View Full Version : What's Your Emergency Plan?

With the talk about the Rapture, etc. and recent topics of Anthony's "Go Bag" on O&A and LFTC, I sat down and had a long talk with Liz about our disaster/emergency preparedness.
The things we talked about were:
Separation of both of us working in different parts of the state
Our daughter's protection
What supplies to have ready to go
A checklist of things to collect in the house if we have to leave the area in a hurry.
Scanning and securing all important paperwork.
Have you had a similar conversation with your spouse/family, and if so, what kind of tips or ideas did you think about?

I don't think I've ever had an emergency plan with my family. Guess we figure well just wing it.

That's a good idea, creating some kind of plan. As I'm on my own, I will be willing to help a woman who has found herself on her own. Maybe needs help collecting gas and water. Maybe she needs a bodyguard to help her walk through the wasteland in search of a legendary sanctuary. She better not have a kid in tow though.
As for right now, I always carry some food and water with me in my daily commute. 9/11 and the 2003 blackout taught me that those little things can come in handy.

We don't really have a plan but when we had kids we did go out and prepare a will. It was especially important to indicate in the will where the kids would go if anything happened to both of us.

I guess it would depend on what we're running from..If it's that Rapture I don't think I'll need MRE's or a wind-up radio where I'm going..

I basically started with nuclear disaster and worked my way down.
Most natural disasters, you have some sort of warning that something's coming. (Tornadoes, hurricanes, etc.) You at least get some lead time to get out of the area. Nuclear/bioterror, there's no warning.
I do carry water, flashlight, and some basic tools in my car, so does Liz.
I think the most important thing is documentation - birth certificates, wedding certificates, deeds, titles, etc and have them together and ready to grab if needed.

Just walk away and there will be an end to the horror. JUST WALK AWAY

In most situations I think i'd stay behind and help who I can..Family and friends would be a priority for me..I'd probably look to take refuge in a semi secure local shelter with the people I love and trust then work from there..If the threat were nukular I would only go as far as necessary..But I do know, within the city where to appropriate fallout gear that would help if I surrive the initial attack, plus I already have guns and ammo..So I got that going for me, which is nice..

When I first moved to Florida I lived in Boca Raton and we got hit hard during Katrina and Wilma. It sucked for a couple of weeks having no power & no clean water and food. The supermarket did open a day or two after so we were able to get some food and bottled water. I should have prepared in advance. Now I live out side of the Orlando area and I'm not that worried about Hurricanes anymore. They say this year is going to be a bad year for Hurricanes, it's been quiet the last few years.

Don't listen to those bullshit projections. I have lived here 40 years and they say the same thing every year. About August, they start revising the estimates down and then again in Sept. & Oct. That way, at the end of hurricane season they say we predicted x major storms (Oct. figure) and there weren't any. They would look like real idiots if they ever showed the actual number of storms compared with the original estimates.

I don't really have any plans. I figure I'll do what I do whenever something bad happens...ignore it and hope it goes away.
Strange pain in my chest?
Ignore it and hope it goes away.
Weird rattle under the hood?
Ignore it and hope it goes away.
Pitch black at noon and tornado siren wailing?
Ignore it and hope it goes away.
It's worked so far.

As a silly question, what portable media is the less likely to degrade over a long-term period - CD-R media, DVD-R media, flash thumb drives, or SD cards?

I would think, as long as you care for them, DVD's have less chance of losing data. But I'd do both DVD and thumb or SD cards just in case.
EDIT: But if you have huge amounts of data, the DVD's would take up a lot of physical space.

Nobody really knows. Flash memory can theoretically keep indefinitely, while the dyes on discs will deteriorate eventually. But in the real world, both media types have myriad avenues for failure.
If I'm putting important shit on a drive/disk and then tossing it into the fire safe, I would probably choose the optical disc.
If you can't lose something, you need redundancy...no two ways about it.

Here's my thought process: We don't know if flash memory is susceptible to EMP. (or do we?) No matter what, I agree with you about redundancy.

Yeah I guess your right, I don't remember what they said about last year and the year before. Either way it's been quiet the last few years so eventually it will be a busy season right?

Their reasoning is the gambler's paradox. It's faulty reasoning.
