they make it sound like she had a beef with Jeff the whole time. Where the fuck did that come from?
Even though I didn't see the whole segment, I did catch Chris talking shit to Justin B in a preview about who's food is better and a Throwdown was issued. Is that clown kidding? Chris' food sucked through every challenge while Justin B's was the only reason he lasted as long as he did. That would be a massacre Throwdown.
Now, Jeff did some pretty good impressions, but what the fuck was that from Justin D? In what world did that sound like Bobby Flay? I thought he was doing some Italian mobster with that accent.
As for the finale, I would have been fine with either winning. As someone who loves sandwiches though, I would be more apt to watch a show from Jeff than one from Susie, even though I'd like to come up behind her in the kitchen like her father did to her mother except there wouldn't be dancing involved.

From Alton Brown on facebook:
The concept for Food Network Star this year is that Giada, Bobby and I have selected teams of 5 and we're mentoring them through the competition in hopes of having 1 left at the end. Then America will decide who the next Food Network Star is. If 1 of my people win, I'll produce their new show.
Thank Christ. Considering you've cancelled every single "star" show, it's about fucking time you listen to America and not the Food Net suits.

Watching the finale last night it seemed like none of the finalists aside from Marty particularly wanted to win. Justin looked horribly uncomfortable when he realized he'd actually have to make a TV show.
The shittiest thing they did this season was with Retro Rad. It's implied pretty heavily that her affinity for the 50s thing comes out of some kind of trauma that she wasn't willing to share. They wanted her to pull a Melissa d'arabian "Melissa, you dont show enough emotion." "Oh yeah, this enchilada casserole reminds me of how my mother fucking killed herself, happy now?" SO when girly didn't talk about how she likes updating meatloaf recipes because her father used to maritally rape her mother they booted her ass.
Keeping the numbers between the teams even only works when the talent is balanced. There was so much dead weight that just stuck around because it wasn't that teams turn on the bottom that week. Ippy? Girl on Grill? Martita? Are you fucking kidding?
