Late Bloomers

Last night I was talking to someone about being a late bloomer. I was a shy, overweight kid. Never dated in high school or college. Didn't have my first kiss until I was 18 and didn't "give it up" 'til my mid-twenties.

I'm hoping I'm in good company! Any other late bloomers out there?

I think we are finding that a lot of people got started late. That this concept of late bloomer is almost an indoctrinated thing in all of us. I find that the older you get, the more you realize people in high school were sooooo full of shit when it came to these things. Add into the mix shows on HBO that dealt with 13 year old hummers, and we all feel like we got started late. As for me, I had my first kiss at 13, French Kiss at 14. Inner orgasmic fun at 18...

I didn't have sex for that long by choice. Had my opportunities, sometimes I wish I took them. I didn't really drink for that long by choice too. I don't regret any of it. It's made me more aware of things most people will never figure out.

I have to admit that 'late
bloomer' makes me think of
me as a person, not when I
first had sex - an arguably
much more important thing,
I think. Until my senior year
in college I think I was never
really comfortable with who
I was, and it showed a lot. I
couldn't figure out how to
make friends , what I
wanted from friends, or
really what I wanted from
myself.

I think that today I know who
and what I am, and I am
happy - I am 25, and I think
that that sort of
self-awareness and
wholeness is something
that only comes with time.
Certainly I have seen many
people even decades older
than me who seme to still
be searching for their
identity; and then there are
some younger. I don't think
it is something that can be
classified as early or late; it
depends on the
circumstances of your life.

Oh, and btw, I was 17.

Yes, I agree. I didn't mean to make this a "when did you lose it thread." When my dad died I had to grow up REAL fast since I was alone. I found an independent streak in me a mile wide that I NEVER knew I had. I also had to force myself out of my shyness. I used to be the sort of person who'd cower if you said, "BOO!" Now, I will put you in your place and then some!

for me, finally giving up my late bloomer status was a mix of 2 things.

I finally found a girl at the time that I really liked. We did the "whoopie" six months into the relationship, and we stayed together for 4 years after that.

the other reason was...I was a sexually frustrated 20 year old with a hot 24 year old...you do the math.
