Thank god. That piece of shit spread more viruses than Pam Anderson.
I've helped a few people who've totally fucked their computers up with that garbage. In the end, in almost all cases, I just got their personal stuff out and reformatted the hard drive and did a clean install...and knew I'd be doing it again in a few months because the dumb motherfucker would put Limewire back on there and get more viruses.

Damn near every computer I've had to fix was fucked up by their kids using Limewire. I fix it, tell them not to let their kids use Limewire, and they bring it back later with the same f-ing problem.

Is the RIAA even going after people for illegal downloading anymore? In college about 5 years ago they use to subpoena the university I attended to force them to provide the IPs of students all the time so they could sue. The student would almost always be faced with like a $2000 per song (which would be in the billions of dollars for some people) fear lawsuit and then settle for around $5 grand altogether.

I think it only makes it in the news when it's a grandmother that's getting sued, now.

Limewire is garbage. P2P direct downloads are how they catch you, stupid. And yes, it was virus central. A lot of the comps I've had to fix had Limewire on them, I know the person got an infection from some shitty Taylor Swift download.
Fuck Limewire, glad it's gone.

Does that mean she'll be writing a song about Limewire soon?

It was more of a hub on the Gnutella network. Direct downloads are more like your rapidshares.

Lol
Alt. to it? Many do a google for Gnutella.
From wikipedia
Right now, there is no public accessible crawler online on the Gnutella network, since the last one hosted by Lime Wire LLC has been taken down.
Gnutella2 also supports crawlers for the gain of statistical data such as the network size or the network composition (clients, versions, usernames and usercountries)[1]. Right now, there is only one crawler existing on the G2 network, called g2paranha. It is written and maintained by dcat and licensed under the GPL.

Dozens of Great Alternatives To LimeWire
More in the comments.
I can't help to lay some blame on Apple. As itunes helps funds those behind the lawsuit. And they might feel this somehow could add traffic to them. They shut down some other new site by the same reasoning.

It's back. A pirated vison that is.
Last month, the Gnutella-based file-sharing client LimeWire was effectively outlawed after a U.S. federal judge granted a request from the RIAA to shut the software down. Now, not even a month later, LimeWire is back as good as new. Not only has a secret dev team reanimated the hugely popular client, but they have also made a few significant changes which make it better and more streamlined than before.
