View Full Version : Ron on The Jay Thomas Show

Ron was on The Jay Thomas Show (Stars Too XM 139) this afternoon from 4pm-4:30pm EST.

Jay was his rather douchey self, discussing Ron's interview style (NPR-like), Fez, an awkward exchange about Ron Diaz (and his wife's illness), etc.

Afterwards, Jay's listeners thought Ron's appearance was boring.

Jay later said that he didn't think that there was "much to Ron Bennington. He's a sponge for other people's talent." Awesome.

Did anyone else catch this shit?

Ive been listening to Ron and Fez for about 6 years now and to say i LOVE the show would be a understatement, just got my wife listening to, we both get home from work and listen to replays most days.

Just wanted to say hi to the message board people and intro myself, i plan on visiting and jumping in the conversations

Well then it is a lucky thing for Jay Thomas that he doesn't possess any talent for Ron to absorb.

Yup, thanks Space Edge.

Here are some tips for keeping yourself from painting the ceiling with your brains while attempting to listen to Mr. Jay Thomas:

Ron's bit starts at the 49 min. mark and goes for about a half hour before Ron pulls the rip cord, which is the most entertaining moment. Mr. Thomas disses our hero a few minutes into the following break.

I tried to listen to the whole show to get the flavor. DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS YOURSELF. I had to give up after 10 minutes. A better way to listen to this show is to randomly click on the timer bar for about 15 second clips. You are guaranteed to hit a hack radio cliche every time you click.

The two minions on the show obviously "get" Ron and probably rue the decision to choose radio as a career every day they show up for their current job.

If you don't want to waste any of your life listening to this let me try to describe the Jay Thomas radio persona in terms we can all relate to:

Take the comedic talent of Earl Douglas, add the cultural knowledge of Fez Whatley, top it off with the self-regard of Scottie 2 Hottie and have the results do a Howard Stern wannabe show.
That is the enjoyment that Jay Thomas brings.

I agree, not much here other than Jay loving himself and only relating via stories about himself. He's the male version of fucking Tyra from what I heard, only he's directly licking his own ass. I thought Ron really did take over the interview and I love when he hit him back by pretty much asking him if his douchey attitude has hurt his opportunities out there. I'm sure they have, bc this guy just came off as a complete ass with the naming issues and how everything came back to Jay Thomas's life and stories.

As much as I think Ron has lost that sincere and friendly aspect he had with all the fans in the past and his crew, he surely isn't self absorbed in any way and I really liked how he handled Thomas and his ridiculous perspective on things. I feel like Ron took the high road an many topics here, and just put it back on Jay. Perhaps Ronnie will see how attitudes like this deform people on the air and it's basically unbearable. Jay won't kiss anybody's ass in interviews, but he'll constantly do it to himself and put off his douchey attitude as him being real.

Oh my god, listening to Jay Thomas. He is going over the list of people Ron interviews and saying why he wouldn't talk to them. Gist is they are all boring. "Alan Ball, the guy wrote some show and then American Beauty and then some HBO show...nah, I wouldn't talk to him".

This guy is just flat-out stupid. He hasn't shown any sign of being funny either. He is just telling long, not entertaining personal stories. This is the worst thing I have ever heard on the radio.

I'm not even saying one is better then the other. I can obviously tell the difference between both. There is a reason he is on Stars 2 the channel that nobody listens to. I said I just don't see what the big deal is, that was nothing more then the normal Jay Thomas interview. I know Ron is treated like Jesus Christ by some of you people but not everybody is impressed by him and obviously Jay was one of those people. I'm sure Ron will get over it today since every caller will tell him how great he is before they make their point.

Jay makes a fatal error when he does an interview, he makes it about himself. It's as if HE'S being interviewed by the guest.
You can actually hear the desperation and insecurity in what he's saying. HE can't hear it, but I sure can. 100 percent insecure.

Marc Maron is very guilty of doing this as well.
Ron is nothing like these guys. It's a whole other level.

Love Ron but it was kinda interesting hearing someone make him the bitch for once.

Just to recap this thing real quick. So they talk about interviewing. Jay Thomas tells Ron he likes this tabloidy, shark like, "when you smell the blood go for the kill" interview style.
Ron says it's not good to make guests be defensive, you never find out anything interesting.
Jay goes through with his style (FRIEND'S WIFE HAS AIDS, DEATH, TELL US THE JIUCY STUFF), Ron doesn't add that much about the personal stuff and turns it back on Jay by asking him questions and evetually he hangs up.

Now, WE know Ron is the most interesting man in the world ;) , yet after the interview people call up to say it was boring, so Jay blames Ron for it and insults him, when HE's the one who failed to make Ron interesting to his audience. (For the reasons Ron tried to explain to him hahhah. I think the "sponge" thing is especially ironic.)

How is this making Ron his bitch? I came away thinking Jay Thomas is just another generic, self-serving radio guy with attitude, who couldn't make a Kevin Bacon interview work no matter how much he talked about ass sex. God bless him, he's made a lot of money, I'm sure that's all he cares about.

Thanks for uploading this SpaceEdge.

How is this making Ron his bitch?

The way he spoke down to and was dismissive of him especially at the end when he said he didn't know why he would even talk to a piss ant of a hotel worker like young Ron. Ron was being a good sport and giving him the benefit of the doubt and most just likely toeing the company line by even being on his show so it's not really a huge deal. I found it interesting nonetheless to hear Ron a little lower on the totem pole for once.

Actually, I love Opie. Some of the biggest laughs I've ever had on the show were a direct result of his psychotic moments. And while I think the boys' interviewing style tends to be a bit more self-involved than Ron's, my comment was merely meant as a humor-style joke.

Having listened to the quote in its context, I don't think Jay actually meant anything by what he said. He feeds off his own bravado and likes to make audacious claims about his own courage and ego (Wow, you really said that to Letterman, Jay? How brave!). He knew Ron's appearance on his show would generate some attention from this community of fans, and he upped the ante and now has the *full* attention of this community of fans. He'll inevitably get some new listeners, and more power to him. The jokes really on all of us for playing it serious.

That being said, his ego is way beyond his abilities and Tom Leykis called and wants his pre-throat scratch voice back.

People here listened to a free download and make 1-5 posts max on him. Outside of that, he pretty much didn't get a thing out of it beyond losing potential fans. Now if he had it out with Ron and held his own on a valid topic or was actually a good interviewer he may have gained some fans. If he was even a little funny he would have got something out of it as well. In fact, to me his interview, attitude and lack of humor with an audience of fans obviously into talk radio and ALREADY open to listening via satellite, was only effective in ruling out fans. So I'd say the joke is on him. Another awful joke linked to the Jay Thomas show.

I finally listened to this show. Did you guys actually listen to the part where he called Ron a sponge? It was obviously a joke. He was getting his balls busted a little by the caller who said Jay was just interviewing himself. He retaliated with a tongue-in-cheek comment about how Ron isn't all that great of a talent. You could hear him smiling when he said it. Some of you people need to lighten up a little.
