I submit Goya Guacamole.

I've tried other store-bought guacamole but this is the real deal. It's in the freezer section (in the case where they sell other Goya/Spanish products). It defrosts in about 12 hours y muy bueno. It's just smashed avocados (including chunks), lemon juice and spices. It's a little pricey for a 12 oz tub (about $4.69 at Walmart) but well worth it. I suggest mixing in a little more lemon juice once you've opened it since it does turn brown.

Why not make your own? It's easy. Alton Brown has a great recipe too.

I used to but my husband isn't impressed by the overpriced tropical produce in our local markets. I've found some good tropical produce in Union City.

I'm also kind of lazy. :-) But I'll try that Alton Brown recipe. Thanks for the heads up! :thumbup:

Guac is very easy to make, the problem is that avocados are generally too expensive, and usually rock hard in the store. So you have to predict your guacamole craving like a week out and time it just right, it's like steering a boat.

Wholly Guacamole is good, and so is the Trader Joe's brand. The TJ's brand comes in it's own little dipping tray, which is nice.

Not true, ripen it till it's where you want it, then refrigerate it. That will stop the ripening process.

Make your own sweetie. It's quite possibly the easiest appetizer to make and configure your own way next to french onion dip.

Alton sez:
In a large bowl place the scooped avocado pulp and lime juice, toss to coat. Drain, and reserve the lime juice, after all of the avocados have been coated. Using a potato masher add salt, cumin, and cayenne and mash. Then, fold in the onions, tomatoes, cilantro, and garlic. Add 1 tablespoon of the reserved lime juice. Let sit at room temperature for 1 hour and then serve.

I don't like cilantro so I leave that out but I add a bit of whatever hot sauce happens to be around. Me personally I never use a blender or anything like it for this. Nothing worse than guacamole paste/spread. I like the texture of the ingredients on a chip.

I use a knife to chop in the veggies and a fork to mash it all in. It's hard to get the lime (a lemon works in a pinch) blend right. The citrus has to be there but just in the right amount or it will overpower the mix. Tomatoes are there for texture and flavor..onions well, onions are just the best thing ever but can take over here as well, salt and pepper to taste, garlic salt or real garlic is best. Let it sit for an hour? No way. Eat it!
Just my humble thoughts on guac.

no but the ones at Food Bazaar are hard right now, so they need a couple days at home to soften up. keep them in a brown paper bag at room temp.

while you are there, go into the back to the fish section, look for basa fillets. they are like 2 for 4 bucks, and REALLY fresh and good. not sure if you both eat fish, but it is a super cheap way to have some quality fish.

bring the husband, no one speaks english there at all, except one checkout girl.

Wholly Guacamole is pretty good, I did add a lime and some onion though. Getting it out of that bag is a pain in the ass.

Pair of scissors. Cut corner of bag. Pipe it like you would frosting or something into the serving bowl.

That's what I did, and I'm not satisfied. The two ways you could really improve the packaging are to put it in a bowl container so you can just dip out of that, or at least have a bag that is flat on both sides, instead of just one side, to that way you can use the counter to scrape all of the guac out.

Trader Joes' guac is like that. Comes in a serving container.
