I'm going to be in the market for a new system in a month or two and I'm definitely going with a Dell as A) I have one now and it's been very good to me and B) I trust the quality.

Thing is I am a bit confused on which model, or should I say which processor to go with.
I've narrowed it down to two. The Intel Core i7-960 processor (8MB L2 Cache, 3.20GHz) and the Intel Core i7-2600 processor (8MB Cache, 3.4GHz).

From the research I did, the i7-2600 is the newer model (2nd generation), but when looking at comparisons and reading feedback, people seem to be torn over which is actually better. I'm leaning toward this one as it's newer and to me newer most likely has to be more advanced, but it also has a lower price tag so that has me confused. Being as I'm not as tech savvy as I used to be, I can't make heads or tails out of most of these benchmarks and techie comments comparing the two so I'm a bit confused.

Oh, and I'm sure the first question asked is what I mainly use the system for. Most of it will be regular web usage, but there will also be gaming involved. Not high tech gaming that requires the best and fastest rig, but enough that it will make current games run smoothly without taxing the system too much.

Can anyone offer a layman comparison of the two and which you think is clearly better for a new system?

for what you need it for, both are excellent and probably overkill. you will be fine with either one.

are they both the same chipset? the decision might come down to the motherboard.

A processor isnt the main thing you need to worry about for gaming.

Why not build your own?

I have a Q6600 with an ATI HD 4850 card and it played far cry 2, minecraft lol, and mass effect 2 just fine.

Oh and starcraft 2

I'm not building my own because of this,
Being as I'm not as tech savvy as I used to be

I just know I would screw something up. :glurps:

Anyway, yes, I know that the processor isn't all you need to worry about, but it is a factor. You also need to consider the speed, the RAM, the video card, and the power supply.

That brings me to another dilemma regarding these two Dell models. For both I would definitely be looking at the ATI Radeon HD5670 1GB GDDR5 video card. Thing is the older system (i7-960 processor) has a 525W power supply while the newer system (next gen i7-2600 processor) only has a 460W power supply. That seems like a significant drop in power to me and I'd be afraid that the 460W supply wouldn't be enough to handle the system demands. Once again, I'm just clueless about this stuff. Is the 525W just overkill and the 460W is more than enough, or would I be running into problems with the lower supply?
