The best punk band ever will always be The Clash (to me at least and my opinion on this is better than yours). But who are the best punk bands coming out there these days? There's a whole lot of groups that are definately influenced by Hot Wate Music and others like them, but which are grabbing your attention the most.

I hate The Clash. I've said it enough that I hope one day someone on here will say that "RMHL Matt famously hates The Clash."
This is a tricky question because punk is a macro genre so you've got a really diverse sound in all of the genres included in the punk banner. So does one look at the best band that is just a punk band or the best band that would be under the that banner in it's own niche. I take the latter.
For my money I will take Screaming Females.
I saw two newer bands you might like though, Give and Iron Chic. They both have that Gaslight Anthem thing going.

I am so happy to read this. I only came in here to say "I fucking hate The Clash". They're barely punk.
Best current punk for my money - Charles Albright. See his I'm Happy, I'm A Genius EP.

I hate you a little bit for hating The Clash. And they were punk because they were speaking of matters that mattered to them, were incredibly awesome with how they handled their money situation with the label and kept record prices at a minimum for the fans, and were able to transcend what punk was able to be.
As for Screaming Females, I like them. That girl has a set of pipes on her. And I love Gaslight but haven't really checked out either of those other bands though I have heard of them.
I offer to you Make Do and Mend and The Menzingers as two punk bands that are awesome.
And for the record, I started this thread because I was lonely and awake. And when no one responded because people tend to sleep at night rather go on the internet and look for things written by me I got sadder and shuffled around my house. Then I remembered I had ambien and didn't need to be awake.

All this thread has done is remind me how bad the current state of punk is.
If you're one of the "Hardcore/Punk" guys and not a "they're two different genres" guys, Sick of It All is still active and awesome.

They just played a show with Snapcase, pioneers of the genre in many ways. The first song off of the new album "death or jail" makes you want to have a circle open up anywhere so you can throw people around.
On the flipside of this, I was in the city tonight to see The Mountain Goats in support of their new and awesome album "All Eternals Deck". I've never been to a show like that. There were a lot of quiet times. I know this happens when it's just a guy and a guitar o piano but I saw Brian Fallon play down in New Brunswick at Court Tavern and that was loud and sweaty as ever.
As the quiet aspects of the show were very, very quiet, the loud parts were incredible. Craig Finn of The Hold Steady Showed up for a few of the real bouncy rocking tunes and it was just awesome. If you ever get a chance to see either of these groups, go. So fucking good.

I know I wasn't the one who made the statement but I dont really have an issue with the genre blending they were into, I just aesthetically hate listening to them. To me it lacks punch and urgency, it's too intellectual, and I dont really care for Joe Strummers voice. A lot of my reaction to The Clash is also what has happened to them since, I think theyre just overly cannonized.
I saw both of those bands at a Screaming Females show, which ironically the guy from The Menzingers was at and did a part of a song with Paint It Black, who were headlining.
Hardcore counts. Sick of it All is great but I feel like when people talk about them being great they dont really care about the new albums. Or atleast I haven't ever heard anyone bring up a SOIA song that isn't one of the classics.
If I was picking hardcore I'd probably say Ceremony. I wish The Nerve Agents were still active so I could say them.

Heh, this is kind of funny. Just a couple of weeks ago, I mentioned on another forum that The Clash is one of those bands that I appreciate but never really feel like listening to, and everyone thought I was crazy. I certainly like them and respect their musicianship and social commentary, but I just don't get a whole lot of fun out of them. I think RMHL kind of nailed it: "To me it lacks punch and urgency, it's too intellectual, and I dont really care for Joe Strummers voice." They also come off a little too humorless to me. Not that I demand every punk band to sound like the Dead Milkmen, but their unrelenting seriousness wears on me after a while. Give me The Stranglers over The Clash any day.
As far as punk bands that are still going, I'll still buy anything Nomeansno puts out.
Not up on the new stuff but Social D.

off! is good. They're doing dates with Dinosaur Jr where Henry Rollins interviews DJR for part of the show. I wonder if he might jump in and do some black flag songs with Keith morris.
