I witnessed mob mentallity tonight...

And it was frightening. There's a big festival in town this weekend, and as usual, the place is full of young partiers. I went to a convenience store an hour ago to fill up the tanks and get a smack of pokes. As I was pumping the gas, I hear yelling nearby.

About 20 feet away, about 8-10 black guys (yes, I'm bringing up the races of those involved), beating the shit out of a big white guy and a skinny white chick. It was bad. He was on the ground being kicked and shit. After two security guards somehow got them to stop (on of the guards was about 70), she lay in the middle of the parking lot, not able to get up.

At this point, it was obvious the place would soon be crawling with cops. The guys that did the beating slowly convinced themselves to leave. What happened next shocked the hell out of me. About 10-20 young girls (mostly black, but some white) were standing and driving around the chick lying on the ground. They would go up to her and just yell and scream at her. They knew the cops were coming, but they didn't car.

Adults, (both black and white) just stood there shocked. There wasn't anything anyone could do. These young people just turned into complete animals. I've never witnessed anything like it before. The effect that mob mentality has on young people is truly a frightening thing to see.

I've never been around a situation of this magnitude (I usually am able to leave when I feel the tension building up), but it's something that bothers me.

Back in high school I was never the person who when they saw a fight starting would egg people on. I'm not a fan of confrontation.

I've been to a lot of shows where someone will be a complete dick and the crowd will collectively remove this person from the area. I don't know if I've ever seen it in the street, but I like to imagine that is has happened.

Sounds like a crappy situation all the way around and since since we don't know the exact details (and just the aftermath), 10 on 1 is still pretty damned cowardly. In regards to Good Samaritans stepping in, sometimes the good guys win. Google UFC Fighter Roger Huerta's dispatching of a goon (NFL player at the time) who knocked a girl out from behind outside a Austin, TX night club. In a street fight, you never know who you're up against.
