This is just fucking embarrassing. I really hope whoevers idea this was dies a slow painful death.

This was sent out to international TV stations as instruction on how to describe the WWE shows.

Here's a look at some of the terms:

* "Wrestling" or "catch" is banned. Some European countries still use the term "catch" to describe pro wrestling and "catchers" to describe wrestlers. "The Language of WWE" states that the following phrases are incorrect: "Wrestling is broadcast in 145 countries," or "Catch is broadcast in 145 countries." The correct terminology is: "WWE is broadcast in 145 countries."

* "Sports" is incorrect. "Entertainment or Action Soap Opera" is allowed. For example, "WWE is exciting entertainment" or "WWE is an exciting action soap opera" is allowed. In the last example, "action soap opera" is printed in bold, presumably to make sure there's no confusion.

* "Catchers" or "wrestlers" are not allowed. Incorrect examples are "Catchers are unique characters" or "Wrestlers are unique characters." The term "WWE Superstars" is allowed.

* "Athletes" or "Sportsmen" are now allowed either. WWE gives the following example to use: "WWE Superstars are entertainers with tremendous athletic prowess."

* The term "fight" is not allowed. Matches must be referred to as "match" or "bout."

* "Fighting" is also not allowed but the term "action" is.

"The Language of WWE" printout concludes with the following "Key Soundbytes":

* WWE is pure entertainment

* WWE is an action soap opera

* WWE Superstars are entertainers with tremendous athletic prowess

I would think that if Vince wanted people to consider his product a serious form of entertainment, the phrase "action soap opera" should be avoided way before "wrestling".

What kills is, this is exactly Vinces reason for not liking Morrison!!!

Former WWE creative team member John Piermarini stated in a blog post earlier this year that Vince McMahon believes John Morrison "can't kick anyone's ass in a real fight" and therefore won't achieve the success many feel he's destined for. That's not the only criticism being levied towards "The Prince of Parkour" as many people within WWE feel he comes off as if he's performing in his matches, as opposed to fighting. This holds him back, as does his relationship with Melina and the belief that his promo ability is subpar.

How is this any more embarrassing than actually still watching wrestling?

This strikes me as very similar to some of the moves that NASCAR has made to try to appeal to a broader audience. Like that effort, it fails to recognize that there's a very sizable portion of the population that will never watch wrestling, and thus trying to hard to get them is not only doomed to failure, it risks making your product less palatable to the people who will.

It is just a shame, to me, that Vince won the Monday night wars against the WCW. No, forget that. It is a shame that, at some point between 1996 and now, every wrestling company other than the WWF/E has adopted the WWF/E's booking philosophy. WCW did it. TNA did it.
