Rock Band 3 comes out at the end of the month. This edition now has keyboards, 3 part harmonies, and the thing I am most excited about... PRO MODE GUITAR!
In "Pro Mode" on Rock Band 3, you use what is basically a real guitar (one of the pro mode guitars can also function as a real guitar outside of the game), with 6 strings and 17 frets, and play actual songs.
I saw it demoed on Tuesday at a bar night in the city, and it's fucking AMAZING. They only did one pro mode song, but basically, instead of the colored dots on the screen, it shows actual tablature to play. What sucks is, it will cost $150. I'm still getting it though.
I had never gone to one of those Rock Band/Guitar Hero nights at a bar before, and it was fun as shit to play. It's like karaoke on steroids.

When the Pro Mode guitar was first announced, I was so excited and determined to get it.
Over time though, my enthusiasm waned as I heard more about it. It still is very cool to me that a game can teach you to become a real guitarist, but the price tag on the new guitars is a bit much and the fact that DLC will now cost more to include the pro guitar modes is kinda turning me off.
Maybe in time I will decide to get it, but for now I'll just be content with the new keyboard.

why not just buy a cheap beginner level acoustic guitar for like 150-200 bucks and learn to play that and then you can play any song you want without buying them from the game

I already play guitar and I want it anyway because it's going to be extremely fun and I think it will help me build up my speed.
The Squier pro mode guitar is $150 and you can also use it as a regular electric.

I agree the price is way steep. After seeing it in action at this bar night though, I am determined to have it. It looks incredibly fun.

I have had the Pro Mode guitar for a few weeks now, and it's amazing, and worth the cash. I've always had trouble w/ soloing and picking arpeggios (I played classical for a long time and always fingerpicked), and this game is already improving on that for me.
It's a large investment, but I've probably now opened hundreds of hours of gameplay with it. With the regular 5 button guitar, I could generally pop on Expert and sightread the songs on the first go, even if I'd never heard them before. That's pretty much impossible w/ pro mode. There's a trainer mode for each song and I find you have to run through that first. The songs that are basically regular chord progressions, I play on Expert, but the majority of songs I'm starting the trainer on Hard and only 3 starring it.
It's difficult enough that by 4 starring a song on Hard, I'm ranked #1 on one of the song leaderboards.
