NOAA hurricane outlook indicates an above-normal Atlantic season (http://www.globalsurfnews.com/news.asp?Id_news=51856)

Across the entire Atlantic Basin for the six-month season, which begins June 1, NOAA is predicting the following ranges this year:

12 to 18 named storms (winds of 39 mph or higher), of which:
6 to 10 could become hurricanes (winds of 74 mph or higher), including:
3 to 6 major hurricanes (Category 3, 4 or 5; winds of 111 mph or higher)

Each of these ranges has a 70 percent likelihood, and indicate that activity will exceed the seasonal average of 11 named storms, six hurricanes and two major hurricanes.

“The United States was fortunate last year. Winds steered most of the season’s tropical storms and all hurricanes away from our coastlines,” said Jane Lubchenco, Ph.D., under secretary of commerce for oceans and atmosphere and NOAA administrator. “However we can’t count on luck to get us through this season. We need to be prepared, especially with this above-normal outlook.”

Come on Irene.

Emergency officials from Florida to the Carolinas were closely watching Irene Tuesday as the first hurricane to seriously threaten the U.S. in three years churned over energizing tropical waters. The storm has already cut a destructive path through the Caribbean.

Forecasters say the hurricane could grow to a monstrous Category 4 storm with winds of more than 131 mph before it's predicted to come ashore this weekend on the U.S. mainland. The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami expected Irene to reach Category 3 strength on Tuesday, said spokesman Dennis Feltgen.

Officials could begin issuing watches for parts of the U.S. mainland later in the day. Because the storm is so large, Florida could begin feeling some effects from the storm late Wednesday.

Current government models have the storm's outer bands sweeping Florida late this week before it takes aim at the Carolinas this weekend, though forecasters caution that predictions made days in advance can be off by hundreds of miles. Georgia is also likely to be affected.

The last hurricane to make landfall in the U.S. was Ike, which pounded Texas in 2008.

If it stays on track I'm actually gonna bail for that reason (was thinking maybe either that or at least send off the Wife and baby with the car, the dog, the shotty and I will guard the abode ;-). We have a garage spot but that means dick if it winds up flooding. We actually just increased our homeowners insurance cause of the new addition so that is at least some relief!

Yeah its mandatory, the bank makes us carry cause we live in a flood zone (it's such a scam cause we live on the fourth story, if it ever flooded up there it would mean Manhattan was under water and the world as we know it was ending). The building management co. has a separate flood insurance policy for all the common areas i.e. the garage.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg issued a mandatory evacuation order for low-lying areas, including Battery Park City and Coney Island, as local trains, buses and subways in the tri-state area prepared to shut tomorrow in advance of Hurricane Irene’s approach.

All New Jersey rail service will be suspended from noon tomorrow, Governor Chris Christie said at a press conference today. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said the Metropolitan Transit Authority will institute a system-wide shutdown of trains and buses starting at about noon local time. The suspension will include subways, buses, the Long Island Rail Road, Metro-North Railroad and Access-A-Ride.

I went to the grocery store yesterday to do my usual Friday shopping. What a fucking mistake! I guess these people are planning to be stuck in their houses for at least a week. Despite the crazy crowds, the store still seemed to be reasonably well stocked except for the bakery and donut section which was cleaned out.

So, in the event of a breakdown in social order and supply lines - be sure you are well stocked with bear claws and Boston Creams.

These news reports are full of shit.

A local news reporter from Washington, D.C. ended up getting covered in what is probably the remnants of raw sewage as he delivered live hurricane reports from Ocean City, Md.

WTTG-TV reporter Tucker Barnes was providing live updates for stations around the country as a wall of what he described as sea foam poured over him.

Barnes was on the boardwalk as Hurricane Irene hit the coast of Maryland

He noted that he had immersed himself in organic material. That "organic material" was most likely the effects of raw sewage pouring into the water during the storm.

"It doesn't taste great," he said.

He said it had a sandy consistency and added, "I can tell you first-hand, it doesn't smell great."

The foam is often a toxic mix of pollution and cyanobacteria

For real. When I go I stay further north at the start of the boardwalk, the beach isnt nearly as wide there.

Also, this was 2 hours later on New Jersey Ave. (About 6 blocks from the boardwalk)

And they are expected to get another 12-15 inches of rain tomorrow. Unreal.

3 things:

Katia is a sexy name whether for a hurricane or some chick walking down the street.

2: I'm getting some flooding in my basement, but it's not close to an inch yet and there's not much I can do at the moment.

3: I don't know if this makes any sense, but I went outside a few minutes ago to see how it was and with the rain and wind I got the scent of the ocean. Is this common for a hurricane? I'm not a costal town, but the ocean/bay is only a good 5 minutes away. It just kind of confused me.

Not really a travel bag, basically a "let's get this shit if we need to get out of here" bag. When the Emergency Broadcast System says "tornado warning" and the town I live in, I'm not exactly going to say "oh, the news is overhyping this shit".

If you think it's dumb because I'm prepared, so be it. But grabbing both financial, recordkeeping, and personal stuff that may not be easily replaced and having it ready to go is not something I'd feel bad about.

yeah, it's not a go bag if you need to get it ready. that's just called packing.

Tenbatsuzen
08-28-2011, 04:40 PM
Well, the original go bag had all the stuff that I thought I would need in case of a fire - mainly stuff that would be a bitch to replace.

But then the word "tornado" entered the picture and that changed things.

Some of the stuff I didn't put in the bag because I figured there would be archives of it off-site from my house. So if there was a localized problem at the house, we'd be OK.

But as I was getting all the stuff ready to go, I realized that a tornado could take out the businesses where I have my stuff archived, so I figured I'd need that as well. That's where the "packing" in four minutes came into play.

So next time, if there's an issue, and there's a warning, the entire family can be out of the house within 5 minutes and on the road.
