Don't think I know much of his act other than him being on O&A.

I obviously didn't know all that much about his life either. I had no clue he was HIV positive. Did this ever come up on the LCS or O & A? If so I missed it completely.

Sorry to see the guy go, he was funny and seemingly had gotten his shit together.

He discussed it during his interview with Marc Maron on WTF. Apparently, he has been HIV Positive for 20 years. They actually had him DNA tested to figure out why he stopped replicating the virus cells.

Yeah, I was really saddened by his death having heard the Maron episode, he really seemed like an awesome guy who dealt with a lot of hard shit in his life.

Really? Anything come about from that test? Not sure how I missed this HUGE factor in a comedian's life I actually found funny.

He didn't say. I think they were planning to map his DNA to see if there were any obvious reasons he went into remission and thousands of others don't. I think it is just too early for anyone to make any conclusions at this point.

The most interesting thing about DeStefano's WTF interview is that it motivated Marc to talk about the night that his most recent marriage went to pieces. It was the night of a "Moth" show where the theme of the night led Mike to tell his "Frannie's Last Ride" story and Marc to tell an angry story about his wife. "Frannie's Last Ride" is an almost perfect spoken word story, it is sweet, it is short, it is sad, and it ends with a really strong moment of tragedy and triumph. Marc's story, which I admittedly never heard, involves going off on his wife and accidentally destroying an antique chair.

The episodes are still available. Check out WTF with Marc Maron episodes 129 (Following the conclusion of a Jeananne Garafalo interview) and 130 (the whole episode)

But the guy was a motivational speaker who was working with recovering drug addicts who kind of drifted into stand up. The story of his turnaround will probably make a great movie, but I am not so certain that his stand up will transcend to the level of Bill Hicks or Sam Kineson. But I don't know if today is the day to draw comparisons.

Damn. I really liked Mike's stand-up, so I was already saddened by this news but that story just hits you in the chest like baseball bat. Suddenly my life doesn't seem quite as tough as I make it out to be day-to-day.

R.I.P., Mike.

Nah, Tom has your phone number too so dismay is the right response.

cringehumor.net Plans on having a viewing of some of his one man show they have recorded

In association with the DeStefano family, Cringe Humor, producer Ray Ellin and cinematographer Frank Mosca will continue to get Mike’s message out. In weeks to come we’ll be holding a memorial service at the Barrow Street Theatre where we will screen some of the footage that was shot during his one man show. For now the family has asked in lieu of flowers that anyone can make a donation to the American Heart Association in Mike’s name. http://www.heart.org.

I hope they put this out on the web or DVD, I woud love to see this but I don't live in NY anymore.

Not to piggy back on the late Mike DeStefano's death, but if you are not subscribed to The Moth, you may want to consider adding it to your podcast feed today.

This story is what originally made me a Mike DeStefano fan and without The Moth, I wouldn't have known about him at all (prior to Last Comic).

Not every story is good, not every story is well-told, but most of the content is incredible.
