$630 with wifi only and a stupid external hotspot?
Stupid for now, but yeah, AT&T is dead once they work this shit out. I'll go get the inside scoop from some executives over at VZW to get the real story on this.
Apple and Verizon Wireless announced this morning a partnership that would bring the iPad to Verizon Wireless Stores across the U.S. on October 28. While the collaboration won’t see Verizon compatible technology embedded in the iPad, it will bundle the iPad Wi-Fi with a Verizon MiFi 2200 Mobile Hotspot.
Verizon Wireless will offer three iPad Wi-Fi + MiFi bundles: the iPad Wi-Fi 16GB for $630, the iPad Wi-Fi 32GB for $730 and the iPad Wi-Fi 64GB for $830. Verizon will also introduce a special monthly access plan for iPad customers of up to 1GB of data for $20 a month.

Actually, the Verizon deal is a much, MUCH better deal than the AT&T deal.
The hotspot allows you to connect other devices to Verizon's 3G network. As far as I know, you can't tether to the AT&T 3G Ipad.
This obviously means Verizon IPhone, and I wouldn't be surprised if Jobs springs it next week in time for Christmas.

Next week's Apple event is supposed to focus on the Mac (I'm guessing 10.7 will be unveiled), but, yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if that's the "And one more thing..." announcement at the end.

Right, Jobs is selling multi-touch with the new OS, so I wouldn't be surprised if he ties in multitouch with the Iphone release.
Even if they don't have product ready, I wouldn't be surprised if they offer vouchers, Star Wars-figure style, to give during the holidays.
I am SEVERELY tempted right now. My Mifi is a neat little piece of tech... and if the Merge can't become a hotspot, then I'll have a decision to make.

The Ipad is actually big enough that the physical keyboard doesn't matter.
As for the IPhone, my wife is interested in that.

There are rumors that the Merge's bootloader/whatever will be locked, similar to what happened with Droid 2/Droid X.

You're saying this like it's some unknown quantity, I know damn well there's roms with free wi-fi on them. My phone has it. I basically use my phone as a hotspot for my Touch.

I hope verizon gets iPhone and takes customers, especially since I'll be getting iPhone in February. On AT&T because verizon sucks a dick here.

This whole iPhone to Verizon thing is starting to get to that point in the life cycle of any Apple rumor where it starts to look like it could be true. You get these rumors that get posted to various Apple-centric blogs like Macrumors or AppleInsider or something like that, then vanished. A few others make it to the general tech blog work, like Gizmodo or Engadget, and vanish there. But when something busts into the mainstream press like this, it's generally gonna happen.
And it makes sense: the future growth of the iPhone is a bit hampered if it stays solely on AT&T. And I don't think Apple wants to stay strictly on AT&T: iPhones are available on multiple carriers in pretty much any other country. It's always just been a matter of when it's going to happen. And the time looks like it's drawing close.

I think the reason why Apple is taking off the reins of exclusivity is that they can see Android gaining market share by leaps and bounds. They get on Verizon, they stomp out the threat.

Yeah, the news that the iPhone will be on Verizon, even if it's not right away, will halt a lot of Android sales. Just in time for Christmas too.

They waited far too long. It will hamper Android sales a bit, but if they did this last year, it would have been a completely different story.

VZW has 90 million customers, and IPhone has a user experience that people getting a smartphone are already familiar with. If people who weren't that tech friendly had a choice between IPhone and Android, it would come down to what they are familiar with. And a physical keyboard.
If I had a choice, I'd pick IPhone if it came with a keyboard.

How hard is it to type out verizon?
Better buy apple stock, cause when that shit happens. It won't just be verzon, it will be all soon. Us is the only one doing this one carrier Bullshit. Everyother other country has a shit ton of iphones all over their networks. ATT is not in a power position dor sure, they better pray apple stands with them or its going to be a bad year for ATT. People will RUN!
