I've been reading and during the 70s and 80s it appears that like a bunch of popular shows became cartoons including Happy Days and Star Trek and for some reason they all had a dog. Smigel perfectly parodied this with Lost Cartoon flashback with the globetrotters and especially Black Sabbath

Forget about the real people with pet sidekicks for a minute...how some pets that made no f***ing sense. Like jabberjaw, I always hated that damn show. And how does a shark live out of water anyway??
Or how about when some people would play guest on Scooby Doo, they tended to have a pet that made no sense...

There were always real human guest stars on Scooby Doo in the '70's. Some of them were pretty odd choices for a kid's show...
Phyllis Diller, Tim Conway, Jonathan Winters, Don Knotts, the Addams family, Sonny and Cher, Laurel and Hardy, Jerry Reed, Barbara Eden (as Jeannnie), Sandy Duncan, The Harlem Globetrotters, Davy Jones, Don Adams, Mama Cass and Dick Van Dyke.
