Interesting topic on R&F right now.

What was the song that made you realize that there was more music out there than what your parents were listening to?

I would say mine would be "Smells Like Teen Spirit". I was almost 12 when it came out, and it's definitely directed my life, musically.

I grew up on my parents' Beatles, Beach Boys and Stones records. But the first time I heard "Eruption" from Van Halen it blew my mind because I had never heard a guitar sound like that.

I can also probably sing along to all of Barry Manilow's hits because my mother always played that crap in the car.

got introduced to these bands freshman year of high school....i was never really into music until i heard this stuff. I obviously knew who metallica was, but never really listened to their stuff before. got into the metal first, than started listening to NY/NJ hardcore, going to shows, moshing, hanging out in that scene. was fun while it lasted.

Mine was Van Halen too... the whole Diver Down album, which I heard at a friend's house.

In the mid 80s in New Jersey a kid up the street gave my brother Big Lizard In My Backyard by The Dead Milkmen. It was the first time I ever heard someone conciously be out of tune. I played that tape a lot.

First record I bought that my dad didn't "get." Up until then, I always listened to his music--Queen, Beatles, Michael Jackson, etc.

I will admit my parents were so cool they bought me this record for Christmas in 1981. it blew me away. That is when my love for AC/DC began and thought "Dan Fogelberg sucks!"

Along with For Those About to Rock they gave me Ghost in the Machine. My other favorite band was discovered. I listened to those albums for months again and again.

I wish I had a cooler answer to this, but as far as I can remember, the first song I really liked, without influence from my parents or sister was "Two Princes" by the Spin Doctors.

The Sex Pistols. I was 9 or 10 when they came to the US. Totally didn't get the music, but my parents hated it, so I loved it. Now that I think about it, I guess I got it afterall.

Being the youngest of five, I can't remember a time when my parents music was anything other than the stuff old people listen to. My brother says I could sing Satisfaction before I could form my own sentences.

As many noted, interesting topic but not so concrete for me. Overall I was into both my own thing and plenty of my father's music since I can remember. He's all about classic rock from his era...stones, beatles, cheap trick, zep, queen, floyd and plenty of more obscure shit. So that always had an impact on me, but I have liked some bands on my own since as far back as I can remember. Due to his job, he literally brought home about 25 cds with the hole punch/hole poke through the back corner and or not for resale brand. I was able to amass a huge collection of good shit back in the day without dropping $15+ per cd and was exposed to so many different artists. Some I wish I never soured my ears with.

Here's a few off the top of my head that hit me as a new direction in music at the time, or at least from the normal likes of my father. My mother just constantly told us both to turn it down.

Yes, everyone is lying.

I know I am. I put up a fucking high school band in there that was completely sappy and the precursor to Live. They played my hometown area and I was exposed to them bc of that and the hundreds of free concerts I went to via my pops since I was about 5 years old. I still remember being a kid on the side of the stage at concerts like the Stone's Steel Wheel's tour or Floyd's Momentary Lapse Tour. I have some other shit when I was REAL young, like this one...LOVED IT when a tot!

Not to mention these guys were another local band my dad knew well that I didn't hate. Not my type music, a little light/poppy for me even today, but still liked it. They were pretty decent song writers for their time, and still write for acts currently out there.

But I have no doubt you guys got into Miles Davis when you were four, because that's what the colored folks had on at the flop house where you and your super cool toddler friends went to tie off.
