No joy in Mudville.
As soon as the Rays came back 7-6, I shut the TV off, went to bed and dreamed of Theo finally getting fired.
Oh, and I hope Lackey's soon-to-be-ex gets every penny of his Sox contract. She earned it more than his sorry ass ever did.

He won't get fired. He'll just leave and take the Cubs job. Hopefully he takes half the team with him.

Chb has been writing those for a week. This still doesn't hurt nearly as bad as '03. Anyone thinking clearly for the last month knew this wasn't a WS team. I'll be getting good nights sleep this fall. Thanks sox. Dump the deadweight, new pitching coach, medical/training staff. Talk of firing Tito or Theo is plain pinkhat retardedness.

Actually, some DID refer to the Curse of the Bambino since it happened in Baltimore near where Ruth was born, where there's a statue and where his father had a bar.

Terry Francona reportedly could be out as Red Sox manager (http://www.boston.com/sports/blogs/thebuzz/2011/09/terry_francona.html)
If he goes then Theo should be right behind him
Exactly. I blame Theo more than I do Tito. He signed these losers.
And if Tito goes, I'd like to see him down here with the Nats.

Firing Francona is just insane.
I know that a manager shouldn't get too much credit when teams win but on the flips side of that they shouldn't take the fall when a team fails to perform up to its expectations.
It'd be one thing if this team had a complete lack of focus all year but that didn't appear to be the case.
They got bad pitching and had bad bounces for the last month of the season. Nobody could've fixed that.
The season wasn't an entire choke job in that they still won 89 games.
If things had been as bad as people are saying they'd have never recovered from that early season swoon and would've finished 30 games out.
Something has to be said for that run they made from May through July.
Teams don't do that if they don't have some desire.
Any moves on Francona or Epstein are knee-jerk and uncalled for in my opinion.
Now if Francona decides to leave on his own, because 8 years of that is too much, then I can't blame him.

I wish people would stop acting like Francona was some great manager and are shocked he's gone. He's the ultimate front office manager. Don't do much, and do whatever Theo tells you to do. When he tried to make his own decisions, they were usually awful, like sticking with his players far too long.

yea awesome. no one even thought he was anything but a bum when they hired him. He just proved they were right. we have to stop giving so much credit to coaches and managers of teams that are that loaded with talent. they dont have fuckin hard jobs.
NO ONE should have ever allowed a team that good to miss the playoffs. I dont care if he won 77 straight WS, he failed to do his job this year. He has to go, and he fuckin knows it, and thats why he just went on his own.

Let's also not act as though managers have NO impact on the game over 162 like Jbeam pretty much did and others have hinted at. Francona shit to bed like many of his players on this collapse. To fall this badly, so many shitty factors have to come together, but a manager has many options just to stir shit up and or find ugly ways to win games. He truly didn't do this, and it seemed he just didn't care as much as in the past. He, like many Sox fans probably knew his team wasn't going anywhere with this rotation and current crop of players. Which to me just shows what's wrong with baseball. So many teams would have killed for the shot at the playoffs, and the sox overall seemed ambivalent overall. TB never plays or acts this way. I'm glad they made the playoffs over Boston. And perhaps they'll go back to being the Red Sox as opposed to being a carbon copy of the Yankee way.
That being said, Francona and Theo did end a HORID streak in Boston amidst the likes of the mega bankrolled yanks. This year surely will leave a mark, but 2 titles in less than a decade is something I'd sign up for any day of the week.
In conclusion, fuck mlb.

exactly the points that need to be made. As much as the players did, francona mailed it in. And if most of these players had options, the sox wouldnt have picked those up either. Unfortunately, they are stuck with these players. But they didnt have to be stuck with Francona.
That said, they both handled it perfectly and its good because he did do alot for the city, and this way, it will never be bitter. He will always be important to sox fans. It all ended up workin out right, i think

Yeah, remember how he stuck with Pedroia after his shitty start during his rookie season in 2007? That was a disaster. He was as much responsible for the development of home-grown guys like Pedroia, Lester and Ellsbury as anybody else.
Look, Tito wasn't perfect. But to succeed dealing with headcases like Manny, and stellar Theo pickups like Renteria (and the 5 other SSs that followed), Clement, Gagne, Dice-K, Drew, Lackey, Jenks, Albers and Bedard to name a few, is nothing short of miraculous. He may have been loyal to a fault but he in the end he lost his clubhouse. It's probably for the best, in terms of his own mental and physical health, that he leave that job.

It's fucking disgusting the way they do this. I didn't even need to see the story that Francona was leaving. When I saw a story leaked earlier that day that pitchers were drinking on their off days in the clubhouse I knew he was gone. But what if that shit is all true. What if he did let guys drink in there? If that story came out simply cause someone caught it, like a reporter, everyone would CRUCIFY Tito. i agree. They are making the point that since that is the case, why do you have to go and make the guy look worse by leaking shit. And i get that. but at the same time, if i had an employee that was doin some shit like that, id have put him on blast too. So i can see both sides.
regardless, the guy lost the team, and failed to do his job. Thanks for the good times.....now get the fuck out. You should have done your fuckin job if you didnt wanna deal with the heat. YOU LOST A 9 GAME LEAD in LESS THAN A MONTH. FUCK OFF
I have to say, after having had some time to read a bunch of different articles about what went wrong this past month, my biggest disappointment has to be with Varitek. In the past, before he was even officially named Captain, he was the one who would get in players' faces or would call team-only meetings to refocus the team when things were going bad. During September, it seemed like Pedroia was the only one doing any of that. Our Captain didn't seem to be doing his job at all. I expected better from him.

That was contrary to previous reports that Warner and Luchinno were the ones pushing Crawford, as he doesn't really fit the Theo prototype player. Amazingly paps comes outta this unscathed. There are so many nutty revelations in the Red Sox's self-serving/self-defeating exercise in blame and vengeance—and the revelations are so thoroughly unexamined by the Boston Globe reporters who wrote them down—you might think it would be hard to pick out the most ridiculous. The attacks on Adrian Gonzalez (.338/.410/.548) and Jacoby Ellsbury (.321/.376/.552) for their inadequate intangibles? The overdetermined tales of year-long slackness and sloppiness from a team that went 20-6 in July? The failure to notice that the whole litany of wrongdoing adds up to less misbehavior than Manny Ramirez used to fit into a single seventh-inning stretch, back in the golden days of Boston Baseball Played Right?

Quote
Carl Crawford kept more and more to himself as the season progressed, largely because the clubhouse culture here was unlike any he'd experienced during his decade with Tampa Bay. A consummate pro, Crawford had once grabbed Pat Burrell and thrown him up against a wall, angrily telling Burrell that his unprofessional ways were not accepted in the Rays' clubhouse. Tampa Bay management had their speedy outfielder's back, trading Burrell a short time later. That's the kind of cache Crawford had in that room, and with that organization.
But in Boston, Crawford apparently felt he couldn't exert his influence because he wasn't one of the veterans who understood what the Sox organization considered acceptable and what had led them to victory. Finally, late in the season but before the team entered its death spiral, Crawford had had enough. He launched into an impassioned speech, imploring teammates to get it together. It fell on deaf ears.
As for the now-infamous "Go ask the captain" line, Crawford had an issue with the reporter who asked the question -- about that person's relationship with Jason Varitek -- and not Varitek himself. What followed, with 'Tek going over and hugging Crawford, was considered as nothing more than a dog-and-pony show, done to put a happy face on an unhappy locker room.
Quote
Crawford wasn't the only newcomer marginalized by the Sox' toxic culture. The other big offseason acquisition, Adrian Gonzalez, was dumbfounded by the lack of professionalism that surrounded him, and couldn't believe it was allowed to continue. And while he struggled with a variety of injuries that sapped him of his power, Gonzalez still showed up, still worked, still competed. The same couldn't be said of some of his new teammates.
Quote
In the days that followed Francona's dismissal, very few Sox players stepped to his defense. Francona was understandably hurt by that, but it wasn't as if he didn't see it coming. Players whom Francona had defended (Varitek), supported through difficult times (David Ortiz) and considered to be almost like a son (Jon Lester) had already tuned him out long before the late collapse.
Their silence was just a reinforcement of how bad the Red Sox clubhouse had gotten and - sources reiterated - how it will remain until those responsible for it are moved out or held accountable for their failings, both on and off the field.
We can bash Crawford's performance on the field, but at least he tried to do something about. Some of these veterans have to go.

the more i read, the more and more i feel bad for Carl Crawford and the less I hate him. I think he didnt really wanna be in boston, but the money was huge, so he was liek fuck it, ill make it work.
Then when he got there, he was just floored by how fuckin stupid it was. I think he never got along with these animals, and it just made it so hard for him. I kinda wish he had stood up to them, but as the new guy, like he said, i can completely understand why he would just be quiet and assume that was just the way it always was there. But man, i never thought he could ever look this good to me after this season he had.

thats the thing. they were idiots, but they were proffessionals. There wasnt a guy on that team of idiots who wasnt in the gym or the cages bustin his ass. They mighta fucked around in how they acted in the clubhouse and dugout, and had fun and been crazy, but they also came to fuckin play. Not a single guy on that team sat around drinking beer and eating chicken during games and gaining 80 fuckin pounds.

Michael Kay, of all people, came up with a great idea today. Instead of the sox allowing theo to go to Chicago and gettin back whatever player in compensation, they should tell the cubs that the compensation is they have to take Lackey and the rest of his deal. deadspin had this little tidbit today about Josh Beckett back in florida.
If the allegations are true, it wasn't the first time Beckett killed time in the clubhouse during a game. He and Brad Penny did that with the Marlins in 2003, prompting manager Jack McKeon to lock the clubhouse door during games.
Jack even resorted to keeping a stack of bathroom passes in the dugout to give out during games when players had to go.
"In between innings they'd go to the clubhouse to get a drink or hang out,'' McKeon recalled this afternoon from his home in North Carolina.
"I said, ‘Hey, I got no rule against going up if you have to go to the bathroom or something, but get back.' A couple of times I looked down the bench to talk to somebody and they weren't there. They were in the clubhouse. So I went up and got them out and said, ‘OK, boys that's it. We'll lock the door.'"
ummm, can we hire this guy tomorrow?

I shouldn't say in spite of him. I just think he had less to do with the team than most people give him credit for. He was the perfect management manager. He did whatever the front office told him to.

I agree. I'm willing to give him a pass on his first year because he went from that wasteland in Tampa to the fishbowl that is Boston.
Just like I said before. I'm really disappointed in Tek.

From Nick Cafardo on Oct. 4
What can the Red Sox do?
- In addition to Epstein, you trade, as some bloggers have suggested, John Lackey and the remainder of his contract to the Cubs. That would give the Cubs a Carlos Zambrano-Lackey tandem. Good luck, Theo.
Just wanted to pop in here as a Cubs fan and thank you guys for Epstein. Although I am sure he has 99% chance to fail, Chicago Cubs is where super star players and/or front office people come to die.

Bobby V??? They're going to treat him like a substitute teacher.
that's hilarious, yet I think Bobby can hold his own with the players and boston
i just thought he'd stay in the NL in the end, not to mention the Cubs may be a void in the MLB, but man to go there and win for once would make anyone a legend. i thought he'd be at least interested in that team, especially since it's been done in Boston of late, and he would have to accomplish much more in a much tougher division to do so
i always liked the madman, especially since I was at the game vs my Jays when he donned the disguise after getting tossed. it was hilarious and he's a good bball mind with a kid's attitude.

but there wasnt one of those. I didnt wanna give that kinda money to CJ Wilson, i dont think he is that good. And even still, you had 50 mil coming off the books. prince got like 25, you still woulda had plenty to sign good pitching.
All of a sudden the sox are penny pinching after liverpool dropped 90 mill in like 3 weeks. Its kinda pissing me off. Who the fuck is even playing RF now? Are we really gonna sign a guy whose best year in the cuban league he hit 252?
its almost like henry and them have decided to ride this crappy team as salary goes down and just count his money. Maybe they feel burned on the Crawford deal, but that shouldnt stop you from making what seem like good deals. If that deal was so expensive it was gonna handcuff them, they shouldnt have done it, even if he had a great year
I know. I was just wishing out loud.
And not any of those fucking Dice-K/Lackey deals that always end up biting us on the ass.

im not giving up on crawford. in fact, alot of things i heard about him and his reaction to the teammates gives me hope on him still. He seems to have too much pride to just mail in the rest of the deal. As for right field, i really think we are gonna sign Pussy Juice, and ill be fuckin PISSED. If we go into the year having not signed a great pitcher, not signed prince fielder, reupped Papi and then we decide to let Darnell Fuckin McDonald play right field, ill lose my fuckin shit. seriously.
and regardless, i made the crawford deal point to eschew it. I dont think any of these deals are biting the sox in the ass. If they had given prince that deal det did, and say signed CJ wilson for 20 a year and given some OF another 10, the payroll would still be at like 170. There is no way, with all the BS and all the 20 dollar red sox nation cards, that anyone can tell me the sox cant afford a payroll over 165 mill. If they couldnt afford that, HOW THE FUCK DID THEY AFFORD TO GIVE ALL THAT MONEY FOR CARROLL AND SUAREZ AND STUPID JORDAN HENDERSON AND ALL THESE OTHER BUMS THEY BOUGHT IN ENGLAND SINCE JULY.
John Henry's a Scouser now.
how do they have $50 million coming off the books ? J.D. Drew is gone thats about $15 million. Dike-K and Lackey are still on the payroll even though they won't be pitching.

they would have had had they not reupped papi. this whole thing was based on letting papi walk. They lost drew, they lost papi. that alone was like 30 mill. then between other dudes they had, and a few international FAs who never cut it, they had about 50 mill scheduled to come off. it didnt cause they kept papi and did alot of minor shit. but they would have
