It's because that article was actually published in November, 1989. Why it's being brought up as news again is puzzling. You have to remember that at the time, Paul's Boutique was considered a flop, and it wasn't until a few years later that people discovered it's a classic.

Right. I believe it was released in late 1989. And yea, I've seen this list before. I wonder why CNN even putting this out.

I don't see how a list from that era could possibly exclude pop-metal.
Pyromania was 2nd only to Thriller that year... and just a few years later, Hysteria went on to sell over 20 million copies.
And then there's Slippery When Wet & New Jersey. Bon Jovi has gone onto be one of thee most successful bands in history of music. (record sales, ticket sales, awards, prestige)

Duran Duran has sold over 60 million records.... and had probably 10 mega hits during that decade. MTV was firing on all cylinders.

The fact that we view these bands as "a joke" now, has no bearing here. These bands are synonomous with that decade. They owned it.

A few years ago they had the top 100 Guitarists of all time and had Eddie Van Halen in like the 80's and I think Kurt Cobain at like 17.

Maybe CNN will post that article as if it was from today ;-)
