caught a little bit of the keynote

OSX Lion (coming in the summer)
Facetime for OSX beta available for download http://goo.gl/Phe6
App's and App Store for the Mac coming out in 90 days.
New Macbook Air with SS drives.

And new CDMA Verizon iPhone/iPad.... oh wait.

Don't get why they wouldn't put Facetime in iChat. Maybe they will eventually do that after it leaves beta.

I'll probably be picking up iLife '11 as soon as we can. The new features in iPhoto, iMovie, and Garageband look bad ass. I wonder if anything's been done to iDVD and iWeb, though both of those applications seem pretty dated, somehow.

I was hoping for iWork '11, but that's fine. I might finally just break down and buy Office 2011, because I hear that's really awesome.

I watched the keynote, and the dude demonstrating the new Lion features, particularly Mission Control, seemed to be fumbling with it. He did seem nervous as hell, but I do hope that they avoid introducing too many finger-twisting mutlifinger gestures to make that work. Still, though, being able to swipe between full-screen apps looks bad ass. The "back to the Mac" does seem appropriate, because it does look like they're bringing over some cool stuff from the iOS devices.

The Macbook Air looks really interesting. I think that by getting the price down to $999 for the base model, they helped deal with one of the things that hurt the original MBA, the fact it was expensive as hell, more expensive than the Macbook and even most models of the Macbook Pro. Still, though, I'm not sure what the market for this is. It still seems underpowered for the cost. It's still a nice boost to the MBA line.

I like the concept of the Mac App Store, as long as it doesn't tie the Mac into it like the iOS devices are tied to their App Store. Steve Jobs has said point blank that Apple won't do that for the Mac, so I think it'll end up being more like the Android Marketplace -- an official, sanctioned place to buy apps, but not the only place. You cant lock a computer into a rigid ecosystem like a phone.

All in all, some really cool stuff today.

I saw on a few of the "Apple Blogs" that they aren't doing anything with iWeb and iDVD so they are basically dead but will still come with iLife. I will probably upgrade also when it's available.

When is AirPlay supposed to be released?

I'm trying to setup wireless music for a party at my house and this seems like the perfect solution. I'd be able to control the music throughout the house from my iMac using the Remote app on my iPhone.

It seems like buying an Apple AirPort is the only solution for now? Will this purchase be totally obsolete once AirPlay arrives?

For now, yeah, but AirPlay devices are coming. But an Airport would be a good purchase anyway. With the Airport Extreme, you can plug speakers into the audio out jack, a printer on the USB port, and you can set it to rebroadcast your current router's signal to strengthen the network throughout your house. It's not a bad little device.

I need some help. For maybe a year or so, I've had two folders in my trash that I can't throw out- it says they are in use. I think there are a few pdf files in each folder. Obviously I try emptying the trash with all applications off, so they aren't really in use. Anyone have ideas how to get rid of this problem? thanks

Hold down the Option key as you click on "Empty Trash" from the Finder menu.

If that doesn't work, do this: in Terminal, type the command lsof, then drag the file(s) you can't delete into the Terminal window. That will tell you what processes Mac OS X thinks are using that file. Quit those processes in Activity Monitor, then empty the trash.

But the first step should do it. That's forcing the Trash to empty.

Oh, rumor has it that 10.6.5 is coming out tomorrow, along with iTunes 10.1. Both downloads are in preparation for iOS 4.2, which is supposed to be coming out later this week.

The other rumor I'm hearing is that along with the Mac App Store, coming out later this year, Apple will be releasing iWork '11. The three apps will be available there, for $19.95 a pop (though you'll also still be able to get the DVD). This is cool, because the only one of those apps I use regularly is Pages, and it'll be sweet to just get that one program.

If you do install iLife '11, run Software Update and get it up to date before attempting to use it. There was a fairly nasty bug in iPhoto that caused people to lose some data.

I don't think they physically lost photos, but they did have to rebuild the library, redo albums, etc. Just try to avoid it anyway.

So far I've only used iPhoto and I love it it's worth the upgrade. I didn't do any backing up before I upgraded and I didn't have a problem but like knox said a few people reported some problems. I would backup your photos and movies in iMovie just in case.

I also upgraded to Office 2011 the other day but haven't had a chance to mess with it yet.

BTW I used Senuti to recover the songs on my iPhone. Great easy to use program if you ever need to.

Details of what's in it here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4250

KnoxHarrington

Cool new feature added in 10.6.5: OS X now supports the exFAT partition table. Before 10.6.5, the only formatting type that you could read and write to in both Windows and OS X was plain old FAT32, which could not support files more than 4GB in size. That's gone now. Keep in mind that exFAT is only natively supported in Windows in Vista with SP1, or Windows 7. In XP, you have to download and install a utility from Microsoft. And I don't think that a drive formatted in exFAT will be readable by a Mac running 10.6.4 or older.

Not quite yet. It's going out today.

Honestly, with the competition out there, Apple really should make MobileMe free, or at least cut the price. You can do everything it does with various free services, from Dropbox (which I use far more than my iDisk) and Google Sync. I went ahead and paid for MobileMe, though, because, at least for me, it just works better and easier than the rest of that stuff.

yeah I jumped the gun, a few people on my twitter feed said it was released and when I checked nothing. I have been a mobile me subscriber since the first iPhone came out. Like you said you can do everything with various other free services but I like how mobile me just does things much easier then those services.

Heads up when your mobile me subscription is up for renewal dont let it automatically renew buy a subscription through Amazon for half the price.

Just saw on Macworlds twitter feed that the free find my iPhone aka find my iOS device is only for current generation devices if you have a older device you still need a mobile me subscription.

Clarification on Find My iPhone: It is now free to owners of latest-gen hardware. If you have, say, a 3G or 3GS, you need a MobileMe sub.

Sorry, it appears I was a little late on this...there's a great anti-theft app called Hidden (http://hiddenapp.com/) that they were giving away free for a while, but they've suspended the free offer due to very high demand. But it's still $10 instead of the usual $20.

The way it works is this: you download it and install it to your Mac. Then you register the computer on their site. So if your computer is stolen, you log back into the site, from any computer, and report it stolen. At that point, it'll connect to your computer and start snapping pics of the scumbag using your computer, and start collecting IP and other information that can be used to help locate it.

Of course, if the thief is smart enough to not put the computer online, or wipe the drive clean, it's not going to do much, but for the price, it's definitely worth a shot. It obviously requires a Mac with a built in cam, which would mean a Macbook or iMac.

It's not that much of an update. I do like that you can email pics directly out of iPhoto, and I like some of the new slideshow templates. But I'm not sure I'd tell you to run out immediately and buy it.

Be sure to run Software Update and get it up to date. There was a problem with the original release in iPhoto that could lead to your iPhoto library fucking up. It doesn't damage the pictures themselves or erase them, but it does make them inaccessible in iPhoto.

"Apple and several other app developers are the target of a class action lawsuit filed late last week in the Northern District of California. The lawsuit alleges that some apps are collecting so much analytic information that users can be personally identified, while Apple remains complacent in allowing apps to collect the information despite a privacy policy that ostensibly forbids it.

The lawsuit was filed on behalf of Jonathan Lalo of Los Angeles, and singles out Apple, Pandora, The Weather Channel, Dictionary.com, and Backflip, makers of Paper Toss. These apps, among others, collect and transmit varying types of demographic data back to Apple and the app makers, and some developers also share the demographic information with various mobile ad networks. Most of this data is also attached to a particular iPhone or iPad's UDID - the unique device identification number."

Looking through it now, one thing that really jumps out at me is that there are some good deals on Apple software here. For example, Aperture 3 is $79.99 here. If you buy the full version disk, it's $199.99. Hell, even an upgrade from a previous version is $99.

So for a new user of Aperture, that's less than half price.

And, of course, as we expected, the iLife and iWork suites have been split into parts at $19.95 a piece, which is good if you only one one or two particular parts of those programs.

I'm not sure what you mean by drag motion but you use either the mouse or trackpad and control that pointer to pull back on the slingshot. I used my mouse in the video above. It's worth getting the game now while it's $4.99 since they page says it's on sale now. They are going to end up raising the price and $4.99 is well worth it since they constantly update the iOS version of Angry Birds.

In addition to new Macbook Pros being announced today, Apple released a beta of OS X 10.7, Lion, to developers, and put up a snazzy new site showing off the features of Lion:

http://www.apple.com/macosx/lion/

Looks pretty damn sweet. A couple of things I like: there's a new feature called AirDrop, that allows you to wirelessly sync files across computers. FileVault is getting more features, including being able to encrypt the whole disk.

And this is really sweet: OS X Server is part of it. You will be able to set up any Mac running 10.7 as a server. That's pretty badass.

I remember that Leopard, which was a pretty big jump from Tiger, cost $129. I don't think they can charge that much, though unlike Snow Leopard, this does seem to be introducing some fairly major changes. My guess is that it's going to come in at around $79.

I threw Lion onto my Macbook Pro, and I've been playing around with it a bit. I've noticed, like you, the scrolling motion seems to be reversed, and I'm not sure that's intentional or it's a bug. I quickly got used to it, but it's kinda weird.

I like Mission Control a lot; it's a really cool way to see everything going on at once, better than either Expose or Spaces. Launchpad is a very cool idea, a much better way of getting at those programs you don't have in the Dock than anything we have now (either opening the Applications folder or going to Spotlight.)

I'm torn on the Mail app. It's pretty much exactly like the iPad's Mail app, and does the whole bundling conversations together, but you can turn that off if you want. I'll go further in depth with it -- as long as it preserves all the other functions in the current Snow Leopard Mail app, I think I will like it better.

My system runs better in Lion than it does in Snow Leopard, but my suspicion is that's just because it's a fresh install not loaded down with the startup items and background processes my usual 10.6 install has at this point. I'm curious what the system requirements for Lion will be -- I read somewhere they might cut some of the Intel processors loose (the ones not capable of running in 64 bit mode, which are the first couple of generations), so we'll see. It's both a good thing and a bad thing with Apple that they seem far more willing to cut systems loose and stop supporting them than Microsoft is.

It only supports gmail but it has a very clean and nice UI, looks a lot like Twitter for Mac. I wish they would add support for mobileme mail and I would switch to it.

Do you guys use the dashboard at all ? For me it's the most pointless part of OSX I have a few widgets that I use (weather, calculator, sticky notes) but I can access the same info using other parts of the OS. What am I missing with the dashboard, why is it still around?

I looked to see what's in my dashboard, and the only thing I've added myself is an ESPN sports ticker, but navigating through that thing is so bulky and complicated that it's easier, like you said, to just go to the website instead.

There's also a widget my printer put on there to bullshit me about my ink levels so that I run out and buy ink cartridges well before I actually need to.

I think browser extensions have really taken a lot of the need for widgets out too. For example, I've installed the Weather Channel extension into Safari here. I can look up in my toolbar and see the temp, and if I click on it, it immediately opens a new tab showing the forecast. That's really far less obtrusive than the weather widget.

Currently on Snow Leopard corner of my screen in Expose set up to launch the dashboard and in Lion when you two fing swipe on the magic mouse/or trackpad it brings up the finder. I was just curios if anyone uses it since it seems to be something that they want you to use (Lion 2 finger swipe, dedicated key on my macbook pro)

If you are looking to sell your old iPad or any other device I recommend jailbreaking it and selling on Ebay or Craigslist. I did that with my iPhone 3G and sold it for $400 2 years after it came out and was able to get the iPhone 4.

If you don't feel like dealing with that check this site out they are affiliated with Target and their buyback prices look really good

My only concern, there seems to be confusing information on this - is the rear camera video only, or video and still?

My only concern, there seems to be confusing information on this - is the rear camera video only, or video and still?

From the tech specs of iPad 2:

Back camera: Video recording, HD (720p) up to 30 frames per second with audio; still camera with 5x digital zoom
Front camera: Video recording, VGA up to 30 frames per second with audio; VGA-quality still camera
Tap to control exposure for video or stills
Photo and video geotagging over Wi-Fi

So looks like both cameras do take stills.

For the iTunes experts: I just looked at my iTunes screen and there was a Library on the left side column about halfway down titled "Marc Hagen's Library". It was there for just a few seconds then it went away. My wireless is secured so I don't think anyone is on my network, but I've never heard of this person and I live out in the country, so I don't think it's a neighbor. Any ideas what could cause this?

I think that's not iTunes; I think that if you upload data into a third party app like that, how it's sorted is up to that app, so check in that app's preferences.

By the way, it was just announced that AT&T will be buying T-Mobile USA. That will bring us down to 3 major cell phone carriers, but I'm kind of suspecting Verizon and Sprint will merge after this. I wonder if T-Mobile subscribers using iPhones will be allowed to come out of the cold after this.

I'm really not all that into Mac products, they annoy me if anything because they are overpriced logo's that become obsolete every 6 months. That being said, the extreme depreciation factor led me to buy a friends iPad1 for under $200..... and I kind of like the stupid thing. After fiddling around with it enough to get it to run flash site's (my night school is all flash), it's a pretty dandy tablet. I can load my e-books on to it, wifi, do school, mail, watch streaming netflix, and i've DL'd some games to kill time. I wouldn't buy it off the shelf, but if you can get a secondhand one for cheap, it's a neat toy/cheap netbook. On the other hand, I was given a G4 powermac desktop with $5000 worth of recording and video editing software on it...and i want to throw it out the window, or gut it and turn the box into a magazine rack.

I wish that iCloud was going to be a real subscription service, allowing me to stream anything in the iTunes Store, but I think the service they unveiled is far superior to the services Google and Amazon have shown, if for no other reason than the fact you don't have to upload all your shit for days before you can actually use them.

And you basically get to make your MP3 collectoin completely legit for 25 bux a year. That's pretty sweet too. Maybe the recording industry is starting to get it, or maybe Apple finally found a way to explain this to them: "You can either not allow this and continue to get nothing for those pirate MP3's on people's systems, or you can do this and at least get a little bit out of them."

OK, what it will do is scan your collection and allow you to re-download high quality AAC versions of the songs, basically the same as had you purchased them at the Apple Store. And, apparently, they don't care how you got it. So basically you get a shiny new 256K version of a 128K MP3 you downloaded off Napster six years ago.

By the way, the part of iCloud that allows you to download songs and apps direct to the iPhone is active. I turned it on (it's in the iTunes Store menu) and downloaded a free app. It appeared on my iPod Touch almost instantly, without plugging it in or syncing. Pretty badass.

Go to the "Store" menu in settings. You should see three new boxes there, for Apps, Books, and Music.

Then after doing that, just download new content -- an app, a book, a song. It should just appear on your iPhone without you doing anything else.

Yeah, that seems to me to be one of the biggest missing features here. You always have been able to download episodes of podcasts to an iOS device (just tap "Get more episodes" on the bottom of the podcast's page), but it should be over-the-air syncing.

Until then, I'm still going to have to plug in my iPod Touch to sync it, which I really shouldn't have to. Still, though, the full iCloud service is still in beta, so we'll see what else gets added.

I think there might actually be a 3rd party app that will download your podcasts for you. My phone is syncing now so I'll have to look for the app that does that when it's done.

Hopefully they will add this feature in eventually.

I installed the iOS 5 beta about an hour ago and so far pretty cool. The notifcation system is a exact copy of the jailbreak tweak MobileNotifier (not surprised since Apple hired the guy last week) Twitter is heavily integrated into the OS. You can tweet from the camera roll or safari. The iPod app is no longer there now we have a separate app for Movies and Music (not sure if I like that)

So I got to use a Mac running Lion for a while today. My verdict...oh yeah, this is fucking sweet.

I really played around with Mission Control a lot. This is a real improvement over the current Spaces/Expose combo, I think. The way it works is that when you go into Mission Control, you get your apps spread out over the screen, like in Expose. But the spaces are now at the top, in a horizontal line, that you just scroll thru to get from screen to screen. You can easily add a new space on the fly if you need one. If you have an app in full screen mode, you can easily just slide over to that and use that. I have a feeling I'm going to be doing a lot with full-screen apps on my Macbook Pro; I do'nt think they're quite as useful on a larger screen, though.

Also, the feature that reopens everything when you log out or restart is going to be really useful for me at work; it'll be nice at home, but probably not quite as useful.

My fears and doubts about the new mail app were really dealt with, and I think it's a major improvement. You can go back to the classic view with your mailboxes and the long subject lines if you want, but I think I'll just use the new iPad-like view.

AirDrop is going to be an awesome way to transfer stuff from one Mac to another. You don't even have to be on an actual network; it creates an ad hoc network between computers. It's dead easy, and nothing can be put on your computer without your permission, so it seems fairly secure.

The Address Book and iCal are also major improvements. iCal adds a feature I like from Google Calendar, which is the ability to quickly add an event by typing it out, so I can put in something like "Donkey Show in Tijuana at 1 AM on Thursday" and it'll create an event right there.

All in all, I'd go ahead and get it rather than wait. It's a major step forward.

When you install Lion, it creates a recovery partition that the Lion install files reside in. So you really shouldn't need a disk unless your hard drive utterly shits the bed (or you replace it, of course.) I'm pretty sure you can create a Lion startup disk with the developer's preview as well.

One really cool thing: you can get into Safari and even get online from the recovery partition, so that you can get to support articles or even just watch some porn if you can't boot up otherwise.

I have resisted the urge to put scrolling back to where it was, and I'm definitely getting used to it. I'm not sure I like it better, but hey, I do kind of see the point.

Mission Control is by far my favorite part of Lion so far. It really transforms the experience of working on a laptop, and it really does feel like everything's in a cohesive whole now rather than scattered all over the place. It took me no time at all to pick up on it and start using it pretty extensively to quickly move between apps. it's a great feature.

Not sure. I know that when "Lion" was announced as the name for 10.7, people were reading that as Apple announcing this was the ultimate version of OS X, the "King" of that line, and thus the end of it. I wouldn't be shocked if, eventually, iOS gets rolled onto Macs as well. So I found out today that AVG and ZoneAlarm does not play nicely with Iphones and Ipod touches at all.

I got hit with the "No Content" bug on both my phone and touch. I tried all other methods to fix it but nothing was working. Then a failed update basically bricked my ipod touch and I had to wipe it (on a different computer).

I still had the no content bug on my phone, until finally I read a few threads that suggesting shutting down AVG and ZoneAlarm, and lo and behold, the sync worked and my phone was back to normal.

Still lost a shitload of content on my touch I need to rebuild now, which sucks.

Once you're in there, click on "Music". If you want more than one song, check "Custom Playlist for Slideshow" and drag the songs into there in the order you want.

Now, here's where the hard work begins. At the top of the screen, you'll see all the pictures in the slide show. You'll probably need to drag them around to make sure they show at the song you want. Additionally, you'll probably need to go into settings and adjust the time that slides are up to fill the time properly. So that, for example, you'll want to time out all your ladyboy pics to show during the song "I Enjoy Being a Girl", then switch to the bear pics while "It's Raining Men" is playing. Something like that.

It'll be some work, but it's really not that tough.

Like Lion? Then you're gonna love Mountain Lion! (http://www.apple.com/macosx/mountain-lion/)

Yes, Apple announced that OS X 10.8 is on its way, and will be out this summer. A developer's beta has been released, and you can get the new Messages application, which will be the replacement for iChat, now as a beta.

It looks like it's going to further bring OS X and iOS together. It looks like a cool upgrade, and I'll probably pick it up when it's out.

Here's my favorite of the early reviews of it:

The latest Mac OS X is now just OS X. The "Mac" is now gone. It's a clear declaration of intentions. The end of Macintosh—the desktop metaphor that reigned supreme for more than two decades—is near.

Not the MacBooks and the iMacs, no, but what defines them. Their software soul. Two more years and it will be nothing but compost under the flowers of iOS.

Yes, yes, I know. "Outrage!" "Bring out the tar and the feathers!" "Burn him!"

Whatever.

The fact is that it's happening. Apple is doing it, using an app-centric user experience model, and Microsoft is doing it too, with their information-centric Metro interface. The latter will take over Windows just like iOS is taking over OS X. Yes, Microsoft is killing the desktop metaphor it copied from Apple too. (http://gizmodo.com/5885803/the-end-of-mac)

I think in a lot of ways, Microsoft is going much further in combining the computer and the tablet than Apple is. I mean, even with Mountain Lion, iOS and OS X will still be very different operating systems. With Windows 8, it's the same on both devices. And I think that that's a big problem, because they're quite different environments. Windows 8, at least in the Metro UI, is very hard to use with a standard keyboard and mouse; you really do need a touch screen or at least a trackpad. You can get out of Metro, of course, but then you basically end up with something that looks exactly like Windows 7, and what's the point of paying to upgrade for that?

Mountain Lion is being released tomorrow, 7/25.

I'll probably get it pretty much as soon as it's out.

The scuffle between Apple and Samsung continues. This morning more than 30 trucks filled with 5-cent coins arrived at Apple’s headquarters in California. Initially, the security company that protects the facility said the trucks were in the wrong place, but minutes later, Tim Cook (Apple CEO) received a call from Samsung CEO explaining that they will pay $1 billion dollars for the fine recently ruled against the South Korean company in this way. OK so I wanted to wait for the iPhone 5 to come out so that I could get a 32G 4S for cheaper.

I'm now looking around ( AT&T, Apple, Best Buy, etc .. ) but all I'm finding is the 16G 4S.

I'm seeing refurbished ones but I'd rather buy new if I can.

My question is what the hell happened to all of the previosuly unsold 32G and 64G 4S models ?

There's no way every single one has been sold.

I don't know the answer to your question, but if the refurbs are official Apple refurbs, check into the warranty. I recently saw a re-certified MacBook Pro and Apple covered it for a year.

try it through apple directly

I did and they don't have them either.

The answer I got from a guy in an AT&T store is that once a new version comes out they select one version of the prior model ( whether it be the 16, 32 or 64 ) to keep alive.

With the 4S they decided on the 16G and w/ the 4 it was the 8G.

Now that doesn't explain what happened to all of the 32 and 64 ones that had to be in the market and hadn't been sold. Surely not every single one that was made was sold.

Guess I'm looking at a refurb.

They're probably holding on to a lot of the unsold 32 and 64 GB iPhone 4's as repair/replacement units.

Can You Be Electrocuted By Your Smartphone?

Could your smartphone really give you a lethal electric shock?

That question was on the minds of many Monday amid news that Apple is investigating the death of a woman in China whose family said she was electrocuted after answering a call on her iPhone while the device was recharging.

The death of Ma Ailun, 23, was first reported Sunday by China's Xinhua News Agency. Citing police reports and social media posts by Ma's family, Xinhua reported that Ma, who lived in China's western Xinjiang region, collapsed to the floor Thursday after using her iPhone 5 while the battery was being charged.

"We are deeply saddened to learn of this tragic incident and offer our condolences to the Ma family. We will fully investigate and cooperate with authorities in this matter," Apple said in a statement sent to CNN and other news agencies.
