I sometimes have gone to Food Network Humor because they do snarky bits on people like Fieri, etc, but sometimes I think they snark just to snark.

Recently, Matthew McConaheugy (whatever, the guy from Dazed and Confused) was on Fieri's show and had a margarita recipe.

FoodnetworkHumor said it was:

McConaughey closed out the show by making the most disgusting “margarita” in the history of margaritas.

Here's the recipe:

* Ice
* 1/2 cup anejo tequila (recommended: 1800)
* 1/2 cup freshly squeezed lime juice
* 1/4 cup orange liqueur (recommended: Grand Marnier)
* 1/4 cup citrus soda (recommended: Orangina)
* 1/4 cup tonic water
* 2 tablespoons cranberry juice
* Lime wedges, for garnish

Speaking as a bartender, I see ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WRONG with that recipe for a margarita. The tonic is a little "out there" but it may be needed to balance the orangina.

Does anyone else see a problem or is FNH just being a bunch of dolts?

Just sounds like a fizzy margarita to me. Maybe the fizziness makes it gross.

Jack and Coke? Tequila and Ginger? These are all fizzy drinks. And Oragina has a light carbonation. Again, I see nothing wrong.

I'm not saying it would be bad. I'm just saying that some people may not be used to that particular drink being carbonated. I don't see anything wrong with it at all. But it's been a very long time since I've had an Orangina, so I don't really remember what it tastes like.

EDIT: Tequila and ginger sounds pretty gross to me, though.

Tequila and Ginger is amazingly refreshing. The secret is a big squeeze of lime juice after it's been mixed, the lime makes all the difference. Trust me.

As a bartender I dont see anything wrong with the drink. Most really good margaritas have OJ in them, so the orangina isnt that far off. I dont see the tonic or 2 spoonfulls of cranberry really making that big an impact.

Is bartending at a Fridays really considered bartending? I don't consider the year I spent at mcdonalds makes me a chef.

The quinine in tonic water and the cranberry juice are both bitter. It sounds hideous to me. A margarita is supposed to be sweet, sour and salty. But bitter, sweet, sour, and salty seems atrocious. Just throw some demi glace in there and you've got all of "The Five Tastes".

Bartending is bartending. The McDonald's analogy really doesn't apply to being a chef because it's all preprogrammed food. You can fuck around more with recipes as a bartender, unless you're making the "ultimate" drinks, which I'm not even sure Fridays serves anymore.

I always loved our GM trying to get us to sell ultimate cocktails during lunch on a Tuesday. Was he fucking kidding me?

There's no salt factor in this drink. The recipe doesn't call for a salted rim.

That said, I'm going to make it this weekend and will give you an analysis. I agree that the Tonic water may be a little much, although I have no problem with the cranberry component.

The brother makes 2 shitty movies a year, bangs a Brazillian supermodel, has two kids, and just wants to drink, smoke pot, play bongos, and take his shirt off.

If you ask me, not really a bad fucking life. Outside of the fact he doesn't shower.

i'm sure it's not a bad drink, but i wouldn't drink it because of the cranberry. and if it's a maragarita, give me a traditional on the rocks with salt. and keep 'em coming.

I always loved our GM trying to get us to sell ultimate cocktails during lunch on a Tuesday. Was he fucking kidding me?

When I first moved to Florida I worked at a Chili's and the managers would constantly ride your back about selling alcohol to people during the lunch shift. Most of the people coming in during lunch are just trying to get a quick meal and get back to work, not sit there and drink all afternoon. If you tried to use logic with the management they would get all pissed that you're not selling liquor during lunch. Even the customers would say no I don't want to drink some fancy margarita at 11:45am on a weekday. I hated working at a restaurant that was a big corporation. They didn't care how good of a employee you were all they cared about is if you were selling the fancy drinks or some other promotion they had going.

Exactly my point. The only two days people would drink during lunch is Thursday and Friday. So for the GM to set a goal of 10 drinks to push for a Tuesday lunch was just insane. I just stopped caring, it's not my job to sell their product, it's my job to serve the customer what they want and make my tip.

I always hate the upsell. Unless you're very skilled, you won't make a sale. It works probably 10-20 percent of the time.

It's gross because at the end he stirs it with this two fingers, holds them horizontally under his nose, and says seductively into the camera "smells delicious."

Actually bartenders at places like Fridays are usually better and more well rounded bartenders then people that just work at regular bars or clubs. They handle just as much volume, make a higher variety of drinks and shots, and deal with food. Most regular bars all they are doing is pouring beers or rum and cokes, I could teach a monkey to do that. Clubs have alot of variety, but they also usually dont have to bothered with food orders.

To be a corporate bar manager its almost a pre-requisite that you have to be a douchebag. Rob Cordry shouldve gotten an Oscar for his role in Waiting. Its was THAT spot on.
