Man that sucked huh? I can only imagine how pissed I would've been if I bought a ticket to it. Just a sarcastic homosexual pop culture laden rehashing of the original show.
And just porting all of Phil Hartman's lines over to Cowboy Curtis, I mean I know Paul Rubens and Hartman had a falling out over writing credits on the show, but jesus the man is dead now, maybe write some new lines. It's totally confusing why a cowboy would be carrying around a conch shell and talking about the sea.
It's just the definition of a simulacrum. It's false nostalgia, you take the original show which was for adults and then do it through the lens of the kids show, and your audience looks to be younger than who would've originally watched either.
It makes even less sense to show it on HBO, who showed the original special. If you're just doing an update or a revival of a stage show it makes a little more sense, but HBO essentially showed a rerun with some of the best parts cut out because you couldnt get those actors back.
