My thoughts on the night.
- I see John Mayer is trying to look like Johnny Depp these days.
- Does Eminem have to look pissed off all the time. Seriously Marshall, no one is gonna take your rap card away from you if you crack a smile every now and then.
- Rihanna is so fucking hot!
- Who knew that Gwynth Paltrow could actually sing?
- I was impressed by this Bruno Mars. I had heard the name before, but never heard his music. That old school 50's vibe perfomance was pretty cool.
- Martina McBride and the chick in Lady Antebellum are gorgeous!
- Such a shame to see Christina Aguilera falling apart. She used to be so hot.
-Speaking of falling apart, Miranda Lambert used to be hot, but man she's gotten big. She really should not have worn a dress that tight.
- Esperanza Spalding? WHO?
- Aretha Franklin is so dying this year. Here's an early R.I.P. for the Queen of Soul.
- Was it really necessary to have Bob Dylan on? Christ, his voice always sucked, but now it's 100x worse.
I have only one thought:

I have no idea who Arcade Fire is and couldnt understand a word of either song they sang. I thought they were terrible.
Gaga is out of her mind. She really is going overboard with arriving in an egg and the pointed shoulders that look like she "was born that way"
Lady A deserved their grammys. I thought Record, Song and Album of the year would all be between then and Eminem. I had no idea they would both lose out to some French Canadian group that no one I know has every heard of before!

OK, I'm admittedly a bit narrow-minded when it comes to my music and I admit that I like almost NOTHING that has been popular in the last 10 years. That being said, I'm just getting round to watching the Grammy Awards now...anyone else think Gaga basically just did a really interesting cover of "Express Yourself" by Madonna?

I was watching that performance with my dad and he turns to me and goes, 'first it was Cher, then Madonna, now Gaga'. Then I told him I thought the song sounded EXACTLY like Express Yourself. We promptly turned the channel.

mumford and sons and the acoustic jam with those other guys and dylan was great.
the muse video effects and the 'rioters' was pretty cool.

Most people on all the news shows reported it as such too. In todays music industry selling 100k copies could get you a #1 album it means dick (BTW they sold 156k 1st week yahhhh!!! they are awesome) Not only do they suck most people were shocked they won. I don't think he was saying that Arcade Fire is as big as Eminem, but among rock circles Arcade Fire is as big as they get.
I'm pretty biased when it comes to this, not that I'm a fan of Arcade Fire (they're alright but I don't go out of my way to listen to them) but I absolutely loathe Eminem. It has nothing to do with talent, but just that I feel that he is such a complete d-bag.

I am neutral on the BEP's. I don't mind them when I am working out or if they pop up on the radio. If you are a fan of pop music at all I consider BEP above average in that scene.
If you are going to base the record of the year on really being the best record of the year, none of the nominess deserved it in my subjective opinion. They should just rename it to most popular/ most sold album of the year and give it to eminem/gaga/whatever pop star of the moment.

It just seems like something fun that gets out of hand. I always thought it was funny and silly and good natured how people understand their own music as the correct limits of the musical world, and anything outside of it is wierd, meanwhile those other people think the exact same thing.
One of my favorite things is to hear black people who never listen to rock music interpret the kind of stuff that I like.
Really it's the fault of music journalism, which would have you believe that Arcade Fire rules the world, when in actuality they're a pretty niche band. This is the crunch of that.

Hipsters dont listen to Arcade Fire at all, but they dont know that.
My point is that essentially ALL music is niche if you make the context big enough. If you know about contemporary rock music then you absolutely know who Arcade Fire are, but the grammys encompass all music.
Like that Esperanza girl I had absolutely never heard of until they said her name in the nominations, and when she won I thought "Really, she's the only one I never heard of." But somewhere somebody stuck their arms up in the air and said "Yes, Esperanze beat these no names."
Same thing with Beiber, I'm aware that he's a musician but I had never heard any of his music until the grammys. I had heard of Lady Gaga for a really long time before I knew she was a singer, I thought she was like a Paris Hilton type who just was famous for flashing her kitten heading into clubs.

We live in a different time now.
Arcade Fire may be "the biggest band in the world right now" but... that doesn't mean what it USED to.
If you're over 35, you can recall a time when an artist would sell 3 million copies of an album... and it would be considered a "flop". (Alanis Morrisette's 2nd record... Michael Jackson's Dangerous.....)
For some of us "old folk", selling 150k or whatever really doesn't put a band on immediate-holy-shit-this-changes-everything status.
Bands like Def Leppard have 2 albums back to back that sold over 20 million. And another that sold over 10. Go to any bar in the world... and they'll be a cover band playing "Pour Some Sugar On Me".
Michael Jackson, The Police, Bruce Springsteen, U2,Bon Jovi, etc etc... these guys have have EACH sold tens of millions of records at a time. The STILL sell out MSG on multiple nights. MJ sold out FIFTY nights at one of the biggest arenas in the world.
Arcade Fire are definitely making a ripple right now. If you're a (fairly) young person right now... yeah... you might think that they're brand of non-commercial music is everything. That band is definitely making a buck-against-the-current-shitty-state-of-music statement. Bravo.
But to say that they're anything more than the current flavor of the moment is just plain silly. Not at this point in time.
Lots of bands sell out MSG.
Spice Girls, Bieber, ... and Tom Petty and Queen. It is a very common (yet still amazing) feat.

Were they ever not? I dont know I dont watch them religiously. But if the industry is giving away awards doesn't it make sense that the people making money and having the most visibility win, or atleast contend?
It would be helpful to music to have a very visible award show that was 1: more specified and 2: judged by a more diverse group.

Which is why I think awarding something as subjective as music is dumb. The Country Music Awards actually make sense, as they're just awarding a specific genre of music. But trying to get people to decide what is the best album of the year overall is retarded.

I agree with you Underdog.
The subjective nature of the award makes it -seemingly- a worthless award to win.
I mean, unless you're actually going to acknowledge the band with the highest SALES, then it's gonna be hard to say who is "best". The very thing that millions of GaGa fans respond to is the exact thing that millions of her detractors absolutely loathe.
I've noticed one thing though. The academy is always "stupid, uppity, out of touch, corporate, assholes" unless, of course, YOU'RE favorite band just won a trophy.

Do you still think that everyone knows or going into the Grammy's knew who they were? Seems like almost every article written, joke on late night, tweet story etc all seem to focus on that NO ONE KNEW WHO THE FUCK THEY ARE!

The joke makes no sense. He said no one knows who they are, and them winning is like an ultra-popular, worldwide known vodka winning best vodka. It doesn't make any sense.
If Lady Gaga had won, and he substituted Lady Gaga for Arcade Fire, it would make sense, because Lady Gaga sucks, but everyone knows who she is.
And I never thought everyone knew who they were, I just thought it was nuts that people didn't know who one of the largest current rock bands in the world was.
If someone didn't know who Lil' Wayne (I'm trying to think of a comparison on the rap/pop side, but that music is far more mainstream than rock, so someone like BEP or Eminem wouldn't work) was and claimed they knew stuff about music, wouldn't that surprise you?

I think he said one thing and then made a totally different joke. Its very hard to get that when reading a tweet, 140 characters or less!
Exactly Rock isnt that mainstream anymore especially that kind of rock. I guess thats why everything I have read about them since has started out "Indie rock bad Arcade Fire".

Rock definitely isn't as mainstream or as popular as rap or R&B, at least now.

I get that, I was saying it's crazy people who've never even heard of them. Like li'l Wayne, I've never heard a song, but I know the name. Also, it's shitty but that emo crap is pretty popular and in theory is supposed to be rock.

I agree. It was very surprising to me that a lot of people had no idea who Arcade Fire was, but people are usually just very ignorant to music outside of their little circle.
