Why I think Valentines day is the worst day of the year, and so should you

You may ask yourself why I am so bitter about this feb. 14th holiday? Well...its simple.

It was on this day, one year ago, that my girlfriend of 3 years dumped me, to move in with the guy she had been cheating on me with. I was more than 500 miles away from her, both of us at our respective schools, when I got the horrible news. It turns out that 2 weeks later she moved in with the other guy, and they are now leaving to live in brazil for who knows how long. I always thought we would get married, even though we had met when we were 16, but I did not care. That day marks the collapse of my entire world, and all my emotions. The year after has been bad enough, but I can't even think of reliving that day. Why celebrate a holiday that symbolizes everything that can never be, wasted time and emotions add up to a whole pile of depression. Screw Valentines day and screw all that celebrate it.

Maybe I am over reacting, but too bad.

I really do not consider it a holiday... just a damn exuse to buy somthing to someone.... dont need an excuse to buy something to someone... just beauce a day says I hvae to buy and show you emotion dosent not say thta I am... I'll show emotion when I am with that person ... if I am mad at the person... well.. i wont show agood emotion towards them... and for sure not buying anything for that person...

St. Val's day is mostly a propaganda holiday. They guilt you into buying stuff for your significant other. I love the commericals from the jewelry companies that suggest that if you don't spend $500 or more on a necklace for your girl (each year) that she won't love you or something.

Avgbear, I think that the fact that it happened on St. Val's day draws a little more attention to what happened. Your story is sad, and I lived through something a little similar, where my girl was cheating on me, and next thing I know she's moving in with some other guy. It wasn't crystalized around St. Valentine's day, but it still hurts.

We all have those that we love, those that we respect, those that we believe in. When our image of one of those people is damaged or reversed, it challenges a lot of what you believe. Having that occur with a significant other is especially devastating, because of the intimacy you have with that person. It takes time to get over the feelings, and it will still hurt for a while, but you should concentrate on the future and what you can do, not what you can't change.

I don't know how my shit's worked out like this, but I'm 26, have always done okay <not spectacular> in the dating department, but somehow have managed to only have ONE FRIGGIN' VALENTINE'S DAY!!!! It's beyond annoying...somehow, no matter what happens, I lose on that day...what's worse is that I can sorta deal with the sillier, more romantic angles of the holiday, but I never get to follow through with the plan...maybe one day, but not this year <unless something really fucking weird happens>.

I hate Hallmark holidays.

The issue is not so much a hatred of a greeting card company as it is the fact of what happened on that day, so ironically set aside "to love."

I had a girlfriend in high school that I went out with for almost two years...I really liked her. Senior year we told each other we'd date other people, but not break off the relationship.

Three months into college my friend told me she was pregnant and getting married. She never told me anything. Hurt real bad.

I think it was because I wasn't "putting out" for her. I wouldn't go all the way with her, and that seems to be the reason for what happened.

Sucks buddy, it does. Since that time, forgettaboutit. Went out with cooler girls, had better times. Hang in there!
